Way back in the 1970s, my dad tilled up part of the back yard so that I could put in a garden. I started seeds indoors in peat pots because somebody at the Hoak's Greenhouse had told me that cucumbers, melons, and similar types of produce do not transplant well. The guy told me that with the peat pot, I could just plant it pot and all. So that's what I did. I put one seed in each pot got my plants started and put in the ground after the last frost. They did okay and my mom used some of the cucumbers to make pickles. Last year, I got a late start; so, purchased plants ready to go in the containers. The cucumbers were Market More type cucumbers. If I could do it differently, I would have rigged some kind of trellis; but, I still got quite a few cucumbers. Soon as I rig up an indoor gardening system, I want to try Bushmaster cucumbers.
That rules Donna! Its so true, using the peat/coco/newspaper pot method, you can easily transplant all those finicky plants like Cukes and Melons. Smart!
@@sayyadahmariamfatemah1134 It depends on what you grow in and where that place is. Gary from The Rusted Garden has several ideas on how to make trellis inexpensively. In 2019, I used fabric pots to grow my plants. If I could have grown in the pots again in 2020, I would have put T posts into the ground behind the pots. Then I would have used zip ties to fasten chicken wire to the T posts. The only thing I would have had to purchase would have been the chicken wire. Even with that I might have been able to find some used chicken wire at our local Habitat store.
Oh my word I just stumbled onto your TH-cam and I have learned so much I love the way you explain things to someone who does not know anything about gardening and would love to learn
I love growing my 9wn stuff. Ive been growing my own tomatoes, herbs and jalapenos for years, in an insanely small space, and get enough out of my plants to last for quite awhile. Now i want to expand what i grow, and cukes are definitely on my list as theyre great fresh and pickled for winter use long after grow season
Here in zone 8 in the UK and I've directly sown a load, suprisingly they are already reasonable sized seedlings, around 2.5inches. I didn;t expect it, I'll be amazed if they actually mature....
I direct sow in zone 4b and I got loads of cucumbers last year. Although I did start a tray indoors but lost them all bc I couldn’t get them in the ground due to bad Spring weather so I put seed in the garden and they did great. They don’t transplant well for me.
Right on living faith. They do grow fast. And they'd have to in zone 4....isn't your growing season like 4 months? You're not alone in transplanting woes... I always cross my fingers for like a week after I move these guys from seedling trays to larger pots! Lol. Cheers!
I've tried both Dave, and honestly, they need the edge just as much as peppers, tomatoes, eggplants....its the difference between 3-5 fruit per vine and up to 8-10 fruit per vine! Plus I just love starter plants. I can extend the crop that's in the ground that much longer, doing true succession gardening! Cheers bro.
Thanks Jeff…you are a wealth of info. Just so glad I came across your channel. I live in central Newfoundland and gardening can be a challenge for sure. Ours summers are usually short,,,so growing indoor starters are usually a must! 🇨🇦💕
Thank you for the video! A few questions: 1) when are you supposed to place cover and remove cover? 2) how much water do you add on the tray? 3) once planted the seeds indoor, how long should I have the pots and tray by the window to get exposed to the sunlight? 4) once the seeds sprouts, how long should I have the pots and tray by the window to get exposed to the sunlight?

😳😳😳 I planted my cucumber seeds this past Saturday evening and they were literally popping out of the soil this morning (Tuesday)- 2 1/2 days! Tonight I see they are already almost 2 inches tall!!! Have you ever???
This is a more general question I do have several types of cucumbers in peat pots ready to plant outside how ever many of the leaves on the starts are turning yellow. What's up with that? Also over the last season and in my winter garden everything is very tough when harvested, radishes, kale, and other leafy greens, are not moist and crisp? I live in Sacramento California. do you have any suggestions? Thank you
Hi David, early yellowing is likely too much watering. Strips the soil of nutrients. Tough and woody harvests are often veggies that were either left too long, or didn't have the right conditions to grow fast enough (heat, sun, nutrients, water)...
I would like to get some cucumber seeds that are mini in size the ones. These are the ones that sell @ grocery stores. These are approx.3-4 " they are a plastic bag @ grocery stores. Some are almost seedless. I tried to plant what looked like seeds from these cucumbers but had no luck. I live in Louisiana which have very warm weather in spring & summer.
Part 2 of the Cucumber Series is up! Here, we take those germinated plugs after their first true leaves emerge and set them up in 4-inch standard nursery pots for both sale and final transition into the spring garden/greenhouse. th-cam.com/video/EwFVJ79fPA8/w-d-xo.html
How is it going for you now? I wouldn’t give up although I have many times. Sometimes it take a lot of trial and error before you find a handful of things you can grow consistently well. Don’t give up!

What a great dad ur so lucky to have parents that know how to do this!😊
I direct plant in Cleveland and they do well
I do both. Start some indoors and start some outdoors. Same 50/50 survival rate

Finally a fruit i like i can grow in arizona!
I direct seed way up here in Yorkton Saskatchewan, and I get awesome results.
Do you use seeds or you buy small plant of vegetables and plant in your backyard

We direct sow, but are VERY careful about checking the time to harvest. Maybe we should try starting indoor s this year!

@@TheRipeTomatoFarms I don't necessarily have room today but it's a great tip I think I'll start them in a few weeks thanks

Where do you find those high top domes you put ever the cucumber seeds to germinate? I cannot find them.
Does the germination period need special lighting?
😳😳😳

Valerie Sanchez hello ther, let’s be friend
I do not have the potting trays but 😅 i am going to try and pot them in an egg carton ....
Can I sow a fresh seed I collected from cucumber or I have let it dry first?
Hi, do you completely shut or partially vent the plastic cover humidity domes?
I don't nickka.....they don't really make a perfect seal. Once you see true leaves, the domes should come off anyways.
@@TheRipeTomatoFarms thank you

I'll be sowing cucumbers on March 20, i didn't have any growing last year as I made a fatal mistake last year
Awesome, best of luck!!
Which grow light did you use?
Hey there, I am currently using simply 6500K CFL bulbs..about 2 per sq foot of growing area. Cheers.

I took mine out today and put them in bigger pots and they immediately wilted within like an hour. I had added lots of water too.
Can I directly plant the seeds in the ground without the transplanting phase?
Yup. If you're season is long enough and warm enough you sure can. Here in Canada, it is not. So we get a head start by sowing them indoors early.
If I accidentally planted two seeds in each box, should I just kill one if I have two sprouts (Before transplanting)?
I'm wondering the same thing 😮
Nice
Thanks Shah, thank you for watching.
