Having just watched your gauge class- I am excited again to get back to a Baby Cocktails pattern whose gauge was giving me trouble. Thanks for that confidence you instilled. I'm looking forward to giving this technique here a try as well! BTW, that magic triangle will be instrumental for helping me alter patterns...ehm, I'm looking at you short arms.
Thank you for this very helpful video. Should I be counting the yarn overs as a stitch. Also, my gauge swatch Is going to include stockinette section and I also have to gauge for a lace section. The repeat lace section is 52 stitches so I'm not sure how many stitched to cast on so that I can do both do both the stockinette portion and the lace section in one swatch. In other words, do my stockinette swatch, knit a purl row, and then knit the lace part. Hope you can help. Thank you
I have no idea what weight yarn you are working with and what is the gauge. You should always have at least 6 - 8" wide swatch. When you get a chance, watch the video of how the cast on works. Every wrap around the needle is a stitch. Once you watch the video it's quite clear.

I am using this TECHNIQUE to cash on and bind off for my swatch for the Hudson Valley Cardi KAL.
I couldn't get this to work for the life of me. As I knit back across the YO's would just fall off. I must have tried it at least 1 times.
It sounds like you might not be doing the cast on exactly right as the YO will not fall off. Sometimes it takes trying something more than 1 time to get it right. You can change the speed of the video to slower and also turn on subtitles to make sure you're getting every step.
Hello: question: My pattern reads: 20 sts and 26 rows 4"/10cm over Nubby Pattern using larger needles: US8. How many stitches do I cast on? 20?
You have to have enough stitches on the needle that you can MEASURE 20 stitches, and knit the way you knit, so minimum I would cast on 30 - 40 stitches. Very helpful. Thank you Patty. May I ask how many stitches do you usually cast on for a gauge swatch?
That totally depends on your yarn and your stitch pattern. You need to cast on enough stitches to give you a 6 - 8" swatch, so you are knitting the way you usually knit (we knit differently working back and forth on a tiny sample) and enough that we can get a realistic measurement.
Thanks for a clear and helpful video. I wish to block my gauge swatch - is this still a suitable method? Should I just weave in the end piece before blocking?
All gauge swatches are blocked (otherwise, no point in making one 😀). No need to weave in the ends.

Woah. Brilliant! Two questions: 1) because of needing to end with a scoop, will this mean the gauge swatch cast on will always be with an even number of stitches? 2) do you fasten off the yarn threaded through the loops via tapestry needle that you are using as bind off, and if so, how do you recommend doing so?
I am thinking since I will be blocking my gauge swatches, it might be good to have the "bind off" fastened off. Love this tip!
Yep. I always do an even number.
I don't do anything with the yarn, but if it makes you nervous, you can tie a few knots in it so it can't pull through (you can even tie on a stitch marker that could act as a stopper)

My end side of the swatch, before I slide my work to the right side again, is unraveling. Is there something I'm not doing?
Are you mixing this up with the speed swatch? There's nothing about sliding your work to the other side of the needle. You turn your work. Try watching it again.

I don't know if it has a name. It's a cast on for a gauge swatch. That's really the only use for it.
