祇園花街始業式は、京都の花街である祇園甲部で毎年1月7日に開催される仕事始めの式典です。祇園甲部歌舞練場や八坂女紅場学園、東山女子学園、お茶屋組合などで行われ、芸妓や舞妓、学園の先生、お茶屋の女将などが参加します。芸妓や舞妓は正装の黒紋付きにかんざしと本物の稲穂を挿して出席します。
今年は日曜と重なったためか祇園花見小路はテーマパークか歩行者天国のような混雑ぶりでした。
The Gion Hanamachi Opening Ceremony is a ceremony to mark the start of work, held on January 7th every year in Gion Kobu, Kyoto's red-light district. It is held at the Gion Kobu Kaburenjo, Yasaka Onnakoba Gakuen, Higashiyama Joshi Gakuen, and the teahouse association, with participation including geishas, ​​maikos, school teachers, and teahouse proprietresses. Geishas and maikos attend the festival wearing hairpins and real rice ears in their formal attire with black crests.
Perhaps because it fell on a Sunday this year, Gion Hanamikoji was so crowded that it looked like a theme park or a pedestrian paradise.
