the only other way is either a soft fire brick from a pottery supplies shop you would then have to cut up small squares or lastly buy jewelers casting powder and set it into something like matchboxes or a little bigger making 2 halves then making the depression for the ring like that .
It's called a cuttle bone, from a cuttlefish. I'm not sure about the shops in your country, but in America you can find cuttle bone in pet shops where they keep the bird food. It's basically made up of calcium. It smells like burning hair when you pour in the metal.

what if the ring has a lot of detail to it like something really fancy, will it work as well?
not with this but you can buy some casting plaster and do an open burnout of wax with a blow torch

Yes it is a weird smell as soon as i hve done the casting i run out of my workshop with it Lol.
