      Life sentences are extremely rare in Australia - as of 2022, there were less than 400 inmates who were given life sentences for hom*cide - that's NATIONALLY.
      It is used only for extremely rare cases, usually criminals who accumulate multiple victims. Additionally, "life sentence" doesn't always mean "until the inmate isn't alive". Even a sentence of 10 years can be called a "life sentence" in Australia. The legal system is completely different, particularly as the death penalty was abolished in 1985.
      Food for thought: hom*cide rates are more than three times lower in Australia than in the USA per capita (0.86 vs 3.8 per 100,000 in 2021).
      I know it still doesn't feel like justice for victims and their families, though. :(

      In Australia the sentencing rate, especially for violent crimes are shamefully and disgustingly lenient. In all honesty, even for some of the worst crimes I’ve heard of go on here can I remember a life sentence being ruled without some kind of parole being available. Especially when it comes to CSO’s the prosecution rate and how protected they are is shameful.

    • @kayleigh3648
      @kayleigh3648 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Honestly this wasn’t that bad if u compare it to other cases where they have gotten off with way lesser sentences. Considering it was one murder (not multiple), and how he turned himself in, that’s a pretty average sentence. Although it’s obvious he’s EXTREMELY crazy & delusional, I guess the idea is that he *might* be rehabilitated during those 35yrs of treatment while he’s locked up. Im not saying I agree with the sentence, I’m just saying there have been many ppl who have done worse and got much lighter sentences.
      Another thing to consider- if they give ppl who turn themselves in a lighter sentence, its sets the precedent to the general public that if you confess you’ll get a lighter sentence. Which is how it should be! We WANT ppl confessing! If we give them the same exact sentence as all killers, there will be no motivation for killers to confess. The major problem with lack of confessions is that (if theres no solid proof), the killer will walk free entirely due to lack of evidence! Another issue is if the jury finds them not guilty... So if they get a confession, they can skip the trial altogether and not have to worry about the jury finding them innocent and risking them getting off. So it’s much better to get the confession and give them 30yrs rather than risk them getting 0 years! Just food for thought… 🤷‍♀️

      Genuinely asking-but in the US, if our local/city police don’t want to take a report, we can go to the county (sheriffs). If they don’t care, we could then try for the state police. Or the state’s federal agencies (like the Colorado Bureau of Investigations), maybe even FBI-also federal but m for over state lines or multi state crimes. If your local police station won’t help, where else can you go? Can you report to other agencies? I think I’ll get a better answer here than if I Google it. 🤷🏻‍♀️

    • @rlkroset
      @rlkroset 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@kittikat2318 you can get protection orders put in place with your state police, and reach out to DV support communities, & organisations. They do have a DV goverment fund, up to $15,000 for support to get out of a DV situation, which is obviously amazing and I do applaud this. Must note: almost no advertisement or education is given to women about this, I get what they’d say about why that is, but I think posting DV support phone lines on the inside of our public toilets isn’t going to solve the problem quicker than advertising how someone CAN get out could.
      And there’s a few more honourable mentions I’m sure I’m missing, but overall you can only go to your State Police to have legal action taken, if they don’t listen, you can go back again, request to speak to someone else, be asked to submit an online form instead of speaking to someone (if any Australian is ever reading this, beg to put in a statement in person because f that stupid website so hard) and just keep pushing for your protection.
      You can get assistance from these DV organisations to get to Women’s shelters, a safe place, a safety plan, support and guidance, and even just someone to talk to, they do very amazing things that our government and police should be doing. And they carry a major load of protecting women, and women’s individual rights in Australia. They do majority of the education in schools and online. It’s like Australian Government and Police have just given up and are relying on these amazing people to do their work, therefore ensuring that perpetrators go free and women live in fear, constantly defending themselves. I’ve witnessed it countless times as a young manager in a retail space of all women, for over 10 years, and it’s heart breaking

Honestly, it scares me that nobody saw/can see what a dangerous man this is. Unfortunately, this behavior almost always comes from someone you know, even if it’s someone you don’t know well. Even in this case, she barely knew the guy, but that in person interaction at their work was enough for him to start doing this. It’s more likely to come from a friend of a friend or someone you’ve come across a few times than to come from a stranger. And it’s more likely to come from a current or former partner. Most violent crimes and sex crimes are the same way. It isn’t a creepy stranger we all need to look out for, it’s a trusted family friend who gets a little too attached, or a controlling boyfriend, or a friend who freaks out after they don’t get exactly what they want, or an acquaintance who gets too attached. We can’t just hope to avoid awful people, we need to have the skills to recognize signs of a problem before things get dangerous.

    In Germany a life sentence is only 25 years. If the prisoner is obviously still a danger to society, they can keep him longer. Our justice system is really mild, especially compared to the US, where people get more than humanly possible.
    While the idea to give people a chance to change for the better is really nice when it comes to certain crimes, I don't think murderers deserve that kindness.

      Xiaozheng Lin... killed 2 women in Melbourne in 24 hours. He was convicted to 15 years, 9 year non parole. With time served he could be out in 7 years. They made a DEAL with him. Make it make sense!

    Hey Kendall, I’m from Australia and unfortunately life over here is only 25 years. It’s disgusting I would prefer your justice system than ours .
    Thanks Alison

      Its appalling that his sentence is actually harsh (top end) here in VIC for taking a life :(

    It’s a shame sentencing isn’t done more like in America! Here in the UK it’s not unusual for ‘life’ to mean 20-25 years. It needs to change for people like this!

      Technically “life” in Australia is 20 years. However, many judges now place a higher number of years of sentencing before allowing parole

    HOW IS STALKING NOT ILLEGAL!?!? IT SHOULD BE ITS OWN CRIME, NOT EVEN A SUBSET OF HARASSMENT. STALKING KILLS.

    How horrible! Not only the crime, but also the " punishment "....Celeste and her family deserve so much better. RIP, sweet girl.

    Social media has made it easier for stalkers to stalk and harass their victims and it isn’t just an aspect of social media. I think officers who shrug off reports of harassment like this should be reprimanded make it clear that you don’t shrug off victims.

    As a mother of 4 little girls I am so terrified of what's to come as they grow older. My oldest is almost a teenager. Hearing this mother broke my heart. This world can be so devastating. This young lady was so beautiful and would have done something great in life. Some people are monsters why couldn't he ask for help he knew what was in his head.

And today seeing u with ur husband being all happy and talking about ur own foundation makes me so happy. Gud luck with this initiative and I hope u continue to grow and help those in need.

    As an Australian this horrific crime happened in my area. It is typical….unfortunately in Australia, police do nothing, until basically this happens Intervention orders are useless….it’s a joke….murder sentences are beyond ridiculous. This family has gone through hell. Her mother has fought for justice for Celeste but to no avail. My heart breaks for her.
