Find someone who looks at you the way Patrick looks at Alaina. There's so humble and sweet people.

I love how she speaks her mind about her music without filtering her opinion. I love gospel music so no wonder this band is my favorite. It's also so cool to have a similar range so I can sing along to everything haha!

Alaina has such a sweet humble personality. You see it in her performance and in her singing, but just seeing an interview is great, too. Thank you for this.

I laughed so hard when she brought up dc Talk, because I was NOT expecting there to be a whole lot of overlap between the Christian music world I used to be well versed in (I'm a few years older than her, but I didn't get on board until Free at Last, and Jesus Freak and Supernatural were pretty much the soundtrack to my college years) and the indie pop/rock world that tends to be more my speed nowadays. I love that she feels no shame in bringing up her musical origins, but can also make a fair critique of the Christian music industry's tendency to rip off mainstream music. I'd say some of it's gotten better in the years since, but you'd never know it from listening to Christian radio... they're all mostly ripping off each other's biggest worship hits nowadays. The Christian artists trying to create something unique that is inspired by their faith, and sing about subjects outside of the strict parameters that the major Christian record labels expect from them, tend to do so more independently.
I think being able to recognize imperfections and/or a lack of originality in the music you used to love, while still seeing some merit in it despite the blind spots, is a good skill for a musician to have. I figure that makes you more likely to understand the difference between paying homage to your influences and flat out ripping them off. Well said, Alaina.

Patrick Carney pushed them to make little accidents like sing slightly out of key when he produced Young and Old, glad to see them continuing that mindset in music they seek out

I think I have a new favorite band ever. Where have they been? "Mean Streets" made me cry today...there is a very spiritual intangible with Tennis that doesn't seem so INtangible. Authentic, romantic, sexy, uplifting, touching, gorgeous, and that perfect perfect perfect amount of melancholy to flow with my unrealized longings. I've never heard such beautiful changes in songs. I NEEDED a band like Tennis to enter my life and I know they will be the soundtrack to alter my trajectory for the better. I also really want their songs in my films. cpunchproductions.com

You hit perfection, but it never feels ardenty sought...It sounds 1+1 = million easy. I think that's why you songs are so soothing to your fans. Interesting point, Rock ripped off Gospel and contemporary Christain ripped off grunge and rap...lol...Tennis sores above the fray. Hard to picture Patrick starstruck about another musician. Whomever they are, on his worst day, Patrick pisses on them.

  • @TenTenJ

You always find Alaina bashing something during an interview. She never once stops to think that Christianity or religion developed the musical talent that she now owns. It’s too bad she doesn’t stay more neutral because all the ambience and mystery goes out the window with that chip on her shoulder.
