This will work in about 20% of games, the other 80%, your team cannot survive 4 v 5 and you simply don't have the space to farm. It's more impressive his team allowed him the space rather than his basic AFK farming.

People need to know how good illusion runes are even if you can't use them to farm, I still see people denying a free rune just because it's an illusion one, and I'm at 5k.

If I played your solo queue games, I would "free farm" and win 80% of them. Nightfall would win 100% of them. (Guessing your mmr 3-5k) stop crying and focus on improving.
