the whole movie is a metaphor for trauma, addiction, grief, someone lost in the darkness seeking answers of why till it consumes them. I think it’s excellent
Theories say it was Jade who pushed her. My theory is that Mia was possessed with an illusion that made her think that Riley was in danger if he wasn't dead. Her mother is just another illusion to trick her into thinking she was doing the right thing. This all happened because Mia held the hand for more than 90 seconds and she herself became possessed by the hand and was trapped in the hand for others to talk to. The beginning of the movie is foreshadowing on how a possessed one becomes trapped in the hand once they are dead. Mia was acting differently ever since she was exposed to the hand for longer than 90 seconds; the guy who killed himself in the start of the movie was acting the same way Mia was acting with everyone; he killed himself and got trapped in the hand the same way Mia was trapped at the end of the movie. You can see in timer 2:30 Riley doing well after the incident. Everything was in Mia's head and that's what caused her death. This movie can be linked to the usage of drugs and how deeply they can affect people if they go overboard; you might feel good about it at first, but when you take too much, you start losing your mind.
Mia was not dumb , basically she was just a traumatized human. What's more sad is that after her people who knew her will hate her. Jade will never know that she did that under some influence. Her father will despise her for attempting to murder him. Riley will hate her too whom she loved like a lil brother . And it's not that she didn't mention that she's seeing things... She did say that some weird stuff is happening with her but her friends didn't pay heed. Her story is painfully sad
Also, none of them could see what she was seeing after they let go of the hand. So they’ll forever think she was trying to kill Riley instead of dying trying to save him 😢
Her dad will never despise her. It's the thing with being a parent, you could raise a monster and you'll still love them even if you're disgusted with their actions. What's more likely to happen here is that he'll despise himself for failing to notice her deteriorated mental health until it was far too late and now he'll have to live with the guilt of losing first his wife and now his daughter. It is still pretty sad.
Part of that is definitely the other spirits still warping her perception as she's dying, but it's also fair on behalf of those around her that lived. Mia sees the other family happily getting ready to go and the doctors walking past, but he's walking like he's unaffected by anything around him, gets into a brightly lit empty elevator while the lights go out elsewhere, and it goes up. If he was leaving, it would go down. Also, what state Mia is in at the hospital is not just her being dead, but an exit from this life to the beyond, as we also see what appears to be a sick patient sitting up in bed, staring at the wall. I think they were all dumbasses for starting this in the firstplace. If anyone challenges you to speak to the dead, or read a death book in Latin or hell go for a camping trip. Just say no.
How many people in the world play with Ouija boards? or Bloody Mary games? nothing ever happens, the assumption of most horror films, besides the franchises, is that what happens in the film is a lightning in a bottle, a singular event, not existing within a world where the supernatural is proven to exist.
@@w415800 you don't really need to see anything for you to start having problems in your personal life due to spirits of the dead attached to you, your finances, mental and physical health, and sanity can literally go downhill if you don't get help and you can end up just like this chick in this movie even without seeing anything, maybe only weird and regular nightmares.
For me the film kind of tapered off for me during the final third, but damn that closing shot gave me goosebumps. Even though looking back on it I should have seen it coming a mile away, I was completely shocked that she was on the other side of it. That ending will stick with me for a while.

Mia was being heavily manipulated by the spirits and was isolated by her friends when she started acting out. They shouldn’t have let her go over 90 seconds, or they should have been better friends.
she didnt get stuck because she went over 90 seconds. yes, she got haunted afterward, but that would have faded away. the problem is, mia used it again later that night to talk to her mom and slept with her mom without blowing the darn candle out. she must have had the door open for hours if not days. now, she had the possession ALL THE WAY open and she was haunted very strongly. it would have left if she left the hand alone and locked herself in a padded room for some time
She didn’t ask for this a lot has led up to this and she was still grieving over her mom wasn’t even aware that she was being led on by a evil spirit till it was to late yes the things she has done cannot be excused mostly the letting the kid stay possessed to talk to her”mom” but even then she didn’t deserve this terrible fate but it was also bound to happen anyway
@@CryingClouds1she played with fire. It’s her fault for not realizing that it wasn’t her mom. If you truly believe your loved one was in heaven and would haunt and terrorize you as well as ask you to do such a terrible thing and you don’t realize that’s not them you have no one to blame but yourself
To anyone confused in short from the very beginning they wanted Riley for themselves explaining why when he done the game the demon tried everything to kill him or go past the time, because they failed and Mia already went over 90 seconds she was very vulnerable and the demon played on her moms image then in the scene where Mia is in the bedroom using the hand alone she forgets to blow out the candle then the demon gets into bed with her symbolizing she has let it in. From this point Mia is manipulated to want to kill Riley to ‘free him’ and fast forward when she goes to push the wheel chair into the road slow it down and you’ll see Riley’s sister push Mia into the road with the demon still inside her meaning she’s trapped forever as they already stated if you die when it’s inside of you your trapped. The hospital represents limbo with the past present and future happening at the same time in different rooms example one room with the old guy in hospital back when Riley first went to hospital, another room with Riley recovering even one for the animal they ran over and Mia’s dad leaving hospital indicating Riley and the dad made a full recovery
I disagree with one part, i think the dad died and is ascending to the afterlife, while she is in limbo. Or is just a spirit isolated from her like she is to other spirits. The reason i feel this is the case is watch the elevator scene. When the lights go off, the up arrow intentionally flickers as he is leaving, implying that hes "ascending" while she is stuck. If he is alive, he has no reason to take the elevator up, hed need to go down to the ground floor to leave. But the arrow shows the elevator is going up, not down. And its intentionally showing that. I wish he lives because i feel bad foe him, but i really think hes dead.
@@maureenchineze937 I think the implication is that Mia's father is also dead. He heads into a brightly lit elevator, alone, that goes UP. The lights shut off around her. He's crossing over and she's in limbo.
@@squamish4244I figured this too. It's showing time pass and if he was being discharged or leaving Mia after her death why would he be going higher? Usually to leave a hospital you go to the floor that the rest of the grounds on lol.
They’re making a second one, what if she’s the villain in the second, what if she’s got it stuck in her head that she needs to kill Riley to get back in her body or maybe her body is still alive, coma, and she’s killing people using the hand just trying to get back
The implications of this ending within the larger context of the film are wild too, like could her mother have somehow been involved with the hand and that’s why she did what she did? We don’t know how far back the hand dates and we know that it’s passed around…
It wasn't her mother. It was the drowned woman who she was possessed by too long pretending to be her mother. They throw hints at this throughout, like in the bathroom when you hear wet footsteps.
The way I see it the hand represents something deeper like recreational drug use. Once you use the “drug” for too long you’re addicted you start to spiral. Then when the next person is about to use the “drug” she’s there a former shell of herself. The user not understanding the dangers that drug can have.
Mia leaped, Jade had both her hands on the back of Riley’s chair. If she had pushed Mia from that angle and with force from the hill, then Riley would’ve wheeled into the street as well.
Thats not true, the other hand was buried with the owner and they chopped off one hand, the hand is the same hand but the thing is time passed it could have been even like 60years later, bc they showed how riley recovered quickly and got discharged them she got lost in darkness, u never know what time passed with her in the darkness until the idiots gave her access to the living world again
@@liaprim4058 I doubt that the teens in this movie sold it to someone and told them how to use it at that. Actually they wanted to destroy it. And I doubt they changed their minds. Mia wasn’t being vindictive. They were all teens messing with spiritual elements they didn’t understand. Riley begged to participate. Mia said the experience was amazing for her &, probably, had pity for Riley. Mia was unaware of how much her denial & grief were clouding her judgment. Mia had no way of knowing Riley was going to start banging his head all over the place. Mia was possessed a little over time herself & didn’t understand the residual effects until later.

Mia doesn't get to pass on, she's in limbo.
I would say it's pretty strongly implied that he's dead.

This movie ending has been burnt into my brain and will forever go down as one of the best horror film endings ive ever seen. A TRUE Masterpiece of cinema dawg.
AGREED. Great way to end a horror film!
Agreed deeply. First ever horror movie that I loved watching in the cinema in years.

Scary ending for a doomed soul
It's like getting the bad ending while playing Silent Hill
Mia was being heavily manipulated by the spirits and was isolated by her friends when she started acting out.
They shouldn’t have let her go over 90 seconds, or they should have been better friends.
Problem with that other bit is they tried getting it off of her but the ghost that was in control didn’t want to let go....
she didnt get stuck because she went over 90 seconds. yes, she got haunted afterward, but that would have faded away. the problem is, mia used it again later that night to talk to her mom and slept with her mom without blowing the darn candle out. she must have had the door open for hours if not days. now, she had the possession ALL THE WAY open and she was haunted very strongly. it would have left if she left the hand alone and locked herself in a padded room for some time
She asked for it plus, that was not her mom what mother would ask their child to kill somebody look where it got her to now she’s a lost soul forever
I think it sets her up to be a decent villain if they make a sequel.
@@CryingClouds1 yeah but she needs to move on
@@Juki-fk2bx that’s not how that works dumbass if your loved one passed away you wouldn’t just move on so quickly
Nah i think she threw herself after hearing her mom say that she will take care of Riley forever
@ hard to argue when you can see it in the scene, maybe but I doubt it
I disagree with one part, i think the dad died and is ascending to the afterlife, while she is in limbo.
The ending blew my mind. 😭
the dad going in the elevator up to heaven and leaving her behind is just so good
He didn't go to heaven cos he didn't die from the injury. He was on his way home
@@maureenchineze937 he definitely did not survive that injury. he was going to a realm where he and her werent even on the same vibe.
@@squamish4244 there is no need arguing... Go read the plot of the movie. Mia's father was found bleeding not dead
They’re making a second one, what if she’s the villain in the second, what if she’s got it stuck in her head that she needs to kill Riley to get back in her body or maybe her body is still alive, coma, and she’s killing people using the hand just trying to get back
She’ll be an awesome villain
It could have nothing to do with her though. It might focus on this group at the end, or another group altogether .
A prequel is coming first and then a sequel
@@seanc41556a prequel might be better. Leave her afterlife situation up for interpretation and wonder.
Or she could warn them all to stop using the hand
Anyone else instantly know she was dead when they watched for the first time lol it’s kinda obvious
I mean yeah they don't make any attempt to hide it w the mirror and showing her corpse on the road
My question is how long was she in the hand before they used it.
This movie was so good, its up their with hereditary imo

Mia leaped, Jade had both her hands on the back of Riley’s chair. If she had pushed Mia from that angle and with force from the hill, then Riley would’ve wheeled into the street as well.
Are you blind, dumb or both?
I think the people holding her hand at the end, are the ones that had the other ceramic hand 😮 they did wonder where the other hand is and there it is
Great
Thats not true, the other hand was buried with the owner and they chopped off one hand, the hand is the same hand but the thing is time passed it could have been even like 60years later, bc they showed how riley recovered quickly and got discharged them she got lost in darkness, u never know what time passed with her in the darkness until the idiots gave her access to the living world again

I doubt that the teens in this movie sold it to someone and told them how to use it at that.
Actually they wanted to destroy it. And I doubt they changed their minds.
Not after all those incidents.
So how do you know how to use such a thing? Without instructions given to you by someone who knows it?
It's a rather unknown method of conjuring.
Unlike the ouija board.
Esp. if you bought it at the junk market. It's more likely to be used as decoration ( and work f.e. as a creepy ring holder ).
