Simple plots done very well. Like all things great in life -

I love this version. The music and the look of it. Jeremy Northam is incredibly handsome and very much suited to period drama. And I love Sophie Thompson as Miss Bates she gave such a sweet and heartfelt performance. Oh! And Gwyneth Paltrow wasn’t bad either.😉
I have enjoyed this adaptation so far but why change the dialogue in this scene? "Marry me?" I can't imagine any heroes in Jane Austen books would make a proposal like that. "Tell me then have I no chance of ever succeeding ? (...) My dearest Emma, for the dearest you will always be, whatever the event of this hour's conversation, my dearest, most beloved Emma, tell me at once. Say No if it is to be said (...) I cannot make speeches, Emma. If I loved you less I might be able to talk about it more"

You hear nothing but truth from me. I have blamed you, and lectured you, and you have borne it as no other woman in England would have borne it.”
It's a movie. There will always be cinematic variations from the books they're based on. They are adaptations, after all, not just readings of the book. There are even variations in book form of Pride and Prejudice, some with elements from Emma.
I have such mixed feelings about this because in one hand, I love the speech in the book and I would have loved to hear Jeremy give it. It still breaks my heart a little I didn’t get that. And yet...I am almost equally in love with the speech he gave here. Yes, it’s a little modernized but it’s beautiful in its own way.
