Sean, great video and so right on the mark. I am 76 years old and have been involved with photography since I was 5 years old and have never lost the passion for the art. The wonderful ability to tell a story in one or a set of images is just incredible.
At the age of 76 I continue to find myself learning new things everyday and even better putting them into practice. I learn from books, I learn from TH-cam, I learn from continuing contact with people as well as dogs and cats. One should never stop learning and expanding.

This sang to me. I work for an agency that works with Panasonic Lumix I was looking after their community site. It was the members that inspired me to pick up a Lumix and go shooting. From there I was carrying my camera and phone with me everywhere , playing with light angles etc. Your Instagram and and TH-cam videos also helped me. Along with other greats from the past. I knew then it wasn't about copying others. Today I have an Sony A7 mark one with 50mm (previously had a Fuji still use it too) I haven't even decided to get another lens as I think there's still more I can do with what I have. Primarily I'm happy with it.

I've been an autodidact since the age of 8 years. Going on 61 years of self teaching. I was originally set on this path by my beloved third grade teacher, Mrs. Lois Mahan. She had copies of several encyclopedias in our class in a small country school. She encouraged us to look up and learn about anything we wanted to learn once we were finished with our classwork. I would rush to get through so I could go to those books that began the path of opening the world of learning to me. Loved today's video.

I’m not sure I can adequately express just how much this resonated with me. I’ve come to photography rather later in life than many having struggled for a long time to find a reason to and way in which to express my creativity. Running a small business of my own for the past three years has offered me the chance to develop personally in a way that nothing else has ever done and I find myself heading to university for the first time in September. I have already learned an enormous amount from books and online resources, but am looking forward to exploring some of your suggestions. I loved Mythos too - twice to date! Thank you for the time and intention you invest in what your share, it is much appreciated.

They say that the right things happen at the right time. Its ironic to me that when I spoke to the universe that I wanted to take my photography to the next level in regards to reflecting more drama, passion and meaning who do I discover? Sean Tucker. I have the technical knowledge (mostly) but my photos feel flat and mute in message. You combining photography technique and workflow with a deeper dive into philosophy, vision and consistency is exactly what I needed at the right time. I spent my Christmas break binging on all your videos, and taking notes. Thank you for your authenticity, honesty and transparency. I found the voice I needed to hear and the inspiration I was desperate for.

Thank you so much for giving us that opportunity!

In photos the most important is the message you want to convey, Spend all your time outside, in the street, with your camera, looking at life and the way it unfolds. An emotionless photograph is dead. The problem that a lot of photographers get is that they try to get too analytical with their photography. They are too concerned with composition, framing, shape, beautiful light, and they forget the most important thing to make an unforgettable image: creating an image that has heart, soul and passion. I was born in paris in 1950 at 12 My godfather offered me a camera then I asked my neighbor Agnes Varda how it worked I never stopped .Your videos are an important asset for photographers, it helps to move forward in the photo thank you very much

Thank you Sean. This is my first comment EVER on a TH-cam video. As an avid reader for decades (like you: following formal education) I review my notes or highlighted text and have turned them into photo assignments. Current project is based on In the Shelter by Padraig O Tuama. This is what caught my interest: "To name a place requires us to be in a place. It requires close looking; it requires the dedication of observation and to commitment to truth. It requires us to resist dreaming of where we should be, and look around where we are." How simply this describes photography. Final note: music can do this as well. Cheers...

I'm still very perplexed about how it seems that so few photographers seem curious about light itself. There is soooo much to know about light! It is the most accessible gateway to the most funamental physics known to man (Quantum field theory, Relativity), but even just basic/common light phenomena such as refraction and diffraction are deeply insightful about the world that created us and what we can know, what we can see. Resources are available for everybody and it's not all hard dense stuff!

Sean you are doing it again, well done my friend, if you open up your mind to the world around you, see people suffer, see what inspires people, travel, read each book of interest as if it were your last, open up your mind to all of the possibilities and try and keep your camera with you for as much as possible,it is quite easy to be inspired the only problem is at the height of this wisdom, you realize that even a lifetime isn’t enough.
Thanks again for the inspiration and by your example you are showing people that life in and of itself is photography, you as a person have to decide if you want to be a part of it or not. You are the shutter speed walking in and out of life at your own pace deciding to speed up or slow down.
The Aperature of life is how much you choose to open and close your eyes to what is happening around you and the ISO, is the way the sun and sky’s brighten and darken and your sensitivity of observation. Astrology teaches us our beginning, middle and end if we open our mind up to the possibilities and that the old still have a lot to learn and can be inspired by our young. I hope to be around Sean when you write your inspirational book of life through photography.

As always - close to my heart.
As a scientist for 2 decades, after going to school for 25 years to reach that point - we are all autodidact.
What we learn from books, lectures, life and everything - is in itself just tools. Because one can not really "learn" to see or discover something news in any art or in any science. By definition, we are looking for the yet undiscovered - for the yet unseen. And there is no textbook that explains that. Because if it was that simple - everything ever created would be derivative.
Being autodidact is to find the tools - in school or otherwise - and then apply them - reapply them. Repeat. In science, we sometimes call it to "develop an eye for the green bear". When the skin starts to tingle - because there is something.....something yet to make sense - but it is there. Where everything one has ever been comes together. Too abstract to really recognise or define yet - but one knows one is looking at a green bear (hidden inside deep datasets - inside the abstracts of a graph. This is autodidact. This is when it is 100% human. Deeply personal. This is when the stone mason or the chef of the scientist or photographer goes from learning the tools - to see something more. Something new.
A fair warning to most people - I am not advocating school or degrees or anything here - but I do think that for most people - in most cases - it is of tremendous value to having a mentor (call it whatever one like) in any process.
When diving deep into any issue - to have a mentor can be both productive (faster way to clarity) and also a safety valve when some information starts looping without any benefit.
(I have met a few who have gone autodidact on their own. In my case, they are called science deniers/flat earthers etc. But I have also seen the same in art (look at TV talent shows when someone who clearly has no talent goes into a rabid frenzy against the judges who clearly does not know what they are doing for not seeing their human rights to fame).
So when one talks about autodidact - it is important to also mention the devils of our human mind.
    1) Cognitive Dissonance. We are really good at rejecting information we do not like. We are really good at making an echo-chamber in our own heads. And find others on some social media platform that will agree.
    2) The Dunning-Kruger effect. I am not talking about the peak-stupidity part of the curve in this case - I am talking about the falling feeling of mastering a subject with experience. The sinking feeling everyone in science and art ever has shared. The more one learns - the more useless one feels. (A lot of art- and science and photography talents has given up with that sinking feeling.
Hence - a mentor can be of value.
For us that are hobbyists - a mentor can be just the local camera club. All people have a difference in how we see RGB. Not enough to be diagnosed with partial colour blindness - but enough to get a weird "tint" in our images - even after we calibrate our monitor. We may have, in studies on our own - discover for ourselves that all photographs should have motion blur in them - because of "Art". Then it is helpful when someone tells us that our colours are tinted - or that the blurry "signature" may be a dead end.
What I think I try to say here is that the autodidact process that also scientists do - should usually not happen in isolation or a vacuum.
This is why scientists (who typically have introvert character traits (it helps with ability to focus for hours and days on abstracts)) write papers (for peer review) and go to conferences - exposing our own baby and our own idea of being intelligent being ripped to shreds by a "community" that is not for being "kind in feedback". Even when the objective numbers we present are fine.
Being in autodidact process must not be confused with it being a solitary project.
I learn so much from youtube - or I should say the photographic community who happily share all the tech here.
But nobody in the history of art could teach the idea of a good image. Because that theory does not really exist.
A final tip at the end - watch the new series "Chernobyl". The story is well known, so there is no real cliff-hanger as a story-telling device. (It is found on HBO). I am struggling to remember a finer example of modern historical story-telling on TV - and that does not mean I have forgotten "Dunkirk" in cinema.
It is effing close to perfection.

There I was scurrilously jotting down authors and books you mention when my own name gets a mention in terms of podcasting, for which I am very grateful. I wasn't expecting to be a part of that. What a great subject too, underlined by the comment from Elliot Stern below where at the age of 76, as a photographer, he still believes he is educating himself from the plethora of platforms and opportunities to engage out there. The pace and feel of your films is spot on and it's little wonder this channel is enjoying steady growth. :-)

@@seantuck Well I still get a real thrill out of sound as you know! I'm going to throw a book in the mix for you actually if I might be so bold... Robin Bell's Silver Footprint. I bought a copy a good few years back. In it, Robin writes notes next to some 'obscure' and some very well known prints that he has made for the likes of Lee Miller, Bob Carlos Clarke, Donovan, Lichfield, Haas and Jon Swannell (whom I mention as that's going to be the latest podcast). It's like a who's who of photographers in there and his commentary about them is interesting. It's not a very technical book, though the imagery in there is simply stunning and very inspiring crossing many genres.

Cartier-Bresson was born into considerable wealth and could snap-shoot his way through life with a 10% hit rate without having to worry about cost at a time when photography was much more expensive than it became later. He never developed or printed his own images because he could afford to have someone else do it for him. His exploits during the war were indeed commendable and as a founder member of Magnum he had great influence. He was though, first and foremost, a painter rather than a photographer which he returned to in his twilight years. His photographs took great patience on his part to capture his 'decisive moment' but I fail to understand why his images have become so much more relevant that other photographers of his era. I genuinely like his work, but no more than other (known) photographers of that time period.

From snowdonia yours has been a TH-cam channel where I can start a video and know that I am in safe hands! Really like how your later videos have been more about the deeper understanding of photography - one's philosophy, psychology and one's own life experiences are the elements that helps develop and strengthen one's uniqueness.
Love how the background music blends in at the end of the video...kudos to the hard work and honesty you put in each video 👍

Couldn’t agree more with everything you just said here. Have you ever thought about starting a podcast? You have such a way with words and I for one could just sit back and listen to you for ages. How cool would be to have guests from time to time and discuss their styles and what inspires them (pretty much like you’ve been doing with your videos already). I think it would be great. Who would love Sean to start a Podcast??? Like this comment so he knows!! :)

Hi Sean - this topic is close to my heart. I am also an autodidact (another term for what we are is - heuristic.)
Some years after crashing out of high school because I was 'learning disabled' I learned how to learn.
Something that dovetails with one of the quotes at the top, something that has come to be a core belief is; the way to remain young is to wake each morning with a question, something you burn to know. If you do that, the world will always be new.
Thank you - your talks have a place in this world.

“Even though they talked, they said nothing of rich value” This could not be more accurate, especially when it comes to some of the bigger channels. But that’s the beauty of the internet, you can be selective as to who and what you expose yourself to. And I am happy that I expose myself to your content. Thank you for taking the time to express your knowledge through your many wins and failures of life. Your words do not fall upon deaf ears in this community.

Buried as I am in my regular day-to-day job, I take a much less systematic approach to educating myself, but neither the importance nor the fascination of autodidactic learning have ever been lost on me since I entered adolescence. In a way, given I had few friends and got bullied at times, it even helped me survive teenage life by offering distraction and positivity. Love the sheer fact that you make the way you and inquiring minds in general teach themselves new things a video topic. Great content, as so dependably on your channel, Sean.

I am a visual learner. I've learned more about Lightroom by WATCHING TH-cam than any other way. I used to play guitar and quit for years because I felt I was going nowhere. When I started watching videos on guitar playing there was a lot of "Oh! That is how it is done!" I started playing again. Also explains why I have really taken to photo.

Great video, Sean! I’m an autodidact too, so this really resonated with me. My method of learning is to find out what my heroes liked, then find out what they liked, and then keep repeating the process. I’ve found this very helpful over the years and hope others find it helpful too!

Thank you, Sean. Thank you for contributing to the ongoing unfolding we are as human beings. Photography - just any other form of art - is not about learning tips and shortcuts for you to master a particular branch or area, but fomenting a vision, a kind of perception that's unique and should be reflected through the eyes of your lenses. Thank you a million for encouraging many emerging photographers - above anything else, human beings - to never take the free ride in their own lives, to keep pursuing knowledge, to sustain a constant learning experience as the moment we stop learning, we start dying. Thank you for standing out among many TH-camrs in that sense. I love your content. :)

It is very good advice. The truth always has a certain ring to it. I am a chef, first and foremost. My advice to juniors mirrors what you are saying. Choose jobs in kitchens that will teach specific skills. Stay for a year at an Italian restaurant, then maybe choose fine dining, then South east asian etc..in each job, fake it til you make it. Over time you will find your on style. You will like certain approaches, and often learn what ones you don't like. One day you will no longer being faking it, you'll be making it. After that the hard work starts. You won't have a mentor now and will be own chef, and the ability to remain progressive will set the tone on how much you keep developing.

@@seantuck It is rewarding to hear it reaffirmed. The discipline does matter, it is the approach. Never be dismayed when you compare your work to others, and don't believe some people are just naturally talented. Just accept some roads are long and start walking, otherwise you'll get bogged down in indecision and doubt before you start. Eventually you will find what is 'you.' Rejoice when the expression doesn't match the intention. It is showing you what to learn next.
