Grandfather was a bomber who was killed in a Wellington III, BK248, RAFC, 12 OTU. Nighttime training run. Feb 12,1944. To all the brave men who climbed in those things, let us never forget them.

Thanks for posting this video. I have embedded it in my site about Wellington T2905 that crashed in Bristol in 1941. The video gives a fantastic idea of what it was like inside a Wellington.

Interesting film. Considering the date of 1939 it is hardly surprising to see spitfire substituting for german planes. I hope people take time to reflect on filming in those days vs decades later hollywood and computer graphics. The film would have been commissioned, filmed and planned in just a few months or less.

'...although not all came back....' When you see such fine men, the surviving crews in real life, and reflect on those who died, and with 5 long years of war in front of them, the near-certain deaths of these men to come, together with tens of thousands of other Bomber Command crewmen....the thought of their loss is really unbearable.

They are wearing pre-war white flying overalls. They were usually either white or black.

My (late) father was on Wimpys too, he did one raid to Essen from an OTU at Morton-in -the- Marsh then he & his crew were posted to 36sqn in North Africa.
He finished on MK XIV's hunting U-Boats by the end of the war.

Just found this footage and was most surprised to find HMS Stronghold in it. Yes she was in the Far East when war broke out. She had been on a goodwill tour and on her way home was redirected to the Far East. My father was on the Stronghold when she was sunk but survived that and the subsequent 3.5 years as a POW. Nice to see HMS Stronghold on the seas.......and as all propaganda films go what else could you expect?

@Berlin Nah, that's just an early documentation of fratricide. Seriously though, during much of the war, filmmakers didn't have much combat film of the enemies' planes, so they had to substitute with practice footage of their own planes.

My grandfather flew lancasters during the war.... If his tail gunner was having a nap he would had shot him and threw him out the door.

Call from Norway ! Nice film ! I am myself making a film about a Wellington that was shut down here on the west coast of Norway. The pilot managed to land the plane on a small lake. 3 out of 5 crew members survived the crash. Can I use some scenes from your film in My ? if ok you will be credited in my film !

Hello Norway, this is probably a bit late but I doubt the footage shown here belongs to the poster of this film. As a propaganda film it probably belongs to the National Archives or possibly the Imperial War Museum though I doubt it. Worth checking with the national Archives first, here is their website:

Sorry I am not the poster of the video. But I’m curious about the Wellington your referring too. What Squadron did the Wellington belong too?. My relative served in 9 squadron during the battle of Norway. They combined with 115 squadron to make a new bomber wing in Scotland and I’m aware of 3 Wellingtons that were lost by this group.

I have watched the video on your Channel, I do not understand Norwegian, but I did hear you say Yorkshire and Wellington mk3. So it won’t connect to what I said. Apologies. Your video looks very well made :)

Sergeant Lewis Alan White DFM (Distinguished Flying Medal) (20) 626213 (Wireless Operator/ Air Gunner) Royal Air Force, 75 Sqdn. "EVERLASTING REMEMBRANCE OF OUR DEAR SON. MAM, DAD AND FAMILY" Wellington IC T2463 AA-E
The aircraft took off at 21.15 hrs on 20th September1940 from Feltwell, Norfolk to bomb the invasion barges moored in channel ports. The aircraft was hit by AA fire from Alpha battery sited west of Oostende. As a result of which the aircraft caught fire and crashed in flames at 23.00 hrs that evening. The pilot and Captain that night, P/O. Michael Braun alone baled out and landed within the small town of Leffinge, just West of Oostende, Belgium. He was severely wounded, apparently, according to locals who recall the incident, by small arms fire from the occupying forces. He died from his injuries in Oostende Hospital that same night. The other 5 crew, consisting of distressingly few physical remains, were buried in one coffin in Leffinge churchyard.
