Its usually much better to let the heat sink do the spreading so there arent any air bubbles in the thermal paste unless its an exposed die like a GPU. Also, it does not make any difference to thermals if too much paste is put on (Gamers Nexus). A 4-5mm blob in the middle is usually fine for most normal IHS sizes.
For cutting sockets I use a saw that is sort of like an exacto knife handle with a saw blade in place of the knife, I thinks it's made by Tamiya but I'm sure there are knockoffs on amazon. I discovered it for 3d printing post processing and it's well worth it's cost for several of my 'hobbies'.
If you're considering upgrading one of these generations of server, try to make sure that you purchase the X56xx series of processor for the additional virtualization instruction sets that it supports, particularly if you want to run ESXi 6.7 on it, as the E55xx and X55xx series aren't supported. Best of luck to those looking to upgrade these old beasties. Also, as long as you aren't overclocking the crap out of it and you're using non-conductive thermal paste, then the thermal past application is honestly not that critical. Just make sure you've got enough that it'll spread to cover the die and you're golden. Use more than you think you'll need if you're concerned. The extra will just get squeezed out and it should generally be fine, as long as you don't empty a tube on each one.
I was hoping for X5695's but settles for the cheaper X5650's in the end. Seem solid enough, there's no real plan for this server and for the time being I've just left Windows Server 2016 installed with Hyper-V enabled. In terms of thermal-paste, Arctic MX4 has always been one of my go-to's for it. Seems to do the job well on CPU's, GPU's and all sorts that needs it.

I picked up a 360 G6 for free a while back and got an R610 at about 35 quid but I really want a faulty/supercheap one to work on and experiment with. Those two servers just went straight to rack, one with pfsense and one with ESXi
eBay can be a gold mine sometimes! Other places I typically check is local FaceBook Marketplace adverts, tends to be some good local pick-ups from time to time. PFSense is also great, I run it myself virtualised under Hyper-V to link my 40/56Gbps network to my primary gigabit network, makes routing, vpn's and NAT rules a whole lot simpler with enough control. DL360 G6's are great however I've always aimed for the G7's where possible as they feature the newer ILO's which don't need ancient versions of Internet Explorer to access.

@@woodant1981 aha don't get me started on the IE warnings, java and all sorts. The network uses a Mellanox SX1036 (36 port QSFP) switch in Ethernet mode. All the hypervisors have Mellanox ConnectX3 Pro's to get the full speed out of them. Moving VM's in clusters can easily suck up to 35gbps! Keeps things running nice and smoothly. There's also some older 40 core servers which are all connected via a QSFP to quad SFP+ to give them 10gbps since QSFP cables can be rather expensive.
Fairly comprable to my NFS server, I think. It is a Dell Precision WorkStation T5500 with two Xeon X5675s (3.07GHz). It is also my video rendering computer. It isn't rack mount, but I like it. It has a cool daughter board that adds support for a second cpu.
I have just done the same thing to the raiser card on the same model of server as part of making a an old X3650 M3 become my main PC. Paid a bit more for mine than you did for the server though. Biggest problem has been making it quieter. Currently waiting for some GPU power cables so I can mount a GeForce GTX 970 into the slot. Currently testing with a GeForce 9500 GT as it gets it power from the PCIe slot and doesn't need additional power.
If I remember right the way these servers control the fans is based on the ambient temperature and the temperature of the CPU's. Typically where my servers are located hangs around 0C-15C so they tend to stay a bit quieter than if they were inside a house. You may be able to get some resistors on the fans to slow them down a bit, however I've heard stories online where this causes them all to run at full blast as the IMM thinks they're spinning too slow. Might be worth a shot, just a thought. :)
@@CobsTech I just swapped them out for quieter fans, and disabled the PWM on one of the fans and then it runs full tilt and the IMM is happy that it is still getting the RPM signal and as both fans are wired to the same PWM that keeps the IMM happy enough. Thanks for the suggestion though. I am still in the process of modifying things and getting things right before I move into the server full time.
I know this is a older video now but i also had a APC UPS that Took a Really Hard Surge & it Blowed its Guts out ..The Voltage Regulators Was Smoked and Even the aluminum heatsinks was melted slightly as was some caps and chokes ..i mean it took a Major Kick to the as* & just blew its top..Thank God all the equipment that was plugged into it was fine & so i just Bought 2 More just like it ..APC RM2200RM Smart ups & Just Hope it Dont Happen again ..But To B Fair We did have a major power outage over night & when thy tried to turn it back on 4-5 times it kept trippin their stuf & after the last time thy tried it my stuff said Nope..lol.! thank goodness for UPS'S i say ..i have a 27U Rack full of junk.. Costly but still 10gb switch 4u 2u 1u and a 3u server all but 2 have dual Xeons.. as a mater of fact my oldest has a pair of X5675's that runs secondary Unraid tasks
my server was a free find but the one thing that might upset some is calling anime stuff weeb crap but im not even done with the server yet as one of the biggest upgrades i cant yet afford is converting it from non redundant to a redundant PSU's kits are sold on ebay
ahaha, the weeb thing was a joke. Converting the non-redundant psu's to redundant can be expensive. Usually it's the carraidges that are the expensive parts, the actual PSU's that slide in can usually be found on the cheap (£15-20) depending on your model.

Server ECC memory is usually cheaper than normal non-ecc memory because it is very abundant
