Sailor Moon, Cardcaptor Sakura, Evangelion, Zelda Majorah's Mask (= the time loops), Haruhi, Code Geass, many others, featured already many of those aspects; however Madoka turned it all up to Eleven... ...maybe except for the Slice of Life elements that were crucial in Sailor Moon, CCS and Haruhi. Like Evangelion, PMMM smushed any tiniest SoL seed before it could start growing, for the chars simply died off too quickly or got trapped. Love Live, while being overshadowed by Maddy like many contestants, rather trapped the magic and allowed it to show up only every once in a while. The SoL stuff played a bigger role. So they had to catch the audience without bombastic scenereries, but with music, cooking, soap opera drama (at first glance)... Maddy and those who directly followed into her footsteps like Re:Zero with its new time loop system -and I would have to look up further titles I admit- overshadowed the "smooth and silly afterwork SoL animes" like Love Live. But they turnet that into their advantage and kept growing and growing... And one of the results is the buddy who could stop smoking. (Along with Zombieland Saga lol, but also have a look at Kimi No Na Wa from 2016, that pretty uniquely combines Madoka, Evangelion, Sailor Moon, and the first Love Live. Whereas the second one might have influenced Darling in the Franxx.) Meanwhile Maddy Magic came up with a new door opener for the new decade: Magia Record... so did Love Live with Nijigasaki Academy...

Omg it's perfect... Madoka Magica always was and always will be my favorite anime. It saddens me that I'll never be able to have the experience of hearing it's soundtrack for the first time again, but this... This was as close as I bet I could get to that feeling. Symposium Magarum especially touched me, it was very fitting that the violinist cosplaying as Sayaka had a solo part in it.... ;-; I was sobbing like a baby lol, just absolutely amazing. Thank you.
