I just disabled bitlocker because it locked my laptop without any unauthorised use (the only reason why is because i pressed update when I had no WiFi) and I had no way of accessing the key since the website didn’t work with my Microsoft account. Even older than that- I used to use HTML with a bit of java so my desktop changed it's background to the current stocks of the NYSE (New York Stock Exchange) ticker all the way back in Win98 because windows had support for HTML/XHTML for the background & even folders too. The amount of good features we used to have & have been removed is immeasurable in comparison to Micro$oft'$ "modern" offerings.
Anyone else recall back in Win98/2000 when you could use images as folder backgrounds in Windows explorer. I miss that, Bring that feature. Everyone would like to have more customization within window explorer.
well damn my windows 7 wallpaper's that move still work on windows 11 !!! we had moving wallpaper from windows 98' !!! all I want back is the 3d maze screen saver and 3d pipes back !!!
@the3nd3rmast3r3 ima keep it a buck with you, ive got an OLED G9 49" UW and i still use left alignment for the taskbar 😂 i can't get used to center alignment
Because microsoft changed. Since windows 8, windows weren't only for geek anymore, they were also for grandma and people working. They needed something bland yet distinguishable from concurrence. Sure, a hill might seems like a microsoft move, but because we know microsoft. Someone who never touched a computer before will only recognize the windows logo. So it needs to be prominent on the wallpaper, whitout much bloat so that it's not drowned by other visuals. But that's defaults wallpaper. They actually are making much more (as in quantity) nice wallpaper than before, they are just using them as daily wallpaper, not fixed wallpaper. Because people going that far in settings know what is windows and what is not.
Damn, that’s a whole lot of effort for something no one really wants in something that no one really wants to replace something people were told was the last version of this thing they would ever have to get.
man will these be handy once windows 11 is finally ready so i can switch from windows 10 we are all so hyped for these im certain imagine if they offer a calculator skin next i dont think ill be able to contain my excitement....
This was already a thing years ago lol. There were live wallpapers in Windows Vista Ultimate. They were removed in future versions of Windows for security reasons, I believe, but this isn’t some new idea.
I remember some company had come out with wallpapers for Win 95 / 98 that not only moved but some were simple games you could play. Don't remember who it was though. Point is though, animated wallpapers are SO 30 years ago.
Every so often windows decides to change my default background to a different default background. I always change it back, I wonder when they'll catch on
You can move the taskbar to the left from being centered. But moving it to be vertical in the left or right side or top of screen. Nope is not a feature.
Yeah, you better stay on 10. 11 doesn't improve anything for you, but spies a lot more and forces "features" onto you, that nobody wants. I am done with those shenanigans of Microsoft and will finally abandon them for Linux soon.
Me: I just want a stable and lightweight OS that respects my privacy. MS: Here's a paid OS that spies on you and is chock full of AI crap that no one wants... But now with dynamic wallpapers!
You pretty much nailed down the crowd, that is finally abandoning Microsoft and their ridiculous bullshit and greed and jumping onto Linux. Just as me, after 20 years of Windows use.
I finally gave in and installed the shitty Win 11, for other reasons, and the first thing I do is put the stupid taskbar to the left. Creatives shouldn't really be making decisions on USABILITY.
I just got a 7900 XTX in the software provides animated wallpaper, and I like that idea because I have OLED TV as a second monitor and avoiding burn in sounds like a good thing
Bitlocker was not hacked. Someone used a raspberry pi pico with a probe on it to get the signal sent from a separate tpm chip to the cpu in a laptop. The signal sent was the unlock key. This is only problem for bitlocker without 2 factor aka a pin code or usb drive etc. And for most hardware this sniffing attack is not possible as the tpm chip is build into the cpu. Only possible on devices using a separate tpm chip. It is basically wire tapping but on the motherboard to get the encryption key when the tpm chip sends it to the cpu. Bitlocker encryption was not cracked.
was a big fan of wallpapers until years later where i realized im not looking at it when im actually on the pc also why are they focusing on this instead of fixing the start menu and taskbar?
I've been using Explorer Patcher so long, I forgot Windows 11 defaults to the garbage centered start button. If they try to force 24H2 on me, I just might switch to the new SteamOS if the rumors of it potentially coming with an installer are true.
That’s why it’s not released yet, it’s using all the performance. Microsoft needs to get it so that it only uses half the performance, with rest being used by their preinstalled spyware
Well if they're smart, those wallpapers will only play when the focus is directly in desktop. Basically like the old days where you can use video as wallpaper*, or like the wallpaper engine.
In the late 90's I made a small program that allowed you to use windows screensavers (.scr) as your wallpaper. Everyone said it was dumb.. Well, who's laughing now? Um... Not me. It's Microsoft. Microsoft is laughing now. 😒

They are getting advanced with PC motherboards, they have ones almost as small as the part of your hand your fingers attach to.
it ain't even a minicomputer, it's a MICROCONTROLLER, they can do way less things😭

Pretty sure we had moving wallpapers all the way back in windows xp. I remember a live fish wallpaper I had as a child.
And plugins for winamp that would give trippy music visualisations as your wallpaper.
I miss the late 90's 😄
Windows vista had for sure
Way older even. Anyone remember the brick maze in 95/98?
Windows 98 having web pages as wallpapers :
Yes, even folders could have web pages as backgrounds. I fooled around with that quite a bit as a kid.
and 32 bit xp
I remember that in Windows XP it was possible to set a GIF as wallpaper, with enough resolution and quality they were really pleasing to the eye.... as far as I remember

"likely with way less anime"
I don't even know the context, but I'm already disappointed

Who here remembers Active Desktop? Motion JPEGs and animated GIFs, but unstable and a resource hog? Only me? Damn, I feel old.
Active Desktop, yes. animated GIFs, I didn't know that was an option.... Where is my windows 98 PC.....

It's always good to see companies focusing on what really matters, every one of them seem to be focusing on only the more crucial stuff
i don't know a single person who has a centered task bar on win 11. they all moved it back to the left
I like the icons to be centered. I used a windhawk mod to only move the start button to the left
My mom lol. But other than that yes.
I still have it centered. But on my work pc I have so many pinned icons that it looks like it's on the left anyway. 😅
the center task bar works well with an ultra-wide
@the3nd3rmast3r3 ima keep it a buck with you, ive got an OLED G9 49" UW and i still use left alignment for the taskbar 😂 i can't get used to center alignment
Why can't they make wallpapers like Windows 7? There were tons of really nice wallpapers that are still recognisable unlike Windows 11 wallpapers
I guess they didn’t have the idea, also it’s too late anyways, Windows 7 lost support in 2020, and for ESU program, its 2023.
@SlushiePlayeri think your calendar might be a bit out of date
Wdym? the windows 11 wallpapers are clean af

Soon people who buy computers will either not know what OS they are running or you can tell what type of tech person they are based on the OS
So they're bringing back Dynamic wallpaper that they used to have in Windows Vista
I sat there three days fixing my Laptop after upgrading to Win 11 24h2, cause it deleted my GPU.
Meanwhile Microsoft:
"We have dynamic wallpaper!"
Same, but on desktop, and it didn't delete my GPU, it just absolutely fucked up the HDR implementation so I now need to keep to sdr.

I remember being able to have animated wallpapers in Vista or 7 (can't remember which). How is this not old school technology in 2025?
Bros wearing a banging Streetlight Manifesto shirt. Focused on that for like the first few seconds, had to back up the video.
So a windows vista feature?
ah yes, DreamScene but with a different name
I go to watch 1 video on shorts, look up and see my laptop bsod, thats literally what just happened lmao
*Looks at my windows 10 wallpaper of the AE86 from Initial D drifting around a corner endlessly*
Finally bringing back an old windows Vista feature nice
I remember some company had come out with wallpapers for Win 95 / 98 that not only moved but some were simple games you could play. Don't remember who it was though. Point is though, animated wallpapers are SO 30 years ago.
Every so often windows decides to change my default background to a different default background. I always change it back, I wonder when they'll catch on

Oh, like MacOS? That cool. I hope they have triggers and such, imagine a wallpaper changing with the weather or time of day.
They can do this, but they won't let you move the Taskbar because it's "not in the code"
???? Wasn’t that a thing in Windows _10???_
@peachymunmagenta Yeah, they felt like rewriting the whole thing in Markup language because the old one written in C wasn't good enough or something.
You can move the taskbar to the left from being centered.
But moving it to be vertical in the left or right side or top of screen. Nope is not a feature.

PS3 had dynamic wallpapers back in the day.
I would rather them focused on bringing features back to the Taskbar that all versions of Windows had since 95 to 10.
So they brought back Active Desktop back from Win98?
uuuuugh can companies stop with the "Eat the slop." marketing? I can only get so alienated from my labor and fellow man.....
so they DON'T give us our movable taskbar back, but they're giving us THIS in sted? ffs -_-

I can't use my PC but at least it has a pretty wallpaper... Now it's just an expensive decoration 😂
Dang, that’d be way cooler if I couldn’t also do it on Windows XP…

Wallpaper Engine is so good. It's not even that expensive either.
Finally it will be usable

Microsoft: "Ooo, look! Pretty colours. You like the pretty colour don't you?"

Wallpaper engine is the best 5 dollars I've ever spent
It depends on if they let us turn it off is another program is maximized or in focus. It could be pretty great, actually.
