"Okay, it's the end of a long weekend. I've got work tomorrow. Got to clean the place, meal prep, get to- *sees thumbnail* ...well, guess I know what I'll be doing instead for the next 40-something minutes". Seriously, a contender for my personal favorite vid you've put out so far, from the commentary to the gags, just lots of fun across the board (minus, of course, getting That Song stuck in my head again). Whatever the capricious algorithm says, you should just plain be proud of this one. Hope you had a good Thanksgiving.
@@ASkeleton Forgive the late addendum, especially since you might know this stuff already, but a few tidbits in case you ever get in the mood for another go at Radiant Silvergun: - Before you start the game you can change the "chain mode" from "Original" to "Ikaruga", which makes it so any set of 3 like-colored kills keeps the chain going, and you don't have to only focus on one type of enemy per stage. - Also, unlike Arcade mode, Story mode saves your weapon levels across runs, so as long as you keep playing you eventually won't have to worry about leveling up your power at all if you'd rather just focus on "raw" survival. - I found it interesting that you liked the music except for the first stage, since like a lot of Sakimoto's work almost every song in the game is actually built around a single motif. That being said, I'd name "Evasion" as my personal favorite track; when that boss swoops in and the music changes, it's an all-time great "oh snap, guess it's ON now" moment in my book. In any event, I readily acknowledge that RSG is absolutely not a game for everyone, and completely understand if anybody doesn't get into it. One thing I'll always have to give it credit for, however, is that it truly feels "epic" in a way that no other shmup does, and that alone makes it hard for me not to come back to from time to time. Thanks again for the great vid, and hope you enjoy the upcoming holidays.
Banger video for an absolute banger lineup of games. As a fellow casual shmup fan, Devil Blade Reboot blew me away; It strikes that perfect difficulty of "not actually that hard by genre standards, but just tough enough to keep you constantly engaged," with absolutely INSANE visuals and killer music. It's probably just second to Drainus as my favorite shmup honestly. Also I did not believe you when you initially talked about that Murasaki soundtrack....but then you played the clips and I immediately went and bought that game LOL
Late comment, but amazing video as always Skelly. I always enjoy seeing more casual funny videos in the niche game genres I enjoy such as fighters, so your more casual stance is greatly appreciated along side your editing style. I will say with Radiant Silvergun is much more enjoyable in Story Mode (arguably the main mode of the game) because it builds up your levels between playthroughs as you gain additional lives, and also making it feel less distressing to learn the levels more. I think its the best way to play and makes it more fun inherently because you can continue to progress over all of your playthroughs, while naturally learning the game. Of course if you still don't enjoy it, that's a-ok. Just thought I would put my stance here since you didn't mention story mode.
Thank you for another fun wave of delving into a variety of shmups! :D Felt nice to get a taste of their mechanics and hear your overall thoughts on everything. Also appreciated the name of the current game being shown on the bottom left as it was being talked about! ^^ Aaaaaand some of your skits were fun as always, namely the Arkanoid Adrenaline injection [6:54], the Gunvein "Graveyard without the G" (bars, by the way) [22:46], the Hazelnut Hex intro [18:09] (the lil pause between the bowl and the controller being placed down was funny), the Scissor Girl [25:10], and the Devil Blade Reboot intro [43:22] (you looked like you were pretty engaged and having a great time)! Lastlyyyy, some additional thoughts: - Yessss, I've been getting into Gunvein as of late too and it's pretty awesome! I find the analog controls interesting too, wonder if I'll utilize them to their fullest extent... - The Psyvariar Delta cameo in Cotton Rock 'n' Roll is so coooool - Murasaki Tsurugi seems very interestiiing, thanks for mentioning it! - Congrats on the Devil Blade Reboot leaderboard positioning you showed!
When I was a kid my dad collected arcade and pinball machines, I cannot describe how much I miss having super off-road and Spy Hunter in my basement to play at anytime. Also if you haven’t you should give enter the gungeon a play, you might really like it
Oh hell yeah, time to drop everything and add 15 new games to my Steam wishlist. I can't believe this is the fifth episode. The first one was the entire reason I subscribed.
Hey Skelly, thanks for the great video! I added a number of titles to my wishlist on Steam because of it. I just wanted to say that I have your video running in the background while I am away from the computer to help with your viewer retention. I hope you don't get discouraged with how the analytics go for this one, just keep working and you will get 30K+ subscribers soon (and then some)!!
I still haven't finished the video, but thank you for all the recommendations! Sadly I saw you posted it today when the sale was over. Will definitely get some of these such as HazelNut Hex, Cotton Rock N Roll when I have the chance, they look very fun. EDIT: Just finished the video, I want to say that I am in the same boat as you are. I casually enjoy shoot em ups. I don't really look for max score or challenge, I look for fun. I like your other non-shootemups videos too since I play those more, but I am glad you did a new video on this series!
Briiiiiiliant video!!!!!!! Keep up the great work!!.... bY the way, for me, the MAIN point of akai katana is the slash mode- that mode has one of the best shmup specail attacks EVER.
Watching your FRB footage... you gotta use those rockets more! The name of the game is using rockets to increase your combo, which makes enemies drop more coins, which lets you fire more rockets (which also can delete enemy bullets in lieu of bombs!), etc etc etc. It's so much fun. Another thing you may not have noticed is the small scale Star Fox branching paths that slightly adjust enemy patterns or add different phases to boss fights, as well as lead to one of eighteen different ending variations that give closure to basically the whole cast. It's a little thing, but as someone who does not play shmups at all, it made the necessary replays before I could actually, y'know, beat the game much more interesting since there was often the possibility to see something different happen if I tried different ideas.
Pls never stop making these reviews, Skelly ❤ Ever since your rayman origins video ive been following your channel and its been really fun Btw I picked up at least 2 Shmups from this video :' )
Definitely not my favorite genre, but a few of these looked interesting. Great video though man. Your passion for these games really shines through. Keep up the great work.
The Japanese name for Truxton is Tatsujin, which translates to "expert" or "master." If you memorize the entire game, you can breeze through and make it look easy. Its from a time when kids would crowd around a machine and watch each other play.
Since you featured Angel at Dusk, I recommend checking out another shmup by Akiragoya: Steel Vampire. I'm going to grab the demo for Cyberblocker. It looks fun. Thanks. Skelly!
25:07 is that Sleepy Princess in the Demon Castle reference?! Seriously, that anime would be a good metroidvania. Imagine the plot is all about trying to make anything that will help her good sleep.
30:24 I owned the Sega Saturn version back in the day... bought it off of someone who didn't want it anymore... I wonder why. I remember the store owner asked me, because he knew no one else as crazy as I am lol. That Darius Silver hawk was a game back then, it looked 1:1 like in the arcade with a killer soundtrack. But yeah... I beat it on normal back in the day!
I've never been that into shmups, but The Void Rains Upon Her Heart is a notable exception, one of the only "Early Access" games thats been that way for years yet still gets multiple updates a month. Very happy it got spotlighted in a yakkocmn video a while back, but i'd love to see your opinion on it too ^_^
I love co-op horde shooters ala Deep Rock Galactic, Killing Floor 2, Payday3. But I also love retro gaming, and in particular shmups. I have a modded OG Xbox and an Xbox 360, both are loaded with shmups, Cave shooters and the like... I suck at them, but freaking love them!
I never would have guessed your favorite of game genre is Bullet Hell/shoot em up games. Props to it though these games always have a sense of keeping you engaged with music/art style/soft novels and just taking your time away if you need to Kill time
As much as I'd like ∀kashicverse to be on the list, I don't think it would be friendly towards A Skeleton. It doesn't trap you in using your default normal shot like Astral Gunners, buuuut it is the opposite of pick up and play. It is also brutal towards mistakes. It's one of those games with an achievement for getting a game over within 20 seconds of starting. I enjoy Akashicverse a lot but it has narrow appeal.
I wasn't aware of the new akai katana shin on steam. A cave shmup? Are there more cave shmups on there that I'm not aware of, until now I only knew dodonpachi resurrection, mushihimesama and deathsmiles 1+2
i recommend the void rains apon her heart if your doing another one, its the best rougelike of all time in my opinion! deserves way more recognition (oh mb you beet me to it lol)
Have you considered talking about some of the old Kraisoft Schmups? They only made like 4, but they're all interesting, and supposed to be connected. Astrobatics, Atomaders 1 & 2, and Alien Sky are the titles.
I think I'm finally kicking it. But Radiant Silvergun was once reviewed by my gaming icons at Good Game Spawn Point. A hit tvshow for gamers in Australia. Even the arguments of boss after boss was one of their complaints

That's such a dastardly tactic... Make the boss sooooo boring that the only reason you get hit is because you were glazing over. Edit: God Damnit, the fact that Hazelnut Hex isn't on PS5 makes me very sad. I NEED IT!
I had a terrible dilemma as to what to do about my steam awards game of the year nomination. I had to go for UFO 50 because of the content. Voted DBR for best game on Deck though, even though I play it on PC. It's a masterpiece. (Also glad to see Flying Red Barrel in there, big fan of that one!)
i don't play shmups - like, at all - can you play through something like the Darius Collection with infinite continues or does it actually game over you eventually?
Yeah you can! And you'll have a good time. Especially with Darius because of the branching paths...but actually the better way to do it is to use save states (think of like in doom when you save your game)... which are also included in the collection. The problem with many old arcade games is that you will lose power if you die and then continue. But actually now that I think about it, Darius Gaiden does give you some power back when you continue if I recall correctly!
Man, if you want to check out a really good schmup, you should check an H game called Touhou Kimono Blast. I'm so surprised that this game didn't take off, because it is SO GOOD! I will die on that hill. Try the higher difficulties and tell me it's not good. It's such a good strategic game as you have to shoot off the clothing, but you also have to balance shooting the enemies as well. Not only that, but you also have the clothing getting in the way of your shots, so again, you have to be strategic, because your shots don't just go through the clothing. There's 4 levels for each girl. The 4th level is all 3 levels at once. In this game, you destroy the girl's clothes one layer at a time. Judge me all you want, I think it's a great game, H game or not. In defense of Deep Space Waifu, did you ever play on 2x mode or gentlemen mode? I think you'd have a little bit more respect for it if you played it on those difficulties instead. 2x mode makes everything 2 times faster, and gentlemen mode is where you CANNOT destroy her clothes or you lose. That makes the game a whole lot more challenging. But you know, opinions and stuff. You're welcome to whatever you'd like to believe. Also you don't have to worry about DSW games anymore, becuase the dev abandoned that franchise a long time ago. Dude, you want to talk about difficulty, Ikaruga takes one of those cakes home. It's messes with your mind having to switch back and forth between light and dark. It's CRAZY! I honestly couldn't ever beat it, but damn is it a good game. Also also, REALLY good FREE schmup on Steam is Jigoku Kisetsukan: Sense of the Seasons. I was blown away by how good this absolutely free game was.

Of course Sans has a gaming channel...
Not funny dude it's over used
I know this is so besides the point but you really seem like a fun guy to be around. Great humor. Keep it up.
Thank you kindly
HOLY SHIT! An Air reference in 2024?!
I remember buying that anime 4 episodes at a time on DVD
I did the same with Tenchi Muyo
@@ASkeleton Ahh the DVD anime days, I don't miss that! So expensive... 😭
43:13 glad you enjoyed the gift Skelly boy. I could have been a troll and got you R-Type Final 2...but fuck that.
😂
Dude please keep making videos they are some of my favorite I've ever seen.

Aw, you didn't include Blue Revolve Double Action. Are you going to do a separate video for that one?
Yeah that came out a little late for this vid. Next time for sure.

Ah yes shumps, the thinking man genre.
Really great video and so many excellent recommendations, thanks! Just have to subscribe :-)
I think I'm finally kicking it.
But Radiant Silvergun was once reviewed by my gaming icons at Good Game Spawn Point.
A hit tvshow for gamers in Australia.
Even the arguments of boss after boss was one of their complaints
YOU ARE NOT EVEN PUTTING THE ORANGE JUICE STRAW IN YOUR MOUTHHHHHHHHH
Truxton is indeed unnecessarily brutal, I do quite like the megadrive port, difficulty slightly relaxed and still plays nicely
Check out Gyroblade, it reminds me of mid to late 80's shmups like Tiger Heli
Well, that’s two votes for Devil Blade Reboot GOTY

I LOVE THIIIIIIIIS

You should try out a game name "Gunfield". It is a roguelike vertical shmup and quite fun, but all you do is evade bullets.
Will check it out. Thanks!
