in addition to being quiet and reflective, i also found it creepy as hell. the image of the face in the water when she takes the kayak out... the mice.... and you're right -- the way everything resolves ties together in a surprisingly cathartic (yet still reserved) way. To me it's like if Study for Obedience had a soul hahaha
Thanks for your reviews on the Booker Longlist. I enjoyed Stoneyard devotional I thought it was a fine book but not a great book. I loved James, am struggling with Orbital although such a short book. Currently reading Held which is aseries of linked short stories. Very poetic lamguage but I prefer Stoneyard devotional.
It's an interesting longlist that's for sure. I loved James! Sadly, I think "it was a fine book but not a great book" describes much of the longlist this year.
I listened to the audiobook, and the main character comes across as conceited more than contrite and I didn't see her really being that 'good' unlike what seems to be purported as a crux of the story. To me it felt morbid and not in a good way 😅
@@NerdyNurseReads it seems from my conversations with others I might be the outlier in my more negative experience with Stone Yard Devotional 😅 so could very well be a 'me issue' rather than the audiobook. Though she acknowledges feeling guilty about being part of the bullying for example, the description / 'reflections' about their actions felt a bit off, lacking sincerity.

This one made me think of Study for Obedience and so did The Safekeep. I love a little sinister thread to story. The mice in this one freaked me out!
Great review. I just finished it myself.
What did you think of it?
your review made me really want to read this book! thank you 🌷
I hope you enjoy it!

I listened to it as well I didn’t feel she came off as conceited. What about it gave you that feeling?
