    Hi Brian! You should try the cheesy jambalaya. We make it with the fried smoked sausage too. But after the sausage is done just drain the grease then add the rice mix into the same pan and cook them together. It’s really good. We make sweet corn muffins to eat with it. 😊

    Jambalaya is from the African "jambon" meaning ham and "yaya" meaning rice, the French "a 'la" means with, so you end up with Jambon a la yaya, or Jambalaya if you say it fast. There's more than one festival in south Louisiana devoted to this unique food. Thanks Brian.

    You were smart to move your van a bit. Better to be safe, not sorry. I never thought of making a jambalaya in a pressure cooker. I am a vegan but I could make this with Smart sausage. You gave me a good idea for a tasty meal when I finally get a van and will get to travel. Stay safe, my friend. I look forward to meeting you someday.

    • @raysills
      @raysills 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Seniors, like me, need to check box meals like that for salt (sodium) content. Many... if not most box meals, have a ton of salt. They may taste good, but they are often horrid for nutrition, and dangerous to those with hypertension. READ THOSE LABELS. I bet you could make your own Jambalya by adding spices to plain rice. And control the salt content.

    • @AdventureVanMan
      @AdventureVanMan  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Ray Sills You could always just get a lot of daily physical exercise. Most doctors don't tell you this so you have to buy their drugs. 👍✌

    • @raysills
      @raysills 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Brian: I can't say I do a LOT of exercise, but I do take daily walks with my dog. I do take a medication, but it's not expensive. I still think there is much to much salt in a lot of foods. A good thing that I've seen in your videos, is that you use a lot of fresh ingredients. And, it all looks very tasty. :)

    Zatarains is really good. Try their red beans & rice. You can also slow cook it in a thermos if you add boiling water and close it up. Couple hours later you have a hot thermos full of rice and beans. Meal on the road, and easy clean up. I cut the water by 1/4 and add a can of Rotel.

      joe b Yep, I agree if you're in your kitchen at home but ... in a van, using a pressure cooker and browning the sausage? Hats off to him! I thought this was great but was disappointed, especially on jambalaya, that he didn't heat it up with his favorite hot sauce!! That would have made the perfect commercial! ♡

      I was out in some of those states earlier this year and the wind is atrocious. It blows all the time. Driving in to wind is so hard on the gas mileage. I was on the road for two months and mom got sick so me being the only really free one got self elected to care for her until we work out some detail. I am thinking spring I can get back out on the road.

We are in the Reno NV area right now, heading to Washington in a few days, then will make our way down the coast. Will you be going to the RTR in January? Would love to meet you and say hello. We've been conditioned to believe we need a lot of stuff. I'm impressed with what you do with, what appears to be, one cast iron pan. The Jambalaya looked delicious but the peace and quiet, no people, no traffic lights, are as compelling as always. It was great seeing the shadow of the van and the amazing shower rig on the roof reflecting from the road while you were driving. I wish there was more BLM land in the east. I checked and it's sort of scattered and sparse, however, it's probably more realistic to be a "partially campground and part BLM land" van dweller if one can afford the camp ground fees; maybe good for those collecting a decent social security check. But, then you've got a campground full of people and noise and all the things that nomads want to escape. The RTR is coming up; I wonder if you are making your way there. There are strict rules in place this time to discourage folks who think it's a big, drunken party. Thankful to know that. The appeal of this lifestyle is certainly not about meeting up with drunk, obnoxious party animals! Well, thank you again for posting and sharing your adventure. It's an exceptional person who can go off-grid and really follow their dream. Peace out.
