As a student of theology I just started reading the Quran recently. I'd say it's one of the most amazing books I've ever come across in my life. I truely regret why not reading it before. The most fascinating thing about the book is that it's the same book at least for the last 1430 years. Not a single word has changed while that's not the case with the other religious books like Torah, New Testament, Vedas and Buddhist scriptures etc. It never lets your attention go away from the subject. Keeps repeating the topics again and again to stress and emphasize. No lenghty historical stories. Short and simple. I wish I knew Arabic so I could understand it better.

what is our behavior is to it.
and what should we behave with the it. For this use Quran thoughts.
you will find we have to surrender.
and Islam means surrendering in Arabic. Thanks

i am 31 agnostic (raised catholic) and i started learning arabic so i can read Qur'an in original text for this reason. i believe the sounds and linguistics are significant as the Qur'an was originally spoken aloud as poetry. i also want to discover mathematical mysteries within the linguistic rhetoric similar to ancient jewish texts.

@@olgaismag4422 peace be upon you brother. Here to answer your questions :
1- Allah says, “I have not created men except that they should serve Me” (Quran, 51:56).
“And to Allah belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth, and Allah is over all things competent. Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of the night and the day are signs for those of understanding. Who remember Allah while standing or sitting or [lying] on their sides and give thought to the creation of the heavens and the earth, [saying], “Our Lord, You did not create this aimlessly; exalted are You [above such a thing]; then protect us from the punishment of the Fire..”(Quran 3: 189-191)
2- "Oh humankind! We created you from a single pair of a male and a female, and made you into nations and tribes, so that you may know each other (not that ye may despise each other). Verily the most honored among you in the sight of Allah is the who is the most righteous of you. And Allah has full knowledge and is well acquainted (with all things)" (49:13).
3- For such is the state of the disbelievers], until, when death comes to one of them, he says, “My Lord, send me back that I might do righteousness in that which I left behind (i.e. in that which I neglected).” No! It is only a word he is saying; and behind them is a barrier until the Day they are resurrected. So when the Horn is blown, no relationship will there be among them that Day, nor will they ask about one another. And those whose scales are heavy [with good deeds] - it is they who are the successful. But those whose scales are light - those are the ones who have lost their souls, [being] in Hell, abiding eternally. The Fire will sear their faces, and they therein will have taut smiles (i.e. their lips having been contracted by scorching until the teeth are exposed). (Quran, 23:99-104)
Keep on reading the Quran and in shaa Allah we will find all the answers. 😘

Second. I understood a lot between when i first read the Quran with English translation (arabic isnt my language) and the last time i did. The more you read the more you understand the wiser you become in everyday affair.
A person claiming to have read the Quran and then goes on to litter a street or treat someone inappropriately or be harsh to animals etc has probably partaken of just a ritual not guidance.
Quran is education about life and how to live it.

    The Quran says:
"O you, who have believed, remember God with much remembrance. And exalt him morning and afternoon. It is him who confers blessing upon you, and so do His angels that he may bring you out from the darkness into the light. And ever is he, to the believers, Merciful. Their greeting on the Day they meet him will be, "Peace." And he has prepared for them a noble reward.
O Prophet, indeed We have sent you as a witness and a bringer of good tidings and a warner and to invite to God, by his permission, and as an enlightening luminary. Give good tidings to the believers that they will have from God great bounty. And do not obey the disbelievers and the hypocrites and leave their harm, and rely upon God. And sufficient is God as Disposer of affairs."

Quran do not propagate polygamy! Sura Nisa (4/3) And if you fear that you will not deal justly with the orphan girls, then marry those that please you of [other] women, two or three or four. But if you fear that you will not be just, then [marry only] *one* or those your right hand possesses. That is more suitable that you may not incline [to injustice].

Got it wrong men, you fall into a trap : no matter how, or wich book you follow, the important thing is To love and respect God.
By talking like this, it almost sound like a militant, bent on conquest. It is not the way To follow, and those who tell you this are leading you astray.

Let me tell you guys.is a common seance to understand that what a father and mother cannot finish if child take time he or she can finish it.so Quran and Muhammad is like a child to Judaism and Christianity. Why I say that all does books was struggling to complete and Quran came to fulfil.Nicolas tesla was inventor of electricity but he did not finish but we fulfill it.so that is how nature works.so if one way or another someone claim his prophet that speak to allah or god that we dont see that not make sense.

Allah knows all humans or his servants love gardens not just Arabs& that is the reason Allah mentions gardens. Thus the reason cannot be the Arabia has deserts so Allah rewards the believers with gardens.

When the Qur'an talks about the issue of having up to four wives it's not only about having or not having enough to support them financially but it specifically says, and this is a short translation of the verse in Arabic: "ye may also marry two, three, or four but if you fear that you cannot do JUSTICE (between them) then marry only one". Sur Al Nisa (Chapter of Women) The most accurate interpretation of that is: if you can't get all their consent and be just or fair to each of them in love, support, time, and money then do not marry more than one.

    Mr :Don Simens at 37:23
so much respect for you for what you've said
    ...
But there is a point you missed , (movement of modern history has been nominated by the western only ) not (Christians) cuz if you noticed Christians could NOT become civilized until they given up practicing religion as policy for their countries and while they did that they were stuck at Their era of darkness due to corruption of the church , this is a historical fact try to apply Christianity to your lives -the right way - and you'll notice that you'll become technically Muslims because you'll have to stop eating
.pork, drinking and women will have to cover their heads . it's all mentioned in the Bible
try to practice Christianity only through your fathers and monks (the church) and you'll go back to the era of darkness and corruption
Unlike Islamic history throughout Islamic history the more the Muslims practiced their religion the more civilized they became and the more their religion spreads faster (In India - Pakistan - China - Indonesia - Turkey - Maldives - Egypt -KSA -ARE -Morocco -Jordan ) so many races same practices of religion cuz Islam organizes every single side of your life shows you how to live your life and enjoy it the right way without hurting others ..
I hope all Muslims including me go back to practice our religion correctly to regain the glory we had once

He did explain it like He did explain every single verse of the Quran, from cover to cover , I would love to hear him explain the verse because when the prophet companions ask him how we should strike a woman, He answered very Hard as a rule that they should do
1 first should never ever hit or strike her in the face
2 second shouldn't causes any pain and harm
3 third Shouldn't leave a mark on her body.
They were surprised... saying it's like we should not strike them (women)

First we as Muslims thank you for your good intention and your efforts to help people know the reality about Islam ..
but there are some mistakes you maybe don't read about it in Qura'n and like Atheism Actually Allah address them and said "How do you deny Allah and you were dead and He gave you life? Again He will cause you to die and again bring you to life; then you shall be brought back to Him." he address the Atheists who deny Allah except Atheist of course not "MUSRIK" who the other worships or take partners with ALLAH . other Verse "Were they created of nothing, or were they themselves the creators?".
    other Verse
(7:180) And to Allah belong the best names, so invoke Him by them. And leave [the company of] those who practice deviation concerning His names. They will be recompensed for what they have been doing.
and about Wives of Prophet like the Muslim guy said they are the Mothers of Muslims and every one of them their marriage for a reason .

      Hello Brother Solomon Duncan;
      - I agree Jesus it is great prophets like all prophets.
      - I agree Jesus god gave him Miracles like raised person from the death.
      BUT :
      - I disagree about your claim " Allah did not Mohamed did not " :) ... WHY !!
      ANSWER :
      Chapter 3 verse 49 :
" A messenger to the Children of Israel: "I have come to you with a sign from your Lord. I make for you out of clay the figure of a bird; then I breathe into it, and it becomes a bird by God’s leave. And I heal the blind and the leprous, and I revive the dead, by God’s leave. And I inform you concerning what you eat, and what you store in your homes. In that is a sign for you, if you are believers.""
FOCUS : "" and I revive the dead, by God’s leave. "" ... "" BY GOD'S LEAVE "" it's mean with permission of god and this not " surprising " because it is GOD who gave him this Miracle. So, Jesus without God he can't do any Miracles :).
      ----
Now about prophet Muhammad ( god bless him & grant ) :
      - You should understand each prophet god gave him his own Miracles and in Islam there is no distinction between all prophets.
      Chapter 2 verse 136 :
" Say, “We believe in God; and in what was revealed to us; and in what was revealed to Abraham, and Ishmael, and Isaac, and Jacob, and the Patriarchs; and in what was given to Moses and Jesus; and in what was given to the prophets-from their Lord. We make no distinction between any of them, and to Him we surrender.”
      All Respect
      Thank You

Dear respected Mrs. Myers, dear respected Professor Mills!
First of all thanx a lot for this enlightening and clearing discussion, as a muslim i got tears in my eyes i swear to God Allmighty, The All-Merciful and All-Forgiving Lord of the universe, for anyone seeking His Forgivness and seeking to finding Him may He Be Exalted and Praised as He Deserves and as we as humans need to praise Him for a happy life.
Two points Professor i want to comment on as i went through a journey, being a born muslim but didn't have the knowledge about so many misconceptions and devilish lies being spread by some and taken by the extremists of "our" people and using this and helping the haters of my faith to let seem true what they're lying about Islaam. 9/11 and after that Alqaida and isis, and so on. So i went to a blessed journey of learning and Alhamdulillaah (Thanks to Allaah Thanks to Elo'him) i loved God Almighty even more when i learned the answers on those filthy and evil and mean lies about my faith. the same as i would defend any faith being lied at even if it were a polytheistic faith which as a monotheist is worst thing one could do =associate partners with The Only One Who Created us all and is Nearer to us than we could ever imagine and more Loving and Merciful we could ever imagine (it is us humans who think badly about Him).
Two points my dear and respected Mrs. Myers and dear and respected Professor i would like to correct: (i say this in all respect and humbleness and love as you are Created by Him Allmighty as we all are and i only want everything pure and good for you as i do for my own familymembers i swear to God, we are all from Adam Peace Be upon Him and Adam came from dust)
    The first one is:
you claimed that the Noble Quraan doesnt call "infidels" anyone besides the polytheists Sir, yes in general this is true.
But when a human or prophet like Jesus Peace Be upon Him is being worshipped this is a type of polytheism Sir in our believe in the Quraan:
Those who say, “Allah is one in a Trinity,” have certainly fallen into disbelief. There is only One God. If they do not stop saying this, those who disbelieve among them will be afflicted with a painful punishment.
    - Dr. Mustafa Khattab, the Clear Quran
They have certainly disbelieved who say, "Allah is the third of three."1 And there is no god except one God. And if they do not desist from what they are saying, there will surely afflict the disbelievers among them a painful punishment.
(Surah 5 Verse 73, two different ways of translations)
Those who say, “Allah is the Messiah, son of Mary,” have certainly fallen into disbelief. The Messiah ˹himself˺ said, “O Children of Israel! Worship Allah-my Lord and your Lord.” Whoever associates others with Allah ˹in worship˺ will surely be forbidden Paradise by Allah. Their home will be the Fire. And the wrongdoers will have no helpers.
    - Dr. Mustafa Khattab, the Clear Quran
They have certainly disbelieved who say, "Allah is the Messiah, the son of Mary" while the Messiah has said, "O Children of Israel, worship Allah, my Lord and your Lord." Indeed, he who associates others with Allah - Allah has forbidden him Paradise, and his refuge is the Fire. And there are not for the wrongdoers any helpers.
    - Saheeh International
    5:73

    - Saheeh International
    5:75
The Messiah, son of Mary, was no more than a messenger. ˹Many˺ messengers had ˹come and˺ gone before him. His mother was a woman of truth. They both ate food.1 See how We make the signs clear to them, yet see how they are deluded ˹from the truth˺!
    - Dr. Mustafa Khattab, the Clear Quran
The Messiah, son of Mary, was not but a messenger; [other] messengers have passed on before him. And his mother was a supporter of truth. They both used to eat food.1 Look how We make clear to them the signs; then look how they are deluded.
    - Saheeh International
    5:76
Say, ˹O Prophet,˺ “How can you worship besides Allah those who can neither harm nor benefit you? And Allah ˹alone˺ is the All-Hearing, All-Knowing.”
    - Dr. Mustafa Khattab, the Clear Quran
Say, "Do you worship besides Allah that which holds for you no [power of] harm or benefit while it is Allah who is the Hearing, the Knowing?"
    - Saheeh International
    5:77
Say, “O People of the Book! Do not go to extremes in your faith beyond the truth, nor follow the vain desires of those who went astray before ˹you˺. They misled many and strayed from the Right Way.”
    - Dr. Mustafa Khattab, the Clear Quran
Say, "O People of the Scripture, do not exceed limits in your religion beyond the truth and do not follow the inclinations of a people who had gone astray before and misled many and have strayed from the soundness of the way."
    - Saheeh International
The word infidels is being hijacked Sir by two extremists, the radical extremist muslims and the radical extremist lying haters of Islaaam Professor Mills, it just in itself describes the situation of belief of the human. That means that the one who doesnt believe is a non muslim a non believer in Islaam. I want to ask all in brotherhood and love and all respect and fear for all of us from wrong understanding:
am i as a muslim not an infidel in the way our christian and jewish brothers believe. Of course i am as i understood the Christian doctrine the one who doesnt believe in Christ Peace Be upon Him as Lord and Saviour doesnt enter into Heaven, Jews the same the one who isnt born into a jewish family at least the mother cant be a jew. and only jews will enter Heaven, this is how i understood it Sir. Why is this accepted but when the Muslim claims this we are being treated sometimes the meanest of treatments in the way we are being lied at and misstreated Sir. Isnt this what religion intends, that we have to follow what our Creator expects to enter His Eternal Abode of Peace and Bless and Joy? Isnt this normal on a human basis if i want to go to school and learn sth.i have to do what is being asked of me and i cannot believe or do whatever i like?
Why is this accepted in any faith but Islaam respected Professor Mills, i am an infidel in any faith but Islaam and if a christian or jewish brother calls me, to just describe my situation, an infidel in his religion honestly i'd be more than happy. Because this is what i have to do to be a muslim Sir. (to say my only faith is Islaam and i do not believe in any other faiths.)
What you mentioned is true partly, the exclusivitiy is for all monotheists since our Father Adam Peace Be upon Him.
All the followers of all prophets who followed their essential messages before being changed (this is why God Allmighty Kept on Talking to us and Sending us again and again reminders) are monotheists, are muslims= a muslim is literally the one who submitted.
Means at the time of Moses Peace Be upon Him his deciples and followers are meant that they are Saved. With our Beloved Jesus Peace Be upon Him the same.
God Sent the last message to Prophet Muhammad Peace Be upon Him and Wants every human to believe in him and Promised that the last message wont ever be changed. Many have tried to change since the beginning of Islaam but couldnt. because it is the last message it cant be changed. God Allmighty Revealed the Noble Quran, and this goes to the respected Mrs.Myers as she in the mentioned in the beginning millions try to memorize it, no Madame Millions have memorized it from the first to the last letter and i ask you to go to a mosque where there is a Hafizh (like this we call today the one who memorized the whole Quraan) and test him or her.
This being said Professor Mills, i swear to God if i were near you i would kiss your head as i do with my own father thanking you for talking the truth about especially the "Jihad and fighting verses" thanx a lot Sir. You are helping for a better understanding and a peaceful future for all of humanity and you are helping us muslims fight the two extremist radicals i mentioned. (by the way the sister mentioned the wahhabis i would love to sit with her and teach her about so called wahhabism, very sad a Muslimah as noble and God-loving as she is that she uses those terms of exactly one of the 2 extremist parties)
Thanx a lot Mrs. Myers and Professor Mills from me to you all and i hope my comment isnt taken as an offense or enimosity. Just the picture and the understanding is more complete. and everything good i say is from God Allmighty and anything bad i said is from myself and from the devil.
    Peace🌸🌹

He is not a scholar and has not learned from a scholar, he should not speak like a scholar. If he speaks about Islam and the Quran he should say very clearly: "this is from my own understanding and from what I have gathered, so dont take this to be true because I may be wrong"

    Quite an interesting lecture.
The professor makes a bold and straight step into reading the Quran without any other sources.
I would like to add some colors in regards to the answers he gave.
    - in regards to unbelievers, the word Kafir is what is often used throughout the Quran. It is a composed word with "Kaf" which the palm and "r" to see. It essentially means it is an individual who puts regularly his hand in front of his face and still pretends to see clearly. And it is not really related to what is or believe to be behind the hand. It is the behavior and not the object of belief.
    - Water is fundamental for life, your body is around 60%, the earth surface is about 71% . Water has a mirror effect. It is true that desert people may be more sensitive to its importance. History of earth should help have a better appreciation of its age. The word "jannah" is composed of Ja which is to come, and nah which means something that falls in a receptacle. Any place is empty until some life form falls upon it.
    - When a society builds self pride and forgets its roots it necessarily starts fighting the wrong wars. That is in a nutshell what happened to Islamic societies, that is why Quran is important to read .
    - The Quran deals with Marriage contracts because it is the most important fabric, the fabric of human beings. The same way it deals with inheritance, or usury. It relates to our very existence and perpetuity.

While I appreciate Mr. Wills for his studying Quran and understanding the essence of peacefulness of Islam, would request his listeners to get clarity of various points from renowned scholars of Islam itself. I don't blame him for his comment saying few flaws in Quran but believe his such misunderstanding would be eliminated if he ponders about such facts and consult with scholars with good intention.

Garry Wills: I watched most of your interviews, for sure I really appreciate you for going out of our natural human inclination of claiming what I have is always above everything. Your a Christian, but still you can admit the fact that religions of monotheism began since time immemorial from Prophet Adam to the final/seal of the Prophets Muhammad (s.a.w). May God bless you more and make you a beacon of light for the rest of American Nationals, Ameen..
