@@beachfanatic2010 I most definitely agree. Her instrument is pretty big but also quite soft and warm, it doesn't quite have the piercing, explosive quality of a soprano drammatico.
@@freethinker8686 Let’s completely disregard that she is anything near or close to a dramatic soprano whom are extremely rare voice. If anything a Spinto but if Tebaldi and Leonie Rysanek were spinto soprano, Voigt is nowhere near them cause their voices are much bigger and much more metallic.
I just adore when true dramatic soprano tackle spinto rep. Such a solid wall of sound up and down that register; I'd never heard her sing this, and was delighted with the post. Thanks a million!
In my opinion, I believe she got real old school training... so many singers today think that opening their mouths as wide as possible is the key... Her jaw is comfortably relaxed and never overextended for power or range. Just truly brilliant, exciting singing...
This is the Deborah Voigt we all love - a truly wonderful singer. If only she had lost just a few kilos ( which she would have felt the benefit of) rather than so many which no doubt disturbed her vocal support. However her physical change is long complete now and even if her voice divides public and critics she still has admirable artistic qualities.
There is no point in speculating (i) Ms. Voigt would have "felt the benefit of" some lesser weight loss (we are not her physicians) or (ii) what effect some other weight loss would have had on her voice. In any event, all artists experience changes in their voices throughout their operatic careers. This clip is 17 years old. Who can possibly say what Ms. Voigt would sound like now without the weight loss? It's all speculation.
Here's what she said in Nov. 2006: Q. What new pretty-girl roles do you want to tackle with your new body? A. I really want to do ``La Fanciulla del West.'' I want to do a lot more Salomes and Toscas. Also Manon Lescaut. Brunnhilde is coming down the pipeline, not that she's necessarily a pretty girl, but I'll be able to wield that spear a lot more easily.
Unfortunately none of that happened as the voice fell apart and deteriorated .Voight was an Artist I enjoyed and her sound was glorious. Her being a big Lady never bothered me as she commanded the stage and had star quality The surgery for weight loss was a grave mistake. She should have left her body and the voice within it alone. She was never the same Artist afterward.
I haven't heard her since the surgery - but I will later this year. I used to love to say that you knew the show was over when she sang. Has she really lost a lot of weight? I guess I won't be able to say that any more. Well, all the more power to her, especially if she can still sing like this. She sends chills down my spine.
I've heard this solo done several times by students during Met Opera regional auditions. No one sent a chill down my spine like she does here. I'm trying to find more posts of her singing after surgery, to try to compare if there's a major difference in the voice.
She sounds quite good here, and the voice sounds much richer and bigger than now. Has anyone here heard her pre and post surgery? I'd be curios to know if her voice has lost volume afterwards.
I heard her at the Met a couple of years ago just as the news came out about her surgery. I don't know, time will tell. I felt she held back a bit that night. I do think the volume of sound has diminished a great deal, but she is still very, very good. You know; you damn if you do and damned if you don't. . .
I totally agree!!!! And I'm fed up with all this "skinny girl" nonsense. Singing like that she should be able to sing it staged or not staged or wherever the "f" she wants to. This singing is almost perfection and I'm just sick to death of all this weight obsession with opera singers!!!!!!
commandert5 that’s because he was a man and apparently that makes one exempt from overweight criticisms. Meanwhile, if a woman has an extra 10 pounds people harp about it like she’s manufacturing anthrax.
Sola, perduta, abbandonata In landa desolata! Orror! Intorno a me S'oscura il ciel... Ahimè, son sola! E nel profondo deserto io cado, Strazio crudel Ah! Solo abbandonata Io, la deserta donna! Ah! Lonely forsaken and abandoned All my hope then is over. And in the heart of this desert I'm dying. O wretched hapless woman! I sought this region as a peaceful haven. Ah! Through my fatal beauty Torments afresh surround me They would have severed me from him; Mow all my past does haunt me With fearful pangs of anguish, And rises straight before My eyes to rend me. New dangers come to threaten Only the tomb can release me from my burden. No! Let me not die dearest help me!
Unbelievably beautiful. I don’t think anyone can sing this like she can. Dimitrova’ a high notes on this are so harsh it makes me cringe. Voigt’s technique here is flawless.
She's better... There's a 60 minutes episode of her after surgery on here that shows here singing the love duet from Tristan und Isolde with Ben Heppner that is out of this world!
She had a marvelous and powerfull voice ! What a great disaster and she was very well interpreting...Now her voice is just ok for "musicals and operettas !!!
Why do the powers that be believe we would rather see a skinny, under-powered soprano with a wobble the size of a truck than a shimmering woman of size like Ms. Voigt?
She gave of herself extravagantly at her peak. No one could surpass this.
These were the days of Deborah Voigt! Such wild abandon and easy singing! It’s just such a joy to watch her!
Perfect diction, thoroughly involved, right up there with the great interpreters of this role.
This is one of the best renditions of this aria that I have heard.
Wow! She's got it all here. Beauty and drama and such a command of line. Brava!
Yes, yes, yes, yes, and YES! The Deborah Voigt that I simply adore. Shimmering focused flowing waves of true dramatic soprano sound.
Except she was never a dramatic soprano. Maybe a Spinto but on the light side. She is a true lyric soprano to me.

So true!
Agreed!!!!!
A true example of not losing the character even if one sings at a concert or event. Amazing voice... words cannot explain..
Best version I have ever heard. Perfect vocal production and performed very passionately.
La plus belle voix du monde,❤
It's a very difficult aria and she sings it relly wonderful. davvero bravissima!!
Какой прекрасный голос! Какая прекрасная вокальная техника! Браво, Дебора! Браво, оркестр!
This is the best performance of this aria I've ever seen.

BRAVAAAAAAAAAAA she is the best, i love her interpretation wonderfullllll!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is stunning!!!!!
assoluta perfezione
simply amazing. the best
Brava!!!! When singing was singing!!!!!!
My fav aria because I feel like it describes. Fabulous Deborah Voight!

So amazingly rich !!! The oboe solos are equally beautiful.
Stunningly beautiful! What a great singer. Brava!
Perfect tone throughout. Even dipping into her chest voice on "son' sola" (at 1:40) is seamless and not the least bit coarse.
Damn, this is a good voice!
So splendid🎶.....wow she spent her teen years in Orange County...my neck of the woods.
Today's one of the best, and here is divine!
LOVE YOU!!!!! MARAVILLOSA, PERFECTA!!!

Bravo!!! She is breathtaking
Glorious!!! ❤️
Wow! Voigt was absolutely magnificent.

You'd have to be a stone not to be moved by this.

Celestial.
Bravissima!

Debbie ist eine der wundervollsten Sopranistinnen.
Brawississimo ! Wunderschon !
Oh mine, I love this.

Wunderbar!!!!!!!!!!
One of the best wagnerian sopranos of all times shining also as Manon
Great!
👏👏👏👏
Dang I can't wait to be like her, I have a dramatic soprano voice just like her (:
👆🏾👆🏾👆🏾👆🏾
brava bella interpretazione
very nice. cant wait for her "frau" here in chicago.
btw, why are people still talking about the weight thing???

No one complained about Pavarotti
commandert5 that’s because he was a man and apparently that makes one exempt from overweight criticisms. Meanwhile, if a woman has an extra 10 pounds people harp about it like she’s manufacturing anthrax.
Wonderful ! She never sacrifices the cleanness of her singing to fake dramatism.

I agree! Try listening the performance by Ghena Dimitrova as well for a comparison.
Lonely forsaken and abandoned
All my hope then is over.

I'm dying. O wretched hapless woman!
I sought this region as a peaceful haven.

Listened to Freni's version, Tebaldi's version, Callas' version. Leontyne Price's version, Renata Scotto's version. Caballe, Jessye Norman didn't do this one. Couldn't find Teresa Stratas. Ghena Dimitrova's version, Renee Fleming's version.
Renata Scotto's version ranked #1 for me. Renee Fleming's version ranked #2 for me. Deborah Voigt's version ranked #3 for me.
All of this ridiculous ranking. This isn’t Formula One or whatever
Brava. Is the violoncellist Rostropovitch?
She's better... There's a 60 minutes episode of her after surgery on here that shows here singing the love duet from Tristan und Isolde with Ben Heppner that is out of this world!
PERFETTA. Puccini would have find this perfect!
She had a marvelous and powerfull voice ! What a great disaster and she was very well interpreting...Now her voice is just ok for "musicals and operettas !!!
goood
Is it a semitone or so lower, or is it me?
i liked her better when she was heavier...the voice was nicer to listen to

Damn that bytch can sing!
Dramatic soprano? The nerve. Voigt was a true lyric soprano.
No, it is not.
