    I show you how to make hypertufa planters, both large and small.
    And this video is about how to make a "fake" hypertufa from a discarded Styrofoam box. Save it from a landfill and make a planter out of it. It is easy and ready to plant in one day.

    I really loved your video so when the arthritis doctor downstairs had all the coolers his meds came in going to the dumpster, I nabbed them. I made several today. I found the painting easier with a small roller, it gets into the crevices. Also, I drew a design from a stencil and burnt it into the Styrofoam with a wood burning tool. They turned out well and I had fun making them. Thanks for sharing!

    Great video! This certainly beats the ceramic-glazed pots that when filled with soil can be very difficult to move. This is a great class project for Mother's Day gifts or end-of-year gifts for students...just plant a few seeds or seedlings and voila! Great idea. One question: Once filled with soil, are these pretty wind-resistant; or would you recommend putting a weight before adding soil? Many thanks!

    • @KimsGardensandHome
      @KimsGardensandHome  7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Thanks and I do believe that these would make great gifts. Once they are planted, they do have some weight to them with the soil and plants. I have not had any problem with them blowing at all.

If you don't mind may I ask where you get yours please. Thank you so much, God Bless you and yours. Love your videos.

    • @KimsGardensandHome
      @KimsGardensandHome  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Maybe just using an old "out-dated" term by using latex. Basically a water-based paint. As opposed to an oil-based, although I have used them both on hypertufa. Some companies still use the term latex like in this Lowe's Paint ad. www.lowes.com/pd/Valspar-Stormcoat-Satin-White-Latex-Exterior-Paint-Actual-Net-Contents-128-fl-oz/3342778
      Sorry for the confusion.

    • @KimsGardensandHome
      @KimsGardensandHome  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have been able to lift and move my containers. Most are smaller, but some larger ones too. Just have to be careful to lift from the bottom since they are more fragile than real hypertufa. I use the paint to give it more of the illusion of "stone" or hypertufa, but they could be left white.

    • @KimsGardensandHome
      @KimsGardensandHome  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am not sure. Maybe you have a particular sensitivity to the cement or perhaps to the peat. Do you use a regular face mask? Perhaps you need a more heavy duty "respirator" or industrial mask.

    • @KimsGardensandHome

    Can l use acrylic paint ?

    • @KimsGardensandHome
      @KimsGardensandHome  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can use acrylic (chemical-based paint), but sometimes it can damage the styrofoam. For instance, I don't use a spray paint in a can. Something in the paint "melts" the styrofoam. A latex (water-based paint) is best and easiest. Experiment on a lid or something and see how yours behaves.

      SilvyaPatricia, I'm growing food in some. The issue with styrofoam is small containers that are overheated, like heating coffee in a styrofoam cup in the microwave. A larger box like these, filled with dirt don't get near hot enough. The dirt and water (from watering your plants) keep the box cool enough to not off gas, even in 100f hot days in summer.
