  • Lovely Sunday sail, in late January, through Punt Alley and over Sunken Island.

    As always, I enjoy your videos. Getting technically rather posh now with the drone and the superb music choice,. thanks for the serene momenta.

    Hello Captain Lurch, how good it is to be able to see the Duck Punt fleet sailing for the first time, thank you for sharing your videos, now with the new shots from the drone they are even more enjoyable, greetings to everyone from Buenos Aires, Argentina

    Well done! I think this is my favorite video so far. Perfect height for the drone, high enough to see the view but low enough to see the action and detail. Great sailing! Makes me want to get mine out again asap. ❤

      Thanks Rusty, It really helps that there are so many of us going out now.
      There are at least another 5 being built or refurbished, so the fleet should be getting even bigger.

    I love how you don't have to be too precious about bumping into stuff. If it was a very expensive boat most people would get upset but it's just a whoops and a chuckle. No real harm done. I live on the Norfolk broads and it would have been full of working wherries jostling for space at the quays etc. Proper sailing.

    The two aspects that make boats unique; you sail them lying down, which gives you a greater sense of speed. 2 They have virtually no draft, you can sail them in literally 4 " of water. This opens up realms of exploration unavailable to other boats.

    I love one person untying the other persons sail as they pass.
    I built my duck punt last summer in Central Illinois.
    I'm dying to get it out on the Illinois River this Spring.

    Another great video. Inspired by your good self I have built a duck punt but have found sailing it tough. Have you considered making a film about handling the boat? The scenery is wonderful but it hard to pick out how you tacking and balancing the boat when there are mostly point of view shots. Might help the newbies like me.

    • @lurch1e
      @lurch1e  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Rhodri, It's really difficult to film and sail at the same time an almost impossible if you are tacking and gybing. I'm looking into getting a new action camera, which may help enable me to upload a tutorial video in the future.
      The punts sail best in flat, sheltered water with very little tide. Although all of our boats have different rigs, the sails are pretty much the same. What sail are you using? The boom and sprit need to be good quality, if they aren't stiff enough you cant get a decent sail shape.

    • @Rhodri80
      @Rhodri80 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      A very old optimist sail. The mast, boom and sprit are all new. I am sailing, or crashing into the bank mostly, on the Warwickshire Avon which is narrow and tree lined. Which makes for dirty wind that is different at water level and top of the mast which makes the burgee of little use. I was planning to take the punt back to Wales and take her out on the Towy estuary, but being on the Bristol channel tides are big. So perhaps I will practice more before I consider that.

    Do you ever find you get back or neck ache whilst sailing?

    • @lurch1e
      @lurch1e  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      S
      I don't, but some of the sailors have back rests between the thole pins to make them more comfortable to sail. I sometimes find my forearm aches if I'm on the same tack for a long time.

      @@lurch1e Yes, I noticed the canvas backrests. I'm guessing a softly inflated cushion might work too.
