    the machine was made to harvest as much scream as possible without having to scare them traditionally. there was a scream shortage because kids were being desensitized and not as afraid so this was the solution to his company not dying, and he had to keep it secret because he was kidnapping children

    • @JiReyAnimation
      @JiReyAnimation 9 ปีที่แล้ว +77

      +Zef Anderson Not only was he kidnapping them, but practically torturing them, and possibly killing them if they ran out of oxygen from all the screaming. So, yeah, that plan was absolutely illegal.

      Then at the end that they realized that children's laughter yielded far greater results than screams. I'm not sure how anyone thinks the story is complex.

    1.- Kids become less likely to be scared
    2.- They build a machine made to force the kids into screaming in order to keep the company alive
    Is it that hard to understand?

      Yeah, that's weird to me how Doug somehow missed the implication that they were going to massively increase scream production by *kidnapping children and torturing them so they could maximize the scream yield*

      I understand why doug would be confused but in the end its just since most kids are exposed to more stuff its harder to scare them so just harness screams from them

    "The villains aren't evil enough"
    So a plot to kidnap hundreds, perhaps thousands of children to use them for energy by literally suffocating them is too tame?

    Doug Walker has a lot of trouble understanding plots at times, doesn't he? There wasn't anything complicated about the evil plot in Monster's Inc: children aren't scared by monsters anymore, so instead of going to the children, the plan is to kidnap them and suck the screams out of them. What's there to not understand?

    What’s complicated about Randall’s plan exactly? He has a machine that sucks he screams out of children. Its an alternative and more effective way to get screams because kids aren’t scared as easily anymore. The only problem is that it’s extremely painful to children. I understood that the first time I watched it as a kid.

      Same. I think one reason why the twist villain worked was because we already had Randall. Everyone just assumed that there wasn't going to be another one. I remember watching the movie in afterschool back in elementary and I got the evil plan fine. The villains want to kidnap children for more screams because of the shortage. One did it out of jealousy and the other out of desperation. I think the movie did a good job at explaining that to us kids.

    I loved the film myself.. My best guess as to what the machine was it would basically sacrifice the lives of children for a boost in power output, and the only reason the monster on the machine survived was because the one running the machine turned it off before it could kill him outright.

    • @Karoku2100
      @Karoku2100 9 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      +Vercalos al'Corlin I always saw the machine as a vacuum that would try to forcibly suck out the screams of the victim, if that makes any sense. Fungus was turning white because the oxygen was being sucked out of him, so he was suffocating, indicated by his gasping for air when the machine was turned off.

      Jesus christ that's dark. So ideally they'd have ward of kidnapped children strapped to boards being nearly suffocated every few minutes with only brief respite between. They'd probably use some kind of tube feeding system to keep them alive, hook up catheters or, since they're just fuckin monsters, let them die right when they may disregarding any healthcare. You probably get to know the other kids a little, not their names or anything, there'd only ever be screaming not talking, but *how* they screamed and if they cried every time or not, most people would endure for long though. The worst times would probably be when the monsters actually came around, none of their antomy makes sense, you can't get used to the horrors because every one is a new nightmare. You'd likely be covered in the mucus of 15 foul abominations by the weeks end, the overpowering smell burning your nostrils and dulling your senses. I wonder if they can break a human being so completely that you can't even force a scream from their throats and their lungs just collapse.

    You know, Doug, you often says "this plot is complicated" when it's... not. Here, it's basically just "okay there's this guy who built a machine that extracts screams out of children" and yeah, that's about it. I'm not saying it's bad or that it's good, just that... it's simple. And so are the plots of tron, the star wars prequels and the pirates films. Weak villains? Absolutely. But I think they did that on purpose. They arent evil perse, but more trying to do that which they think is needed and is best for the company and the energy shortage.
    They arent meant to be true villains, but more plotdevice. the reason for the interaction between boo and sully (monsters); which is the core of the movie.
    Yeah, sadly its yet again another one of those 'big companies are bad' narratives, which doesnt annoy me whenever I watch it, but thinking deeper about it, it does disappoint me.
    Yeah the movie has a lot of flaws, but you know what? I dont give a damn. It does the one thing that I think they wanted to do, make people feel good, so well, I can easily forgive all those flaws.
    Cant beat wreck-it ralph tho. ..but I love that movie way too much

      @Nintendotron64 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Shangori There is one plothole I notice, though. Doesn't the suction machine seem like more trouble than it's worth? I mean, first you have to retrieve the kids (which can be a hassle in itself), then you have to fasten them in, extract the screams, and then return them to the bedroom; being extra careful along the way to ensure nobody gets contaminated. Extra power or not, that's a TON more risk as opposed to just going in, scaring, and getting out unharmed.
      Anyone with business sense should have been at least a little skeptical about Randall's idea.

    • @ExecutionStyleInc
      @ExecutionStyleInc 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Late to the convo: They probably kept the more devious aspects of the machine vague along with the dark implications of the plan vague because it's a kid film.
      As for the plan: The logic is basically by stealing a kids screams off the books, they don't have to pay scarerers, helpers and can fill more scream containers per child for all profit (remember its just randall, his helper, and the owner who know). Remember we never saw the machine in full play. Obviously they can disconnect the containers to replace em, so I'm assuming they most likely can fill up the the rows of containers several times with the logic of getting a more concentrated scream outta of a child then simply getting it via a standard scare which is supposedly from what I remember being harder to obtain due the kids being less afraid of monsters.

    This one is so good. John Goodman brings it home with Sully, Billy Crystal is hilarious as Mike, and Boo is one of the greatest kids ever. Steve Bushemi as Randal is also great. He's intimidating and kind funny. Also, Boo is adorable. I want to hug her. I wish she were my daughter

    I rewatched Monster's Inc just the other day and I still love it now as much as I did when I was younger. I honestly consider it one of Pixar's stronger releases. I'm a huge fan of Goodman, and love his voice here, but I also really enjoyed Billy Crystal's performance; like all of Disney and Pixar movies I thought the voice casting was spot-on. Sulley is still tied with Buzz Lightyear as my favourite Pixar character.

    I had a niece who was around 2 when this came out, and I think I connected a lot with Boo as a character because if you're used to being around babies, especially really energetic ones, you can TELL the writers have, too. A lot of her mannerisms are just so spot on for kids as young as she's supposed to be, from the gibberish talking, to her singing in the bathroom because she likes how her voice echoes, to how when Sully takes her back to her room she has to show him every. single. one. of. her. toys. It was just perfectly done.

    The creative and original take on Monsters Inc. isn't so much the fact that monsters care people as part of their job, but the fact that in this movie scaring humans is used as a resource, one that's increasingly getting smaller and that big companies are willing to do questionable things to stay on top, all while harvesting it from a group that's both unaware of all this and has no real say in the matter...
    Sound familiar? Here's a hint: OIL COMPANIES!

    "Monsters Inc." is a great animated movie. I really like these two characters, Mike and Sulley who portrayed by Billy Crystal and John Goodman, which was a memorable voices that I like to hear. I disagree with Doug's criticism over Billy Crystal because he did a great job and he always be funny as Mike and how come you didn't find his comedic performance. Crystal is a funny actor and he did host for the Oscars long time. So why bashing over Billy Crystal for you're not taking a joke. Plus, the characters were great especially Randall is a pretty villain. You're seem pretty skeptical about this film and I hate when you said, "Don't know," or "ohh..um." Please light it up. Not sure where he’s coming from here, I’ve always loved this film. The villain plot is simple: There’s a Power shortage and Randall built this machine that will extract the screams from children so they don’t have to worry about the kids not being scared. Waternoose gets begrudgingly involved to save the company. Kidnapping children is, of course, an awful thing to do, so Sully and Mike stop them.

    The thing that perplexes me is the topic about originality. I mean, it's clear that the idea about monsters get out of child's closet it's not original and maybe (I cannot be sure about that, but whatever...) even the fact that this kind of coming and going is a job for them. But for me this doesn't make the movie unoriginal, because it doesn't stop there, it walks his own route with a lot of metaphors about the world of industry and energy, about personal pursuit of success (a thing that is in every man, even the kindest) and the need to put it aside, about greed of industry and how much unscrupulous its people can be (men even capable of betraying their most faithful workers). All elements well-adjusted in a very lovely family picture.
    Honestly, the topic about the absolute originality as a value always had carries very little weight with my opinion about a movie. Even when I discover that an episode of the third season of the original Twilight Zone series (I won't say you which one, it's one of the best and it has a great twist) was based on the same main idea of Toy Story trilogy (even the idea of the third movie) I never thought that those film was less original than before. Because, for me, who had the idea first is not important.
    PS: anyway, I love Crystal
