    Hey, next time use a lighter or a candle to heat up the plastic isolation on the coloured wires you need , and then just pull it off with your fingers when it becomes soft enough. Much easier process, but watch out not to burn your fingers because of the high temperature of the isolation and wire.

      I'm sure it's _possible_ but likely/practical? No.
      You certainly won't be able to just transmit audio/video data without some kind of interpretation. I suppose on the other end of that USB cable, you could build some circuitry in a breadboard that could interpret those signals. But for the time and money spent, you might as well just buy a $30, analog USB capture card from Newegg and save yourself the trouble.

    • @GameDr04
      @GameDr04 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      While I can't test this, I can say that in principle it should work that way.
      Be careful, though. There's no regulator in this "circuit". It's possible you could destroy your USB drive. Or worse, the whole thing could be one giant voltage feedback device, thus damaging both your USB drive and the HP Stream.
      Proceed at your own risk. And if you choose to embark down that path, please let us know what happened!

    What if you get USB Device not recognized on the secondary female USB port that you add to the cable how can you fix that?

    • @GameDr04
      @GameDr04 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      It really depends on what the device is. If it's something complex like a keyboard or a mouse, I don't think there's much you can do. If it's more simple like a flash drive, I'd say try swapping the two things you have plugged in.
      But in the end, this cable isn't supposed to act like a USB hub. So be ready for a lot of unexpected behavior.

    if this is staying at home most of the time, why not just stop at radio shack and grab the smallest and closest to a terminal strip with 4 contacts. the European style works good since it isolates every "conductive hazard" (the terminals, screws and anything metal) involed in hacking electronic "sh*t". might as well grab one with 8 contacts so you can make two separate custom rigs for transferring data.

    I'd like to suggest a possible improvement to your design: If you add a 100K resistor to the minus wire (black cable) and add a bypass wire to the shielding (ground cable) before the resistor than any excess current will be diverted to the ground and prevent overloading your circuit. An illustration of this design can be found here: www.pinout.net/connectors/Y_OTG_CABLE.png

      As you can see 100k has a switch. What for?

      Do you know what for?

    • @youtubecom3474
      @youtubecom3474 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Alex Mag Hello Alex,
      I am not an expert but I'd say that the 100k is to change the frequency of the channel which acts as a digital button (Likely for dock power on/off. So the phone will charge even if the dock is off) www.seattlerobotics.org/encoder/mar97/basics.html

    • @youtubecom3474
      @youtubecom3474 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Alex Mag A "200k" resistor with a diode in series acts as a voltage doper which lowers the voltage (from 5v to 3.3v in your case, I think): electronics.stackexchange.com/questions/72709/basic-question-about-diode-voltage-drop-and-resistor-position

    Might you happen to know if you can make a y cable that has data running through both?

    • @GameDr04
      @GameDr04 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Shawn E As long as you're getting power into the system, then all ends of the cable will have access to the data.
      Be careful, though. If you're trying to write to a device through multiple channels, you're likely to corrupt that device.
      With solid-state devices (like flash drives), there's even a chance that multiple, simultaneous reads could cause problems.

    • @TMFcause
      @TMFcause 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    How not to struggle with scissors when stripping wire when you have no wire strippers: Use a lighter to slightly melt the sheathing on each wire at the point you want to remove it. It should take just a second or two. As soon as you take the flame away, grab the tip of the sheathing you want to remove and pull it off. If it doesn't come off easily, heat it again and try again. Don't burn the wire or light the sheathing on fire....just melt it.

    • @GameDr04

      I suppose it depends on how you plan to use that cable.
      There are three wires in the USB cable and three "wires" in the 3.5mm cable - cdn4.explainthatstuff.com/earbud-stereo-jack-plug-wiring.jpg. Fortunately, that means there are only 20 combinations. As long as you don't solder each combination, you should be able to experiment with connection schemes pretty easily.
      Curiously, for what do you plan to use that cable?
