Hi Ryan. I had a brake piston that was firmly stuck. Seeing as the caliper is alloy and the piston is steel, they have different expansion rates when subjected to heat. 20 minutes in a pan of boiling water and the piston literally fell out! Worth a shot.
Hi Paul, thank you, that sounds like a good idea. I haven't manged to remove it yet but I'm gathering what I need to try a couple of different methods this weekend, and I'll be sure to try this. Ryan
had a look on fleebay - even seats as bad as yours are being offered for £80 plus then the cover itself, so probably a good move to try and salvage it. also good move on the master cylinder, i'd do the same for safety's sake. my 3 y/o superdream had the same issue with the pad pins in the 80s, I could not get them out so had to go to a dealer - clearly a common issue. good progress though, very interesting!
I luckily come cross an immediate seat for my 400 superdream for £80. I've kept the original seat for my next project. Your doing well Ryan these bikes sure test your patience. 👍
There are two types of seats that fit the tailgate plastics ryan. Make sure the seat you buy fits your tailgate as the steel work is shaped slightly different to fit the tailgates on the N and Deluxe. That's why I had to buy a new seat.
Hi, thank you for this advice. I wasn't aware that the seats on N and Deluxe where any different. I have one on its way but now I'm not 100% sure it's right. Lets see when it arrives. I have a plan for the old seat eitherway. Ryan
Hi Colin, The base seems fairly strong, although clearly weakened in some areas. I may need to use something like JD Weld, but I'll see how I get along with fibreglass to begin with. Ryan
The piston in your master brake is held in by a C clip. You use a C clip plier to get it out, then everything slides out. Use fresh brake fluid and a light scrub pad to clean it all up. If the seal on the piston is gone there are lots of cheap seal kits available online. Years ago I bought a C clip plier that had a variety of pin sizes that fastened to the end of the plier. Better than buying several pliers with different size pins. Good video by the way.
Happy New Year to you. I did try the old brake fluid but it appeared to do nothing which surprised me, I think there must be petrol resistant lacquer on the tank which made it a little harder to remove.
Try compressed air to get piston out of caliper,or a foot pump with a bodged up adapter works ,as for the seat base maybe some metal mesh the sort of thing you get from halfords with car body filler ?
@@RyansGarageUK that's ok Ryan ,it worked for me ,used a football adapter and an old nitrile glove,be carfull though as piston comes out with some for force👍
As a cheap DIY fix grp could work. Obviously welding would be better but there isn't a lot of sound metal to weld to where you need it most. Those front edges will need to be restored so you can fit the cover. Check out P&K classic bikes. He does good quality covers and spike strips that replace the missing spikes that hold on the cover.
Hi Robert, I'm sure you are most likely correct, although I don't have either a welder nor the skills to use one (yet), so I'm going to try to use fibreglass at this stage, and I guess if it breaks off I'm no worse off then I am now. Ryan
Hi Andrew, the seat is instantly removed without any tools by pulling back the levers that are on both sides and towards the back of the lower edge of the seat. Then it simply lifts up.
I am not being funny but , that seat is scrap . Dangerous even, imagine hitting a deep pot hole quite fast in the dark bouncing out of the seat and then slamming back down on it thus snapping it in half then losing control of the bike then crashing it? It happened to a friend of mine once on his honda cb100n, just spend some money!!! I wonder what the mot tester would say about the drilled caliper? My local blaster will blaster ALL paint of any petrol for £15.00 if you want...spending money on a motorcycle doesn't hurt lol. There are other places to buy honda parts than just ebay...
Hi Matthew, you make three excellent points here. The seat base is well rusted so before I continue I think its sensible I "Try" to break it, if I can't then it might still be repaired. The calliper isn't weakened but I accept that may be an issue so I will continue for now , bit also keep an eye out for a sensible priced replacement. Too late for the paint now, but thanks. Ryan
Hi Ryan, you can have the original seat from my CB400N - if you want it. I does not look quite the same but I think it might fit. Take a look here: th-cam.com/video/P2iakMt-f4o/w-d-xo.html or here: th-cam.com/video/NSYcLHl1Rb4/w-d-xo.html
Hi, thank you so very much for this great offer, whilst the exact style is not identical to the one I removed, I actually prefer the cleaner looking cover. Whilst I would be more than happy to cover any costs and it would certainly give a far better outcome than my poor attempts at a repair, what would you prefer? To see me fit your excellent seat or repair what I have for the sake of learning and the channel? I not sure eitherway but would be happy to talk it through with you? Ryan
@@RyansGarageUK It will just be a pleasure to give it away to you, then I know it will come to good use! You have plenty of work to do anyway, and if you eventually run out of tasks you could still try to repair your seat and perhaps donate it to the next TH-camr in need 😁 Just contact me on Instagram (link from my channel) and send me your address, I can ship it tomorrow 😊

Hi I would use jb weld to base of the seat maybe.

Hi, thank you, I need to invest in a tool like you describe, my C clip pliers are very basic and couldn't reach down into the recessed hole. Ryan
Have a good new year. I see you've cracked the paint removal, but old brake fluid makes an excellent paint stripper!

Hi Derek, I hadn't thought to try a foot pump.. let me see if I can find a way to try that idea. Thank you. Ryan.

Sorry the only way to go is welding the seat fiberglass might work but it will eventually break away because of the rust

OK cool, try proper motorcycle breaker for parts ? It would be a pity for it to fail the mot test for just a dodgy caliper???
