Actually, it's "Field-on enemy" in the japanese version. In the western version it's called: "Foedus obrepit errabundus" (which is latin for "the vile, wandering one sneaks up."). The game even says so when you first met one.

@@Aevum13th @Connor Smith I would recommend looking up a TH-camr named Etanks (profile picture is a black E in a blue square) who is running his own Etrian D&D campaign. I think he executes it very well. Because it's difficult to constantly track FOEs, it's easier to do it by having them respond to certain triggers rather than be constantly active. I personally do mapping by mapping the walls and floors myself, and leaving my players to note down the icons (which I recreated on Roll20 and set them as tokens)
Actually my best friend is currently streaming EO1 for a group of friends where everyone of them takes controll over 1 Party Member. They kinda play it like a DnD were every action is decided by their respectiv player. If u pissed of the Healer ofr example he might just not heal u. Its pretty cool. Specially because its their first contact with EO and they have no idea what they are getting into, specially in the later stratums. Fucking Sandstreams!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Having recently finished the Vanilla EO2 to compare it to the remake. In hindsight this video is fucking genius. Especially the corner one, There are so many times I got ambushed by an FOE because you don't have many of the luxuries in the newer games like moving the camera around to better see the corner. Limited rendering and how some FOEs take some time for their orange ball to appear, means you can step right ahead into one or close to it. No idea how worse they are in the first EO1, though.
@@nykita427 You're not going to fight the Mantids the first time you see them, but they should be killable by the time you get to the end of the floor, heck you might be able to take on multiple at once if you are lucky
Well i cant compare them to EO2 but in EO1 there were most of the Time Jumpscares u could avoid if u payed attention to ur surrounding. But there were a few really evil ambush spawns that appeared behind u asking u if u got a Warp Wire - because if not there was literally no way to survive that shit. U could normally take them on a while after u met them for the first time. In the second Stratum u could actually take on all FOEs immediatly if u built ur Party smart even though after every fight u probably had to go back immediatly to rest. Except the Moas - those take a while normaly until u can best them.

Just so everyone knows, this video is on Etrian Odyssey, mostly about one of the most well known parts of the series, FOEs, which are annoying motherfuckers who run around the map and attack you during battles (including boss fights and other FOEs). Also they can easily wipe your entire party single-handily if you're not prepared.
It's an item. "Warp Wire" aka "Ariadne Thread" It lets you escape the dungeon floor and warp back to town. It cannot be used during battle. So you can use it when you're in danger and the level exit is pretty far away. There are also times when you'll be completely trapped by FOE(s). So using the wires (or possibly another item) can help you to avoid being forced into FOE battles like that. Unfortunately for these adventurers, they forgot their warp wires!

They are weak, I could fight red ones on the second stratum and win most of the time.

I once played EO1 for 2 hours straight without saving and gained like 3 levels on all my party members and then an F.O.E. killed me.
Similar thing happened to me. Made me unmotivated and stopped playing the game for a short while.
Was doing so well in the EO4 demo before my party was upercutted by a giant kangaroo.
