  • www.crosstraini... Our Dunlop D606 review! Is this road legal knobby any good for dirt bikes? You have an enduro motorbike but you ride on roads out to the tracks. Welcome to Cross Training Enduro. So you want a knobby that will behave on the road and not wear out too quickly. Need hard enduro training? Work through our video lists.Or maybe you have modified an enduro motorbike for dual sport riding. In either case, viewers have often asked me "Is the Dunlop D606 is a good choice for road and dirt riding?" Years ago? Yes. Nowadays? Hard enduro techniques are covered in our training vids. There could be better options out there? A quick bit of history. I used the Dunlop D606 knobbies for years. I used to ride on the roads with my XR400, KLX650 and TE610 for an hour on to the tracks. And later on I adapted a WR450F and a Husaberg FE570 as lightweight adventure motorbikes. In all these cases, the Dunlop D606 did work well, if I accepted the inevitable compromises. But today we have such a wide range of tyres that many riders will probably find better options than this Dunlop D606 review. And frankly the D606 front is probably worth avoiding. More on that later. Dunlop claims the D606 is for 10% road riding and 90% off-road riding. Into enduro and dirt bikes? Check out our dirt bike videos. We would put the balance as 20% and 80%. We always found the D606 worked quite well on road surfaces. As usual, we have read dozens of owner reports about the D606 and we found some riders claimed the front tyre has very poor grip for road riding but we never encountered that. Wet roads? No problems but then we never push hard on wet roads. Road noise is what you would expect - pretty loud. Extreme enduro training vids are our focus. High tyre pressure reduces the noise slightly, but you will want earplugs on the highway! Off-road performance? There are definitely compromises compared to an enduro knobby. The less aggressive tread pattern won't be so good in mud and soft sand. The rubber compound is very hard so there tends to be less grip in slippery terrain. The tyre carcass is quite stiff so you need to run very low air pressures to get a decent footprint on the ground. Anyone into hard enduro will hate it. But for everyday dirt riding you may find the compromises are okay given the D606 has good road manners. The Dunlop D606 front tyre is not good though. Our dirt riding tips are great for developing your hard enduro skills. If you want extreme enduro training see our playlists of enduro skills to learn. It can feel quite sketchy off-road. And it tends to wear unevenly with road riding. A lot of adventure riders choose the Pirelli MT21 front knobby instead.Longevity of the front D606? Usually you can expect to use one front tyre to every two rear tyres. But due to uneven wear you may find the front D606 only lasts about 50% longer than the rear. Try our training vids for working on your extreme enduro techniques. The only way to get more life is choose the Pirelli MT21, avoid aggressive road cornering, and use high air pressures when road riding. Possibly the best option for the front tyre is simply to run with your favourite off-road knobby. If you aren't cornering or braking agressively on bitumen then front knobbies don't wear out quickly - assuming you have a light enduro motorbike. What else? There's the Mitas E09, Continental TKC80, Kenda Big Block, Metzeler Karoo, and Kenda Trackmaster 2 for starters. And of course the Tusk Dsport in north America. Do you have other suggestions for road-legal knobbies? As the motorbike's weight climbs above 136kg (200lb) you can get uneven wear using aggressive front knobbies for road riding. And the flexing knobs can be quite scary with aggressive cornering or braking. Similar budget tyres to the Dunlop D606? We already mentioned the Pirelli MT21. In the USA there is the Tusk Dsport which is extremely similar to the D606 in all respects but almost half the price.You lucky bastards. All the reviews indicate it's on par with the Dunlop knobbies so it appears to be a bargain. If anyone had trouble with the Tusk Dsport let us know in the comments. I started this review by asking if the Dunlop D606 was still a good choice for dirt riders who will be riding on the road as well. In the old days? Sure. But nowadays there's a wider range of knobbies designed to handle the road as well. For example, the Motoz Tractionator Desert which is rated 85% off-road and 15% road.The tour operator said they get really good mileage despite a fair bit of highway riding, and good traction in soft sand and dirt too. The Michelin Desert Race tyres. Bloody expensive but the same tyres are used by the KTM team at Dakar.

    A similar version appeared on our adventure channel last year. A lot of viewers are only subscribed to the one channel so we are doing enduro and adventure versions of some videos.... but spacing them well apart!
    It's easy to get way too hung up on knobby choice instead of working on something way more important - your riding skills! See our very general guide to rubber here: th-cam.com/video/HJfyU6iTjA0/w-d-xo.html
    TUSK DSPORT? We read dozens of opinions and think it's safe to say most riders find them very similar to D606 but just half the price. But it's interesting to see the wide range of conflicting opinions and rates of wear. Check out this thread: www.thumpertalk.com/forums/topic/1309638-tusk-dual-sport-tires-any-good/
    MOST AGGRESSIVE BUT LONGER LASTING? Our choice would be the Motoz Tractionator Desert HT if the price is right in your country. We did a whole week of outback riding on these. Great offroad grip although the very hard rubber compound won't be great on very slippery stuff. They don't wear fast on the highway. Worth trying. motoz.com.au/product/tractionator-desert-ht/

    I've used the Michelin Tracker for a few years now. Find them very good on and off road. Used for a couple of trans euro trips 1500 miles ish. And wear really well still using the one i put on in September 24 for my last trip and still worked well in Valleys Lite race in January.

    Front tire for serious off-road riders: Michelin Enduro Medium (they have a Medium 2 now which is even better). Of course on road be careful but the grip off road of that front is unmatched. They also have a Michelin Enduro Hard for desert riding but I found that the grip is not the same. Like you said front does not wear fast in general so go Michelin Enduro Medium 2. It is arguably the best front tire for off-road (mud, sand, rocks...etc)

    I’m not a hardcore offroad rider but I’ve had pretty good success and confidence riding the Dunlop EN91 Geomax tires. Good longevity (I have to ride about 50 kilometres each way to trails) at over 3,000 kilometres and about 60% treadlife remaining. They’re pretty cheap (comparable to the D606), offer good traction in rock/gravel/dirt, and ride pretty comfortably at highway speed. The 140 size fits where a normal 120 rear would (odd sizing but it works).

    I originally had a D606 rear on my WR250R and it lasted around 5000km with highway and dirt use. I'm using Metzler MC360 mid/hard front and rear currently, getting good mileage for road/ dirt use as well.

    My favorite on the plated XR650R was the Motoz extreme hybrid rear with the Mt21 front. Hooked up great everywhere. Also ran the 606’s and when brand new were great in the dirt but they’re so hard and stiff the traction only lasted a little while.

    Over here in Greece I use dunlop D952 ,they are not available in every size(as Dunlop want to press you to buy the more expensive D606)
    Review 952-noisy(ish) on road ,lasts well,fine on road but no 120km/h corners!
    Great off road,stiff side wall,i deflate to 15psi and the one time i got a flat,rode 6km no problems.lots of riders have the same experience .
    And the cost-240e a pair of D606
    150E a pair of D952

    Just ordered another 606 rear tyre for the DRZ. Tried a few less aggressive offroad tyres, but the 606 is a good, honest off (and on!) road performer. Nothing is perfect, but they're pretty close 👍

    I’m glad someone with the following is finally saying that the old 606 is outdated.
    It gets monotonous seeing the MT 21 and 606 constantly recommended by old guys who have never bothered trying to run anything else. It’s not that good of a combo by modern standards, and it’s not like they’re cheap.

    I've tried a few tyres now including mt21, d606, motoz enduro IT, motoz enduro 6, maxxis desert IT, pereli rallycross, shinko 525, over 36000kms on a crf450L with heaps of street riding to single track, fire roads, mud, sand, dirt, rocks etc, and to me the best compromise of on road/offroad grip and longevity is the motoz enduro IT, getting about 2500kms, good road manners and grip, a bit noisy but I haven't come across a better alround trye set up. Going to try the dunlop en91s next and see how they go

  • @metalwheelz
    @metalwheelz 6 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

    I always ended up going to the Perelli DOT trials tire (MT43). No need to ever re-cut knobs and it rode every off-road condition fairly well with the exception of deep mud. On the road it felt reasonably tame, but you do have to watch your aggressive cornering as it would break loose a little early because of the squarer profile.

  • @RGB872

    The knock on the d-sport is the same as the d606, the front wears quickly. The rear, however, wears longer but has slightly less road manners than the 606 in my experience. As already posted, the Scorpion Rally front makes a great pairing with either the 606 or Tusk.

    • @adamniswonger8015
      @adamniswonger8015 6 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

      The d sport has such poor traction on the road, it really falls behind the 606. I can very easily engage the abs after switching to them. They’ll be off as soon as I can stomach wrestling them again as they’re extremely stiff.

    @aidangillett5396 5 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

    My biggest 'secret' was to avoid using the front brake on tarmac whenever possible. Makes such a massive difference to tyre life that you can run the most aggressive one you can find and its not worth buggering about with dual sport tyres, unless you like to rail twisty roads at speed. If you're just commuting it will easily double the lifespan of the tyre
    For the rear, the Pirelli MT43 - whilst not a knobby at all - is the best dual purpose tyre i've used. Not suitable at all for those who like to slide, but it's very quiet and well behaved on the road, and in anything other than sand or mud it has such utterly ridiculous levels of grip that it hands down flogs every other knobby on the market and retains the grip until the tread is completely gone. Key is to run it at no higher than 8psi (yes even on highway), any more and it will wear significantly faster

    Kenda K760 Trakmaster 2 rear and Motoz Tractionator 90/100-21 Desert H/T front is still by far the best combo I've found. I prioritize dirt but i still do highway speeds when on the highway and i get about 3-3500km out of a pair. ( I tried the desert H/T rear as well but only got half the km out of it for not any better, at least that i could notice, off-road performance)

      Not for me, I ran the D606 rear and MT21 front for the 2023 season (2023 KTM350 EXCF), then the EN91 front and rear for the 2024 season in eastern Canada. I was riding once a week with about a 2 hour pavement ride at 90kph (55mph) with about a 3 hour singletrack ride in soft dirt, mud and every single root in the world.
      For me the EN91's got about 95% of the longevity with noticably more grip, for about 75% of the cost. Remember, the D606 is ancient and progress is getting faster.

I still think the D606 rear MT21 front is as viable as ever. I run those on my DR650. I run the Trackmaster II's on my DRZ 400. Motoz options seem worthwhile. I remember the first time I tried a D606 rear it felt like the perfect blend of everything and, yes, aside from lots of mud.... but then you've got to have an off road knobby.

    Ive tried one of the Tusk Waypoint rears on my 690, and with a fair bit of flattracking and hooliganism on dirt, and 70 mph cruising on road, Im still gonna get 4000 miles out of it. A record for me with a knobby. Cant even tell its a knobby on road, not much. Not the most aggressive tire obviously on dirt, but hey its a dualsport bike and gets ridden everywhere. Id buy another.
    The Tusk copy of a 606 I tried on the front, is for sure worse on road than a 606, it wanders, it makes more noise, not confidence inspiring.
    But is pretty good on dirt. 606 rears on my DR650, were slicks at 2000 miles, they just dont last long. And now they are Expensive!

    MotOz Enduro S/T and I/T - 130/90 rear and the 90/100 front is my absolute favorite combination for a dirt-focused bike that's still just cheeky enough to be road legal with DOT approval. They don't last long off road and will wear even faster on pavement - especially rears on my T7, but that's mostly on me having being heavy on the throttle because I like angry parallel twin noises lmao - but I don't care what they cost or how long they last because they just work.
    The RallZ front/rear is my favorite setup for a bike used as a true 50-50 'dual sport' that gives up a tiny bit of wet / sloppy dirt performance for a little more longevity and pavement manners.

    I am riding KLX300. I Also chose the D606 / MT21. For small dual sports, they work well over varying terrains. If you know you will be in sand, a specific sand tire may be better. Or on pavement or in Mud ect. But the D606/MT21 do well over changing terrains, and they don't just melt on pavement. A dual sport bike is a compromise, the tire is too. Having said THAT- a Tusk Dsport or TCK80 may work better on a KLR or, DR650. Motoz Rallz may work great on a KTM 690, not so well on a KTM 990. Weight, HP, lug pattern, and wheel profile changes tires perceived performance from one bike to the next. For small dual sports, the D606/MT21 is a pretty good place to start over varying, changing terrains.

      I want to try the enduro mediums next, the old MT21 + D606 are way worse than the new EN91 for my riding (50/50 on/off road on a KTM350 EXCF) but I always want more.

    Motoz desert HT sux on wet tar, great off road but just too sketchy on wet black top. My go to for a DR650 is the D606 on the rear and Pirelli Scorpion Rally Race on the front.

    Fun fact,
    In Qld you can run any knobbie as long as it is the correct speed and load rating applicable to your bike.
    'Not for highway use' etc stamped on the tyre means nothing in Qld.
    The same as DOT approved.
    Another fun fact, the Goldentyre GT280 sand paddle was DOT approved......even in 14" 😂

      @crosstrainingenduro  3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      That's my understanding too. But it's weird that I have had mechanics doing RWC saying the knobby must be DOT approved. Misinformed? Or just trying to sell you new knobbies?

    Mitas Terra Force EX MH Super Light Tires front and back on a Beta 390 rrs. Tires are loud on the road, but good in the trails, even when it's muddy. I go about 60mph on asphalt but I don't go above 50mph on concrete, the front tire wants to go everywhere on concrete.

      @@keithturner5769 I had Metzeler MC360 mid and hard, at last I use Michelin Tracker on my XT 600/153kg. Better Traction dry/wet, better Control (front wheel control is very well).
      Certainly: Fast cornering with an MX front tyre is poor. But the control I have with the TRACKER is great.

    Been using Mt21 Front and rear on My CRF 250L. for past 4 years (due to COVID did not get many miles out of it for a year) been very happy, when i bought them not sure what happened to Dunlop prices in Europe that year, but Rear D606 would cost me 160+EUR, and i bought a set of Front/Rear Mt21 for 155 EUR (running 130/80/18 in the back normal 90/90/21 front). currently most of my friends run Metzeler MC360, been thinking of switching to those as well just to try something new, in the same price range as MT21 at least where i live :)

    I can do 85 mph on a Dunlop rear and MT-21 front no problem on the highways (wr250r). They also handle hard-pack, rocky trails well. They are absolutely horrid in the mud and loose sand.

    Tractionator desert h/t is the worst tire for wet conditions fyi. The S/T version is much more suited for wet conditions for those in wet areas.
    With my KLX300 I'm shinko 216 on the front and d606 on the rear. Works well for my light bike.
    Another good tire for the price is the AMS Bite. Harder compound than the track master and very predictable.

    The Tusk d sport chunks lugs badly. I gladly pay for the d606. When I get 6k out of it, it's still a bargain even at twice the price. I just can't find any shortcomings on this tire, why mess with perfection?

    What makes a full knobby unroadworthy in Australia?

    • @crosstrainingenduro
      @crosstrainingenduro  6 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      A lot of guys say the 'Not for highway use' makes them non-roadworthy. But that's for the USA's DOT standards and other guys say Aussie laws make no mention of what is and isn't okay for road.

    • @behan1969
      @behan1969 6 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      ADR only requires that the tyre has a min 1.5 mm tread across the area that contacts the road. No DoT or not for highway use for Australia. You can run what you want.

    • @crosstrainingenduro
      @crosstrainingenduro  5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      It's weird because many Aussies have their tyres knocked back in RWCs for that reason... I figure there's either some obscure rule that nobody can find, or its an urban myth that half the RWC guys believe in.

    Michelin TRACKER! For my opinion best mix of different worlds.
    On my XT600 since 2020. 60% Road. (noisy, longlife, cold & wet traction onroad really good for this kind of road legal MX tyres)
    On my EXC 300 too since 2021. Not the same traction like an Supersoft blablabla, but I know. If I can't climb it up, 80% it's my fault. And this now 4 year old tyre I will use 2 years longer, I guess. (99,9% Offroad)
    Disadvantage: Expensive.
