  • 1967......#36 U.S. Billboard Hot 100
Original video edited and remastered with HQ stereo sound. Mono-to-Stereo conversion.
"Pushin' Too Hard", originally titled "You're Pushing Too Hard", is a song by American rock group The Seeds, written by vocalist Sky Saxon and produced by Saxon with Marcus Tybalt. It was released as a single in 1965, re-issued the following year, and peaked at number 36 on the Hot 100 in February 1967 and number 44 in Canada in March.
The song became the signature tune for the group and a template for their musical style - so much so that Creem magazine later wrote, not disapprovingly, that "the Seeds, of course, managed to work 'Pushin' Too Hard' into every song they ever did." It was included on the influential Nuggets compilation in the 1970s, and earned a reputation as a protopunk garage rock classic. The song is featured in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's exhibit showcasing "The 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll". The Seeds performed "Pushin' Too Hard" during a 1968 episode of the television sitcom The Mothers-in-Law. Saxon revisited the song on his 2008 solo album The King of Garage Rock.
The Seeds released "You're Pushing Too Hard" as a single in November 1965. Though the song did not chart initially, a Los Angeles disc jockey began playing it extensively following the release of the band's self-titled debut album in April 1966. With the title having been changed to "Pushin' Too Hard", a new single was issued in November and the song debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 chart a month later. It peaked at number 36 in February and spent 11 weeks on the chart.
Some radio stations banned the song, believing that the title dealt with being a pusher of illegal drugs. WLS apparently disagreed, because the record reached number one in its tenth week on the playlist of the Silver Dollar Survey on 17 February 1967, and so did rival station WCFL, where the record reached number two on the Sound Ten Survey on 9 February 1967.

I heard he had a little too much acid at one point which is how he ended up with the Yahowha group, is that true? He's listed as one of rock and rolls "acid casualties" by many but if that were so, it was temporary for him. Although he probably was profoundly changed by LSD.
Songs like Pictures and Designs and the freakout at the end, nothing and nobody was creating sounds like that and nobody could imitate his vocals. Your Uncle is the Godfather of punk rock. That picture of them in 1966 on Wikipedia where he's got the long hair and square shades is so cool.

We also called a person that went completely nuts, a persons who freaked out. We glorified insanity. You actually wanted to be called a freak. You wanted to let your freak flag fly high. This is such a weird sounding song if you really think about it. The time register is very quirky. It chugs along with what can almost be described as a reggae beat. The strange wailing backing vocals in the chorus. That very unique guitar solo. I've never seen anyone play guitar that way. He's almost doing it underhanded. Catchy as hell but just a very oddly played and weird sounding song.

Pretty good attempt at a DES reboot of a song that wasn't recorded in true stereo in 1965. The song is definitely not about drugs, It's a threatening warning to a cheating girlfriend to not push her boyfriend around too hard to make him lose his temper. There's a very Rolling Stones-like vibe about the song. Some think the song's lyrics are misogynystic, sort of like "Under My Thumb" or "Play With Fire."

I heard this song on LA radio at the time. It was a rough and simple underground garage rock song. Not a big time & big money pop product. It was a rebellious and angry teen statement in the LA 1960’s context of teens starting to protest against all authority (police, the army, family, the law, etc.) “pushing too hard” on them. See the 1966 Sunset Strip Riot…

    • @robertorick6383
      @robertorick6383 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@michaelleipsitz5766 I agree, though in this case, it's a song about an angry teenaged male threatening his pushy girlfriend for cheating and running around with other guys. The Young Rascal's "You Better Run " is in the same category. There's nothing in the lyrics about a police riot. That would be The Standells "Riot On Sunset Strip" that would describe that category. The Buffalo Springfield's "For What It's Worth" was also based on a police riot on a teenaged music nightclub on Sunset Strip, and Stephen Still's reaction to it.

Sky Saxon was 28 years old in 1965 and was brought up in a Mormon household. I think the song is Sky's way of venting about his overprotective parents who always told him what to do and didn't support the fact that he wanted to be a musician. Then he meets a girl who wanted to rush into marriage, he didn't feel the same way, and she got back at him by cheating on him. Like his parents, she was pushing too hard to change him. She couldn't accept him for who he was either. He simply wanted to be free to have fun and live his life the way he wanted. I don't think it's political at all. I don't think he cared about that at the time. And, most of all, the last person in the world I would compare him to is Mick Jagger. Are you kidding me? Sky Saxon is truly unique, original and misunderstood. He got a bad rap being compared to Mick Jagger. Add it to the list.

    • @robertorick6383
      @robertorick6383 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@rachel112263 No, Sky Saxon, born Richard Marsh was not Mick Jagger or Keith Richards, nor was he ever intended to be. Sky actually made some pre-Seeds discs in the early 60's under the names of Dickie Marsh or Ritchie Marsh. These were typical early 60's teen idol discs, and are now in demand for collectors that are into The Seeds or Sky Saxon. These early discs were only regionally successful, and it took the British Invasion of 1964 to turn young Ritchie/Dickie Marsh around into renaming himself Sky Saxon in 1965. Some listeners (or detractors) not knowing the difference between Mick Jagger or Sky Saxon confused the two, and songs like "Pushin' Too Hard" had an attitude to them (so did "Excuse Excuse" and "Nobody Spoil My Fun') that DJ's loved to lump together with the other garage bands across the US at the time that were inspired by The Beatles and The Stones that made the confusion more misunderstood by squares that disliked Rock & Roll and garage bands in general. I apologize for the connection, but that is how many rock & roll haters saw it (narrow minded as it was) at the time. Other big-lipped singers like Tim Curry, David Johansen, Bob Geldof, and Iggy Pop among others were confused with Mick or Keith. It was just a misunderstood conception among the ignorant. This is why and how an older TV personality like Desi Arnaz managed to get The Seeds on a TV sitcom show like "The Mothers In Laws" for national exposure, since an aging actor like Arnaz did dig them (after all, his son, Desi Arnaz Jr. was in a teen rock band in the mid-60's with Dean Martin's son and Billy Hinsche, whose sister was married to Carl Wilson of The Beach Boys. Desi Sr. may have been 50 years old at the time, but he understood Rock & Roll music.) Ironically, by the time the Seeds did that TV show, they stopped having chart records on Billboard's charts.

🌈 Jah Bless 🌈 The term "Punk rock" was first used to describe bands like the Seeds and the Standells at least a decade before the Ramones or the Sex Pistols ever existed

Sky was born Richard Marsh in 1937, making him about 29 years old when he filmed this. He started his career issuing teen oriented recordings that were local sellers under the names "Dickie Marsh" or "Richie Marsh". In late 1964, he became Sky Saxon when he started taking drugs, particularly LSD.

You're pushin' too hard. A-pushin' on me.
You're pushin' too hard. A-what you want me to be?

You're pushin' too hard, about the things you say.
You're pushin' too hard, every night and day.

    You're pushin' too hard.
Pushin' too hard on me. Too hard.

Well, all I want is to just be free,
And live my life the way I wanna be.

All I want is to just have fun,
And live my life like it's just begun.

    But, you're pushin' too hard.
Pushin' too hard on me. Too hard.

Come here! Better listen, Girl, to what I'm tellin' you.
You better listen, Girl, or we are through.

You better stop all your foolin' around.
Stop your runnin' all over town.

    'Cause you're pushin' too hard.
Pushin' too hard on me. Too hard.

But, I know there's lotta fish in the sea.
I know some would a-stay by me.

So, if you don't think I'm gonna try,
You better ask yourself the reason why.

    'Cause you're pushin' too hard.
Pushin' too hard on me. Too hard.

Pushin' too hard. Pushin' too hard. Pushin' too hard.
Pushin' too hard on me. Too hard.

Pushin' too hard. Pushin' too hard. Pushin' too hard.
Pushin' too hard on me. Too hard.
