@@patientmental875 sorry let me rephrase he is good, he is not great! He puts up average stats and is going to be captain by name alone and even he knows that.
Dude, they'd played just the night before, and winning 8 in a row before finally losing on the tail end of a back 2 backer, where Pittsburgh was lucky to hang on after nearly blowing a 4 goal lead is hardly the Canucks "needing to wake up."
They win against some good teams and then they loose to Penguins! Silovs was not very good, but he was totally abandoned by poor defense. 5 goals on 11 shots!
Silovs wasn't to blame for 4 of the goals, but the 5th one he could have had. That was a big save the team needed and didn't get and had he stopped that one, and all other things being equal, the game would have gone into OT. The other 4 goals were a strange bounce off the boards, followed by 3 great plays by the likes of Crosby and Malkinin, combined with some less then stellar D coverage on 1 or 2 of them. Can't really fault the D for the PPG, as that's why they call it a "Power Play" -- the other team has an extra man, so somebody's always going to be open as there's not enough D to cover everyone.
Oh look, the Penguins won a game even though they nearly blowing a 4 goal lead. Can we actually have a goalie that doesn't blow a lead in the 3rd period?
Not all comebacks can succeed you know, as terrible they were in the first period, they battled in the third. Silovs has really got to step up on his goaltending performance. Giving up four goals in the first period is highly unacceptable. Here goes our road winning streak.
What makes a great team is knowing NOT to put themselves at a numerical disadvantage. TWICE,. In the last 10 minutes. 2x absolutely stupid and needless penalties ruined Canucks's chances of tying the game, no question.
He's not benefitting from sitting for long stretches. They should rotate him and Young or Tolopilo so he can still get some game time. until Demko comes back. Silovs should be ready to be backup in a year or two.
Canucks have this strange ability to play up or down to the level of their opponents. They need to find a consistency to their play. I don't think they have played a full 60 minutes this year. Some games they have a great start and then hang on for dear life for the last 15 minutes. Consistency is needed
To be fair, they've also been lacking several of their top stars throughout the last few weeks, and our top goalie all season. And Boesser's only just come back off a 3 week injury, so it'll take him a couple games to get his timing back, plus this was 2 games in 2 nights on the road. We've not really seen them with their full roster in place. Key payers who've been missing at times this season: 1- Thatcher Demko 2- Brock Boesser 3- JT Miller 4- Dakota Joshua 5- Derrek Forbort (would really help reduce some of those defensive breakdowns if he were healthy) *Elias Petterson - while he wasn't really "injured" per se this season, he was coming off that nasty knee injury from last season that took him off of his game, plus an off season spent mostly rehabbing from that injury, so I expected it would take time for him to get his confidence back, and start playing his game, then expected he might then go through a snake bit period where he's playing good, but not getting the results, before we see the real Elias Pettersson back, and that's exactly what happened.
I do see the 5th as stoppable, but the other 4? Which one of them was also stoppable? The first one was a weird bounce off the boards right to a Pens player with a wide open net, nothing Silovs could do about that, nor the D. The next one was a Sidney Crosby Play, again, not much he could have done there. The 3rd was a PPG plus a Malkinin Play, again, what's Silovs supposed to do there? The 4th was another Sidney Crosby setup, Silovs had ZERO chance on that one. So which one?
5 goals on 13 shots... Silovs needs more time in the AHL, but I'm not going to act like defence was good because it wasn't. Made it interesting at the end, but comeback fell short.
The first Pens goal was an odd bounce off the end boards right to a Pen with an empty net, nothing SIlovs or the D could do there. Then was a Crosby Play, again can't always stop a legend like Sid, he'll get his share no matter what you do. Then a penalty and a Malkinin Play, again, can't always stop a guy like him, he'll beat you with great plays here and there no matter what. Then a D breakdown and another Crosby Play to take advantage, and finally a Silovs whiff when he could have made a big save to keep it closer and that's what made the difference. That 5th goal was Silovs' chance to buy at least a point for his team on back to back nights, where I don't necessarily expect the team to be capable of playing a full 60 minutes due to the inevitable fatigue factor. It's times like that you need your goalie to bail you out on plays like goal #5 for the Pens. Silovs makes that big save and all else being equal, and it's a 4-4 tie headed into OT and the Silovs and the Canucks steal a point on a game they probably should have lost.
I only fault Silovs for not stopping the 5th goal. That one was saveable, and was an opportunity for Silovs to buy his team a chance at a comeback with a big save and he didn't do it. The other 4, he really didn't have a chance. Either strange bounces, or great players making great plays or the D in front of him blowing their assignments and hanging Silovs out to dry. Still, they had just played the night before, so not surprised they couldn't bring their A game to this one. They really needed Silovs to step up and make a big save or 2 and take a couple of the Pens goals away from them, but he didn't.
Of course they gotta choke on tieing their franchise road win winning streak. O well. First road loss in a long long time. Kinda feel sorry for Silovs after last year's glory. This season he just can't catch a break. What's his save percentage now? Like 800 or something. Yikes!
I don’t get it, what’s Tochets problem? Nikanen played so well against Boston, why put Silovs(who hardly see ice time) against a solid team like Pittsburg? Don’t get me wrong, Silovs played great as he always does, I do see Myers tho skating like he still thinks it’s summer camp. He’s gotta play his position better since he can’t skate worth s***. That’s like asking a giraffe to avoid cheetah by going 0-60 in under 3 seconds. I like how they never gave up tho, they battled back, but the clock was against them. At least they know they have what it takes against teams like Pittsburg who are one of the dominant teams in the East(record wise). Still tho, sitting Nikkenan after a hot outing in Boston doesn’t make sense.
The Boston game was Yesterday, so Lank needed a break. And it's Lankanen, not "Nikanen", The just played yesterday thing also no doubt was a factor in the Canucks playing down to the Pen's level tonight too, along with them missing guys like Demko, Miller and Forbort, who's ability to play smart defense is definitely something the team's missing right now as Myers and Soucy don't have it this year, and Juulson's not ready for that role yet -- if he'll ever be.
Silovs is a young goalie who's not ready for the NHL yet. Give him time and don't be a dumbass trying to run our future stars out of town because they *GASP* NEED TIME TO DEVELOP PROPPERLY!
You answered your own question. Lankinen stood on his head yesterday, last thing we need is him being over played and getting injured. Not worth it when we have a 90% + chance of making play offs at this point too.
the next game was the next day. Play Lanks 2 days in a row and he probably gives up 5 goals in the first period and has to get pulled due to exhaustion, and the game's totally blown before it even starts. Keep in mind Lankanen has never played No 1 minutes before - having always been someone else's backup, so don't expect him to play 100% of the games. He was not intended to be the No 1 this season either, just a more reliable option until Demko was ready, which it's looking like Thatch is going to be ready to return soon now. I think it's increadibly lucky that Lankanen's risen to the occasion as he has and carried the team like a no 1. I think he'll be a no 1 legitimately in a year or 2 with this start under his belt.
