Love Ruth's cheerful personality and wealth of knowledge, I've watched everything I can find with her, awesome woman ❤❤❤ she's taught me so much on our past, she should be a household name! Lots of love from Australia xx
Ruth Goodman is a treasure for us all. Her historical series has been an invaluable source of knowledge. With all our modern ways we don't know how to survive with out them. I am so grateful for this wealth of how to, just in case.
Ruth is just an amazing source of knowledge on practical women's "homework". I live in the United States, but even here coal has been a huge contributor to domestic life. My grandmother's generation and certainly my great-grandmother's were very familiar with the big black stoves of old. They cooked, cleaned and kept their homes warm and running with coal stoves. I would be completely lost in the sauce, so to speak, in being able to manage such a stove myself. Easy, lazy me has had the utter convivence of either natural gas ran or electric ranges for the whole of my life. It takes steps to get to points like this. I love how much research, care, dedication and sheer determination Ruth has put into this by gone era to show us how we have come to the point in domestic life we have now, BECAUSE of coal stoves and the life changing impact they had on society.
I have learned so much about lost skills and home remedies, amazing stuff! Thank you so much Ruth for your passion and your work on the history of 'every day people'.
I live in a 100+ year old house on the Canadian prairies ( no trees). In our county there is a large number of coal deposits. My husband is the fourth generation to live on this farm. We now use natural gas. Wind provided lights here and there were batteries on benches in the basement. Thank you for putting this content out there for me to learn and appreciate.
I enjoy your history series. I agree that so much of history has disappeared because it fell under the purview of women, and in so many ways, women were invisible. We get comments like 'women's work', or 'done in the normal/usual way'. And, to be honest, we are still bad about writing things down. I will never forget having to go to my 80 yr old neighbors for instructions on how to light a coal fire in our very old Rayburn. Thank you for all your work and sharing of experiences in history.
So thrilled to see Ruth, to hear from Ruth, and to have another Ruth book to add to my library! You, my dear Ruth, are an international treasure!!! Thank you, for this, and for all your work! I do so hope you'll be coming to Seattle again, sometime soon!! All best!!
I really love Ruth Goodmans social history knowledge and enthusiasm for her subject is quite a change to the current depressing news . Have you made the Night soilman research a separate topic anywhere . I have evidence in my house where one can see how this was managed on a day/day basis
A lot of times I've personally wondered what our climate (social, economic, and meteorological) would be like if people had kept the trees, had kept being stewards of the forest in England and France, prioritizing the health of the whole forest ecosystem, rather than the health of field crops.
I wonder too (and highly recommend reading Children of the new forest by Marryat if you haven't already. Just for fun, it's fiction haha) but then taking into consideration the huge growth in population we've had since then, I also wonder if it would be actually possible. Even just the amount of trees that would have to be burned in order to heat homes and cook would be astronomical. We need to get our food from somewhere. I just don't know. As with all progress there's the pros and cons. Certainly something to ponder!
Yes, it's down-right insulting how the patriarchy completely ignores women, even today. Even more insulting when you know that through the centuries, it is women who have kept things running smoothly, while a great many men played at war or drank themselves to death at the pub. If it was a tough job, a dirty job, an unglamorous job, then men usually gave it to a woman to do.
I would love to see Ruth, Peter & Alix play the roles of wealthy people of all those periods of history they played as poor farmers. If that makes any sense.
The practical experience led to this revelation Ruth is talking about in the video about the domestic revolution. I find that way more fascinating than the overdone histories of the wealthy lords and ladies.
I pray you'll find someway to filter out the terrible background noise and republish all these videos of Ruth because I love to listen to her talk about history! I just can't hear what she's saying! Please!
It probably has more to do with the ridiculously over controlling copyright laws than discrimination. The companies have such tight control over such things that its insane. Not that the vast amount of money made from the sale of the material is realized by the authors, artists, etc., as much of it goes right back to the company and the artists get their pittance...
Ruth Goodman and Kathy Hipperson (Mrs Crocombe) are my dream team of ancient/historical reenactment.

Any idea where to get this in the States?
You can order it for international delivery via the link in the video description. Doesn't come out in the US until Oct 20th 2020 though.
Or import it from Amazon uk
I was able to download it for free with my audible membership. I wish Ruth had done all the narration, but it’s still fascinating stuff!
Love Ruth but what’s the noise? Can’t hear her properly
It’s super annoying that the Audio book hasn’t been made available to British listeners only American! Absolutely discriminatory and unfair
I go to butcher green grocer supermarket
Just a question... If Florence Nightingale was nursing women instead of soldiers would she have become famous?
