Smart car has a reinforced steel “shell” and has knee, side and curtain airbags which have passed US crash test requirements. Not the same thing at all when comparing to a 25 year old K car that was never designed to pass US crash tests.
They allow people to drive topless rear engine fiberglass VW powered buggies and sand rails, T-Rex motorcycles, super fast motorcycles with 1000cc that are rockets, etc. I'm okay if they limit them to non-interstate use or limit the speeds to under 65MPH or 55MPH.
This isnt a senate issue its an auto industry issue. If these kei trucks were on the road people may prefer a smaller truck then a bigger one. Why spend 5k on a truck if you can spend 50k on a newer one? This will keep happening in some states
why is it ok for me to buy and drive / register a 1000cc sport bike. but heaven forbid i putt around in a 600cc lil car? i can putt around on scooters that cannot get up to 40mph. the safety reason is not a good enough reason anymore guys. Let us drive Kei Trucks.
Just remember, Americans ALLOWED the government to mandate all that safety equipment on passenger vehicles in the first place. Now we get to live with it.
@@Ryarioswrong, you can get American-made vehicles that fail these standards all day long. The federal govt mandates these standards for newly manufactured vehicles and there's a good reason for that. Essentially in 2024, you shouldn't be getting ripped off from the auto manufacturer.
My question is, why can I not just be worried about my own safety? Why does the government constantly think they should be able to tell me what is and isn't okay for myself. If I want to put myself at a risk by driving a smaller car, then either let me, or start making smaller cars again
It’s not even about that really. The logic behind it doesn’t make a lick of sense. ‘Oh it doesn’t hold up to US safety standards!!!’ Okay a lot of vintage vehicles don’t either, but are they canceling those registrations? No. Either cars that don’t hold up to US regulations should all be banned (they won’t do that because that impacts too many people) OR leave me alone. This picking and choosing is some arbitrary BS.
The reason why they are banning it now is because of the following, It's becoming popular, you can look at the stats of the amount of it being imported is increasing every year, although the numbers are still abysmally low, they are trying to ban it now instead of unable to once it's got large enough audience. It's practical, a bed size of 6'x4', it's bigger or the same size of all the trucks that are available to purchase here in the US It's cheap, for around 5k you can own a vehicle that's only got 20k miles on it, or around 10k you can own one that's less than 5k miles on the odometer. The maintenance cost is cheap and it's easy to DIY simple maintenance tasks.
The most ridiculous automotive law I've seen in my state. You can drive a topless fiberglass VW powered buggy, a sand rail, anything home made with zero safety design, as long as you register it, but not a K car/truck designed by Subaru, Honda, Suzuki, Toyota, etc. lol. The only reason this is being done is to continue to force us to keep buying $40,000 base pick up trucks we don't need. Their goal is to appease car dealers which control and own a huge majority of state representatives. Total garbage and we all need to unite to fight this.
I personally think they should be legalized in all US states provided that a powerful movement is launched to abolish the Chicken Tax and loosen restrictions so that Kei Trucks of all ages including light trucks and vans can be sold here.
What does the DOR have to do w/ registering a 25 YO vehicle that they are getting paid to register. So....if they're not safe, that would mean banning anything older than 2010.
That's ridiculous. I hope these Kei truck owners win their case. In California, they make it prohibitively expensive to bring a Kei car here, even though there are California dealers who import them and sell them to people out of state. To have one here, you have to bring them up to safety standards which can add $7500 to $12000 to the cost of the car, then you need to get it inspected to see if it even passes - too risky for me for that kind of money. Japanese cars are well made. Motorcycles are dangerous, too. I would love a small Kei truck or Kei van to get things done and for my small business - but I don't need a full-size truck that costs $50,000+ or one powerful enough to pull a barn! Let us have these Kei cars!
If these are 4wd I would get one for my ranch and to drive around my neighborhood, I live in subrural area in metro Atlanta. All of my neighbors have multiple acres.
They’re banning them because it’s an alternative domestic manufacturers don’t like so they’ve made them “illegal.” By this logic of them not being safe then we need to ban all motorcycles as well.
I’m Japanese, and driving Kcars. It’s so called unsafety death trap by American safety standards and car insurance is very cheap by outstanding safety proven by car insurance company research. Sounds great.
there's a construction site in gwinnett using one to move dirt. Theres no reason why these things shouldn't be legal when smart cars are allowed on the roads today.
Smart Cars meet all federal requirements for a passenger car. For one thing, the passengers sit in a crash cage. Still they were too expensive for what you got.
@@Ryariosyeah, but theres hundreds of different cars that don't meet modern standards and are legal, so why not these trucks? I imported a 90s honda civic. It has no airbag, no abs, no power steering, and every modern car towers over me, and I'm doing just fine. It's a risk I'm willing to take because I love the car
@@skatingsam96 I’m just pointing out why Smart Cars were allowed. I’m not necessarily against these trucks. However, from what I’ve seen, they may not be something you want to drive above about 50 mph. Slam on the brakes and the rear comes up off the ground like a bike when you jump on the front brakes. Go too fast and do it and the truck might just roll over. You can search for the videos on TH-cam. But around town or on a farm? Yeah, it would be great. These things were designed to family farms in the first place. Yeah there are a lot of cars that don’t meet highway standards. Everyone I can think of was manufactured before the rules applied and the law isn’t applied retroactively - and motorcycles which seem to be grudgingly allowed. If you’re going to allow these, why have the regulations at all?
No its about the Big 3's lobbyists stuffing the pockets of American lawmakers in DC/federal to ensure that no other competitors sell their vehicles in the USA. Oh yes, they let Alfa Romeo and Maseratti sell their Italian cars in the US, but they are commonly known to be poor quality jalopies throughout Europe (I know this first hand from living there). Hence why you cannot buy the more reliable European auto brands like Renault, Peugeot, or Citon in America. The big three want you in their unreliable, costly to fix, jalopies for you and your kid entire lives (generational cash cows) without any disturbance from foreign car companies of actual higher quality. You might ask, well why can Nissan and Toyota sell in the US. It's because their companies pay high tariffs to the Fed to sell vehicles here (i.e., pay to play fees). The American car manufacturers want to wholly own Americas road transportation for non-commercial vehicles. They persistently stuff our federal lawmakers pockets to keep it that way. It's also the reason why America will never have any type of national high speed rail train service.
So the law sees motorcycles and moped/scooters on two wheels as safe on the road but these actual vehicles as unsafe? Dumb law! By definition, 3 wheeled motorcycles as well as sports bikes and full size Harley’s should be illegal as they’re unsafe without airbags, safety cages etc to protect from the elements. These K-cars are perfect for running errands around town and even on the highway. Great on gas, maintenance and very affordable. We can’t afford overpriced $65 k pick up trucks anymore or even used high mileage trucks for thousands.
I think they're cool but with all the trashy parents, it's just a matter of time until one of them buys this 6k car (so they can have more beer money), they get in a wreck and everyone inside dies because of its a tiny 25+ year old car that just implodes when hitting the typical SUV/truck/car people drive these days.
I’m not sure how their argument about ‘safety’ matters if it doesn’t meet federal standards. Many US cars aren’t legal in other countries because of minor stuff that does not meet their government standards. Japanese safety standards are not the same as US standards. My other question is why would you buy a car that doesn’t meet US standards and then complain about it? Wait until it’s legal and then buy them.
