I think we are mostly scared because how usually they react with that kind of information. We all react according our past experiences or... from what we have heard about it. I think an analogous and more generic situation is how different children tell about problems to their parents, they will tell them about it if their past experiences are positive; and we all aware how both cases exists accordingly.

I think the listing of how you break down friends into categories also depends on your age and demeanor. I've always been simplistic in that regard. For the opposite sex: guyfriend (just a friend who happens to be a guy), boyfriend (romantic relationship), work friend/coworker.
I usually will refer to whoever as my friend first and if asked further then I’ll say how I met the guy 😂 but I also had a list in my head of which guys are dateable and which guys are just friends (but of course now I have a boyfriend so I don’t really do that now)
