This young man did an excellent job. Kudos. He's going to be a great airline pilot someday. Also, Foreflight, and ADS-B is the best thing to happen to GA in decades. It's kept me out of trouble more than once. The situational awareness it affords is incredible. I was based at KLLR for years, and losing an engine and contending with the marine layer was an ever present concern. Outstanding interview.

Remember when Captain Sully landed that jet on the Hudson River a few years back?
Well, what Matt Keane did was even more impressive. Matt only has a few hundred hours of piloting experience. Sully had thousands of hours as a commercial pilot. Matt couldn't see his emergency landing spot. Sully could SEE the river when he lost power. Big jets are very stable. Matt had to fly that squirrley little Cessna dead-stick, down through 1,000 feet of zero visibility fog, while lining up for an invisible beach, without getting disoriented, stalling, and spinning into the sea. Matt accomplished all this without proper instruments. All he had was an Ipad for navigation and spatial orientation. He popped out of that fog just 400 feet above the ocean, without an engine, and had to bank over to land on that beach. He managed all of this without hurting anyone - or the airplane.
    Absolute legend.

To any airline companies out there: I want that man flying my plane and I don't care how many hours of experience he has (yes, I know there are legal requirements and all but still). That man has something that you just can't effectively teach to anyone who doesn't already have it in them and that is how to stay cool when the shit hits the prop and use whatever you have with you to make the best of a shitty situation. I've never been on a flight that had anything but some issues with a thunderstorm but shit happens and that's the kind of guy I want as PIC if and when it does.

Breaking out at 400' and then making a turn less than 30 degrees to line up with the beach..... so this guy basically did his own non-precision Zulu approach at minimums with a misaligned approach course and runway......more or less. I think Matt is going to have a sunny career in the airlines. What company wouldn't hire a kid who can keep his head screwed on that straight during as severe a crisis as any low-time pilot could imagine? This event is also special in light of all the recent fatal mishaps in general aviation, that it had a great outcome for everyone. I'm going to forward the link of this video to my son-in-law, who is also on the airline track, he's a CFII in Miami, and had also had a recent emergency similar to this one. He had his DPE's son as a student and had a partial power failure on takeoff (failed magneto), but made a safe landing on the parallel runway. Matt, you and my SIL Jorge are carrying the torch for all the new pilots who will be our future of commercial aviation. Bravo Zulu to you.
One last thing; did the passengers on this discovery flight discover that they still want to become pilots? You set the bar for them.

I took my discovery flight in a Tripacer with a 20 dollar coupon cut out of Flying magazine from my Jr High school library .
Rode my bike 12 miles to get there, with no knowledge by my parents of the adventure.
“Where is your permission slip from your parents?”
I ran out of the office and came back in looking sad.
      I missed them !
He talked to me for a while and I guess having read all the Frank Kingston Smith books like “I’d rather be flying “ and everything else in my school and public library paid off.
We pre flighted the plane and flew!
I actually was so small I could not see over the dash so when he said I could fly I used the turn and bank indicator as reference.
He said I did great and perhaps he was telling the truth?
Anyway 20 bucks then was like 200 now so that was my last flight till my uncle ( Sam) provided me a 45 minute ride in a T-2 jet trainer.
I got my gliders license later but never my power.
Long story making me understand what trouble I could have gotten the CFI in if something went wrong in the Tripacer!
      No parental permission.
Anyway I had my first lesson under IFR condtions since I couldn’t see out even without a hood…

This was an incredible outcome! I will be honored to share a flight deck with Matt in the future. I hope this didn't completely scare the discovery flight couple away from aviation for too long.

Matt passed the "keeping your head" test, which you don't get from the safety net of a flight simulator. The only real test for that is in an actual emergency and he passed it with flying colors.

Hell with the 1500hrs needed, the kid has already proven he's a thinker, calm, and competent Enough.
I say let him interview right now.. get the kid into a training class...
    Good job Matt.
    Thanks for the interview Juan

Agreed. I love Juan's obvious respect and admiration for this young pilot. Juan is always ready to recognize and celebrate the accomplishments of the young, and as you say Phil, his face was "beaming through out the interview"! As for the interview itself, Juan handled it masterfully without getting in the way of the story or the young pilot telling it. Very impressive!

What a great heart warming story, this pilot did everything right to ensure a positive outcome. It is sad to say that so many times situations like this go so very wrong, this young man has demonstrated with the correct training a positive outcome can be assured.

Wow! Really quite a story. Took me back the part about breaking through the clouds to see only the open ocean. Sounds like this was a matter of both Lady Luck and good skill. Also coming to a stop only 30 ft. from the lifeguard! Must have woken him up! I can just see it - no engine, quiet - suddenly *Poof!* there's a Cessna that materialized right in front of you on the beach! Glad everyone's alright. Matt can be my instructor any day 😀

My favorite content on this channel are the interviews with pilots who've been through events, I sure hope you do more Juan. It's always great to have the pilot to talk to instead of a bad outcome.

Wow! I live near the coast, with frequent marine layer (even had some fog in this heat wave). I never even think about what if something happens to a GA pilot like this when they're flying over my head. If every pilot would stay this cool, and use the available tools, I could continue not worrying about it. Fly safe-- do the "old pilot" thing.

This reminds me of Sully's qualities: keeping cool. Quick assessment of whether to head to an airport or not, deciding to perform the rather difficult option versus the easier, but more dangerous one. And a perfect landing on a challenging surface.

This is my favorite kind of aviation video. I've been working on my instrument rating and have kept the iPad out of the equation until recently. My CFII always has his with us and he has a Stratus to go with the ADSB out in the aircraft. Outstanding airmanship on this flight!!

Great job Matt Keane! Dan Gryder in his latest video states in an engine-out situation never land on a freeway as there are too many obstacles and it very rarely has a good outcome. Instead, choose a farmer's field and land with your gear retracted or in Matt's case the beach!

For Matt... Excellent Job! Just amazing. Juan, thank you for sharing this as always. This was handled just perfectly. Great use of resources and such a good example of professional airmanship. It is so easy to find examples when things do not go well or there are examples of poor airmanship. However, this is an example of what happens when you use good headwork and professionalism in flight. There is such a double edged sword to being "feet wet" you have a much lower risk of obsticles but the prospect ending up in the drink.
Any pilot who is going to be flying over water, I strongly suggest you take water egress training. If you can can't then keep at least one thing in mind that is essential and over looked... get a reference point prior to impact. Remember, the aircraft will likely roll forward and invert. Now... forward is back and back is forward; up is down and down is now up. Wait for motion to stop, look for bubble and follow the bubbles. If you can, disconnect ICS and open your door prior to contact with the water; however do not let go of your reference point with the airframe until rapid motion has stopped.
Matt, having flown for the USCG... I can not say enough how your exceptional airmanship resulted in a phenominal outcome. This is the type of airmanship the military give out Air Medals for. JOB WELL DONE! BRAVO ZULU!
