      @@PlaywithJunk most people don't take pride in their work anymore. I worked in home entertainment for decades. Repaired TV, VCRs, camcorders, and sound systems. I would get 1 or 2 recalls/month, every other tech I've worked with would get 1 or 2 recalls/week. I've been accused of being too thorough???

      @@jameswest8280 That's how it works. Bad technicians are better for the business. They can charge for more hours, more visits and finally sell a replacement because "it can't be repaired".
      A *good* technician who repairs an expensive device with just a new fuse and two capacitors doesn't make money.
      The value of customer happiness has dropped drastically.

    I'm in my 50s now and first started listening to open reel tape in 1980 when I was 13 years old. (My very first machine was a 1961 Voice of Music 722, also with vacuum tubes.) In 2019, I started collecting open reel tape decks in a substantial way. I'm currently up to around 20 different machines, including both a Revox A77 and B77. I'm now in the process of buying a G36 from a fellow open reel enthusiast. I'm very excited to add this significant model to my collection! Thank you for a wonderful video! It's fantastic to see the original literature!

      It seems we are the same age (1969?). Do you have a NAGRA tape in your collection? Those are probably the most perfect tape drives ever. And still very pricey and rare. There is even a pocket sized model designed for CIA etc. Also made in Switzerland like the Revox. ;-)

    Well restored. I have still owned a G36 for many years. It has worked for many years several hours a day. I have used it infrequently for several years now, and each time I find with great surprise that it starts again as before, apparently. Perhaps the brakes after fast rewinding seem slightly less effective. Is it self-lubricating? But to what extent? Do I have to lubricate what? and do I also have to demagnetize the heads? The fact is that today there are very few technicians capable of getting their hands on these jewels. Only the internal aesthetics, that is the rational arrangement of the components, is enough to understand the ART with which it was conceived and built. Good times. Thank you for the care with which you keep this wonderful machine, which broadcast the music and words of most of the radio stations in Europe.

    • @PlaywithJunk
      @PlaywithJunk  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      In fact I did not restore anything except cleaning the roller. Everything was just like new. I assume the recorder has not been used much.
      You can find the servive manual online but I think there is not much to do in terms of lubrication. The brake bands should possibly be replaced.

    As I recall, unlike the A77, the G36 capstan was driven directly from the mains frequency. Changing to 60Hz was quite a task. The internal power transformer handled the voltage switch, but you had to rewire the motor capacitors on all 3 motors, and then you had to remove the capstan motor shaft and install a 60Hz shaft, which was obviously smaller in diameter than the 50Hz shaft. I believe this then also required that you readjust the pinch roller positioning and tension. The A77 simplified this dramatically by having a built in FG motor drive system, only requiring that the voltage be switched. But I'm not sure about the take-up and supply motors. Those may still have needed capacitor changes. As for the comment about printed circuit boards not being common in a tape recorder from the mid 1960's, I'd have to disagree. Most machines from that era did use pcb's. Just look inside a Tandberg, Grundig, Telefunken, etc from that same era. Thankfully, Revox stayed mostly away from these, as those old boards were poor quality and prone to lots of issue. My guess is that Revox was concerned about mechanical issues with the boards on a machine that was designed for semi-pro portable use, and being conservative, decided to go with what they knew would work.

    A tip on how to properly stop the tape after a wind. Rewind is demonstrated around the 39 minute mark. When the stop button is depressed, it takes a while for the brakes to bring the tape to a stop. It is very likely that the brakes have become ineffective because the stop button is improperly used. The proper method to bring a tape to a stop after rewind is to reduce the motion of the tape by switching to fast-forward, which will use engine braking to reduce transport speed, and then hit the stop button when the tape reels have nearly stopped. The inverse of this advice applies to fast-forwarding the tape pack.

    • @PlaywithJunk
      @PlaywithJunk  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That will certainly work. But I wanted to show the automatic stop function in the video. So I left it run on purpose.
      On the other hand, braking too fast could also damage the tape. It's a large and heavy spool, lot of energy must be stopped.
      But yeah, I think I have done this on other tape drives.

    A true professional Open REEL with all the experience of Willy Studer. At this stage, Japanesse sill not very experienced IMHO, the only company capable of doing something like the G36 could be AMPEX. The othe brand I love is UHER, the poors Nagra. And of course Nagras. The socket has only 3 pins wired internally. All three wires are connected together by the dummy plug. Unfortunately from the schematics I can't say if it's the leftmost or rightmost three pins. But since nothing else is connected, you can try bothe sides.
      Or you open your recorder to see where the wire go.

    What regulates the speeds of the takeup and supply reel motors in this recorder, which will always be changing with respect to each other?

    • @PlaywithJunk
      @PlaywithJunk  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      they apply a fixed voltage that creates a defined torque. Both motors want to spin away from each other but the capstan and roller make the speed. If the tape would break, the supply motor would run clockwise.
      The reel motors just maintain a constant tension on the tape. The speed is given by the capstan motor.

      Here you find the service manual in English. The mechanism of the G36 is simple. You have 3 motors and they are directly driven by AC power. There are also mechanical brakes, driven by solenoids.
