Punch vs Palm? pressure test? Simple, vital strikes on specific targets in real defense. The shoulder is a ratchet, arm an extension , that can have different tools snapped on as needed. Palm, Finger, knife edge, back hand, fist or elbow. MMA sport limits the tools for a reason, and it’s not to protect your hands.
Palm strike is the best tool for poking the eyes too. It suits self defense, no rules, but punch suits the combat sport because eyes poking is not legal.
Punches for reach, accuracy, and variability, and palm strikes for speed, power, and safety. Punches for jabs and light strikes, and palm strikes for heavier strikes, usually finishers.
I am going to somewhat disagree with that. I have knocked people out with a jab before. It is just a matter of hand positioning, and a good strong straight wrist. I am a big fan of both the fist and the palm strike.
Palm strikes, punches, hammer fists, or back fists, as long as you hurt your attacker in a way that incapacitates him for a moment for you to escape and run away without hurting yourself bad, is good.
Hook palm strikes (or better named - power slaps) have more room for error. You can completely miss with the palm, and end up clubbing them with the wrist or forearm. I'm glad Nick pointed that out for the hammer fist. For an inexperienced person - you want something that is easier to use - and a hammer fist and palm strike does that. For a pro sports person though - a fist can land on a smaller target, and gives you those vital few extra inches of reach, therefore palm strikes have more limited utility (annoying up-close) strikes. Additionally, you need to consider the difference in resilience between a person on the street and an experienced sports fighter. A boxer or mma athlete is well conditioned to take strikes, push through adversity, and isn't going to fall down after a couple of punches. An aggressor on the street however is much more likely to back off if you put up ANY sustained semi-decent resistance at all. Nick - what's your thoughts on that? For self defence - conditioning yourself to be comfortable with verbal and physical aggression, and training a mindset to fight back are just as important as learning advanced techniques.
Don’t over think it is what I say. A mans instinct is going to be to throw wide hooking strikes (open or closed hands), hammerfists, and to instinctively grab and grapple. Whatever you do, DO SOMETHING. Commit to a course of action, and do so violently and repetitively. Most of us don’t train for a living, so simplicity is key.
Palm strikes are very effective for striking at the throat. I'm aiming for vitals in a serious self-defense fight. Collapsing your opponents airway is going to cause them serious issues.
karate hand techniques like hammer fist, palm strike, knife hand all this techniques works and this techniques were tested and used in real street confrontations. nowadays karate became sports and prohibited all this hand techniques during competition and dojo kumite ,except punching techniques but in street where there is no referee no rounds when you have to finish him as quickly as possible this hand techniques is lethal can give serous damage to your opponents.I love your video.Thank you
Palm strikes can give the option to use the fingers on the throat/eye area as well as to push someone or someones head against a hard object like a wall. I don`t punch. I limit myself to hammerfist (loaded or not) and palmstrikes. I`m a lefty and hammerfist the collarbone, neck and head. If the hamerfist is loaded and gets blocked i als hammerfist the ribsfrom the side and then up again.
I spent 27 years boxing and have broken enough bones in my hands over the years. In quite a few street fights ive found myself in over the years, i ALWAYS palm strike. Never punched. If out at a bar one idiot or a friend would tell somebody i boxed for a good many years, and it never failed, some drunk would have to test it and force you to ram his head into your hand. Once you break your hands, your fight is over and a palm strike can be fired from one third, to half extension and lightning quick With little to no marks left behind. The best fight is one you win, and one you dont get prosecuted for at a later date. Put his ass out, and get the hell outta dodge.
@@eduffy4937 Yeah, for sure! I'm sure boxing prepared you for the mechanics of palmstriking as they are often the same. The only boxing strikes i find awkward with the palm is the uppercut and the overhand. Boxing is such an amazing art btw, i love it.Did Muay Thai for a good number of years, and while it's good, i think their footwork and head movement is vastly inferior to boxing. Since it's rare to find someone with "practical" experience in palmstriking, did you ever snag a finger coming in or found it hard to penetrate the guard since the hand is bigger than the fist? I noticed Nick has a very open hand when striking(maybe it's faster that way) but i try to curl the fingers inward to avoid getting them caught. What's your opinion on that?
I've always stuck to the rule... palm strike the hard bony targets so I don't break my hands, and use a good solid fist against anything fleshy. It just seems to fly naturally like that for me.
Nice. It's a real pleasure to see professionals acknowledging that not only Muay Thaï and BJJ can work in real fights (provided you pressure test your martial art ;-)).
You lose about 2" of distance, with a palm strike, thus, it can be better for closer range applications. You Can develop your fists to be stronger, using Iron-Fist training (wall mounted sandbags + Chinese Lineament). Also, if you want a stronger and more solid punch... you should have developed greater Wrist strength, and grip strength. You dont want your wrist rolling on impact. When hitting with the Palm, you can hit direct, or you can angle it to hit with the outside part of the wristbone... which is more "Pointed". Additionally, this can be used in any direction, such as dropping downwards into the OPs forearm (Wing Chun Jut Sao). Obviously, the palm on its side, is a "Chop". There is also the crane-beak shape, which can be used to hook with the front, or strike with the rear. A sport fighter often tucks their chin low... which causes the forehead to be closer. Palm the forehead down the centerline... and see what happens...
What do you think of the horizontal hammer fist? Elbow is up shoulder height and the fist strikes horizontal to the chin or to the opposite side of face. The fist can also strike upward with the elbow low coming up and the hammer fist striking upward. The strike would be like a flicker jab, instead of striking with the backhand knuckles the strike is made with the hammer fist.
It's my experience from boxing that you should punch with a good closed fist but you have to accurately and in a timely manner pick your targets! Cross training in Kenpo Karate has taught me that using an open hand Palm you can pretty much bitch slap the hell out of someone on any part of their body without the concern of injury to your hand. I like to have the ability to choose between the two given the situation!
Punches do more damage to your opponent, but can also do a lot of damage to striker, particularly if you’re not experienced. Wrapping gives a false sense of security. When unwrapped I believe your hands can easily break. That’s why I do unwrapped training for my hands. You need to practice wrapped and unwrapped, closed and open. In self defense I stay away from encouraging punching as opposed to open hands.
Okay so if you analyze what a fist is in what a palm is so a fist is a bunch of loose bones are connected by flexible tissue a shock absorber basically right and your wrist is the end of the bones that are in your forearm yet pretty much like getting hit with the end of a bow staff all the energy that is in the bo staff along its vertical plane is projected to the end of the bow when it hits you in the face just like your wrist with no shock absorber fist there to absorb some of the energy
Palm Heel, you should hit with the heel. A sore wrist is better than a broken hand. That being said, Palm Heel should be used in close range. And by the way, a palm strike ain't a slap.
Last time I had to defend myself I broke my knuckles. If im forced I to a physical situation again I'll be going with the palm strike. May not be able to deliver as much pressure on one point bit its safer for me and the other guy will still feel it

In UFC they don't palm strike because the padding is on the knuckles. That's all. In real life, the human body is instinctively designed to "pound" with palms and the bottom of the fist, not knuckles. When you bench press, you lift heavy weights with your palms. Very stable. The short guy's demonstration at 2:05 of tighting hand on impact, what he calls closing hand on impact was horrendous. Nobody would ever punch like that. Like hand almost wide open then closing it like that near the end. Totally ridiculous. Normal is hand not completely tightened, then tightened. At best one could say he was exaggerating to make a point, but a realistic demonstration rather than a cartoon exaggeration, is better. If he wants to do a cartoon exaggeration then he should say so beforehand. Then he says the "closing" of the hand makes the punch take longer time.. What on earth. You could always have it tight to start if he somehow takes more time to do the punch 'cos it takes him so long to close his hand.
Still less potential damage to yourself hitting bone with the wrist than the smaller bones of the fingers and hand with a punch. Palm and open hand strikes/chops are often trained as less target specific than punches in various combatives, especially early WW2 based combatives. Also as demonstrated open strikes can provide a larger striking surface to include the whole forearm compared to the 3-6in or so width of your fist.
Recently iv been forced to palm strike. So iv been doing as much research as possible. Ofcourse I watched the pancrase fights long ago and such. Iv never broken my hands punching. I'm a former bouncer aswell. Which is incredibly ironic as to how I injured my hand. I was at the bar I use to bounce at with some friends. I still know 2 of the bouncers there. Younger guys, have known them both for a long time. The one found himself in trouble dealing with some people, so I went to help. I caught a hard bone. My hand felt off afterwords, yet me and my friends knew it wasn't broken. Metacarpals didn't swell up or hurt. It was just up around my centre knuckle. Had been in many situations before where I had bad landings, luckily never had a break, and honestly I would have taken a break over what this is. So because I knew my hand wasn't broken, I just left it. However, the smallest bit of pressure on that centre knuckle would feel like a pin was going into my hand. I waited about a month, it didn't go away, and what I noticed happening was that centre knuckle grew about twice as high as my other hands. I know it sounds very stupid and negligent. It was. People need their hands for work and play, and I should of taken it alot more seriously, but, coming from combat sambo, it was kind of engraved in us to walk something off. If it moves, it'll move better once it's healed. This didn't. I mangled and shuffled something in there, and once it healed over, it healed incorrectly. It's nerve damage, and may be permanent since it's not getting better. It's been a few months now and it's still about as bad as day one. It may go away in time, but unfortunately, it's not improving, which it should have been. It's a tough transition regarding muscle memory, but its coming along. You can do alot my sly things with palm iv learnt, and they actually synergize with some sambo strategies pretty good. I played with a bit of sumo for a while, just with some friends, because for a while I thought i wouldn't be able to do mma anymore, so I was preparing to possibly compete in sumo, or combat jiu jitsu, where palm strikes are allowed. Instead I conpletely forgot that their legal in mma. So iv continued training with them, luckily the gym we recently found is perfectly fine with me using them. Our sambo gym closed down last year, so a few of us went in search if a new gym, which all had a bjj grappling base. Off point, but we had some terrible luck with gyms. The one already had hard feelings towards us from an open mat bout that got out if hand between two guys. It happened at their gym. Unfortunately one of our guys let his ego get to him a bit and escalated a fight. We thought we were passed that, but they all saw us just as thr other guy, who wasn't with us. So we moved on from that gym. We than tried another where we knew some guys. Was a bit more expensive to join, but we thought we'd try it out. This time it was the instructors ego that pushed us out. My friend was one of our sambo instructors first students when he first opened his shop back in the early 90's. So he had almost 30 plus years of sambo training. He never competed, he always was just a hobbiest. So he has muscle memory for every situation ingrained in him. He just goes on auto pilot. My buddy couldn't get a submission on thr black and brown belts, but he constantly out positioned them. In our sambo, our instructor always emphasized fighting from the top and not the bottom, so we had good wrestling. These bjj guys did not. So when drilling, my buddy refused to listen to the instructor over certain things. The instructor said that keeping the sambo technique was going to water down his jiu jitsu, while my buddy refused to use something that didn't feel right or work for him. There's alot more to the story, but the two just didn't see eye to eye, and my friend was eventually asked to leave if he chose not to learn anything. So we followed. Around this time, I had my incident with my hand. At the same time, we had found another gym that was a really unique hybrid of a few different arts, and could tell the instructor there had some ego aswell, but we thought we would be alright. At this point, we honestly would of just been happy with a place with mats and water, which it had. We ran into another problem however. The guy wanted us to try out some of his arts and. E a part of a schedule if we were going to pay the membership. Which made no sense to us. The deal breaker though was my situation. I explained to him that I couldn't punch with a fist at the moment, uncertain of when it may get better. He completely brushed me aside and said I couldn't train with them if I couldn't punch. So we all left again. Insane right, we should of all bought a lotto ticket with the luck we had by now. I'm not joking about any of this. It turned out that our buddy with us Chris, had a brother that was friends with a guy from the first gym we went to, but had some tensions with. They got talking, and he told him how bad our luck had been. It really is pretty funny when you look at it. Like some lost dogs that are on a mission to look for a new cave, but keep getting booted out in the rain. So the guy got talking to the instructor there, and we actually got invited to come back with no hard feelings. I guess they felt bad for us. We were free to share and use our sambo training, and rhey were all perfectly fine with sparring with me using palm strikes. This experience has really hit a few of us hard. We know competing is on a different level than just being a hobiest, but now a few of us would like to test our potential. So I might give it a shot, and possibly be the first to enter an mma bout using palm strikes exclusively. It won't be anytime soon. I'm going to be training hard for some time to prepare. However, if I do, win or lose, I'll let you know where the footage will be if you'd like to assess it. The way that knuckles pertruding, I doubt my hand will get better without surgery. If that's even an option. So I'll go down this road and see how it goes. I'll be sure to watch more of your videos and take any advice I can from palm strikes, hammer fists, and for arms strikes, since I have to switch up my arsenal a bit. If you'd like to use my story on injuring my hand you can. I'm now an advocate of not striking with a fist in a public altercation.
At 1:20 what on earth is the short guy doing, standing on one leg hitting himself in the stomach, that is the worst demonstration I have ever seen of anything! I guess Nick's interpretation is correct that he's talking about a hit to the ear. But what on earth.
It's NOT about the pressure-- it's about FOCUS and what you can do wtih palm strike vs. punch and HOW much safer it is for palm strike- and what you can do AFTER you palm strike. With palm strike you can immediately grab the head and come forward for a knee to the face... or much more-- punch you can't. Palm strike you can damage the face a LOT more than a punch without the risk of messing up your fingers, wrist etc.. and palm strike leaves the hand open for OTHER moves much faster. Punches - as he says- DO NOT do more damage.. you're going bone on bone and that's just STUPID.... BOXING, as with most of what this fools says-- is STUPID.. outside the ring- you're F..d if boxing is all you know. He's talking about being better and clocking wiht a fist-- that's BS-- it's NOT that easy.. you go against a street fighter and they'll rip you a new ahole!!!!
Bas Rutten palm striked because of the RULES! Yes there are uses to palm strikes but lets not get carried away. But yes all those "never do this" or "always do this" is stupid. Regardless if you punch or do open hand techniques you need to train and know how to deliver it.
Yes, it gets brought up time and time again and has become somewhat of a myth . He became damn good at it though. We have to remind ourselves that we are NOT Bas Rutten... 😄

You have to be more accurate with palm strikes to avoid hitting your wrist on bone
Palm strike better , bec closed hand is risky
Cross strike
I feel like a slap nktva palm strike is embarrassing more than a punch I'm front of people
I prefer palm strikes. I’m an artist and wouldn’t want to wreck my hands.
if you use thw HEEL of the palm, it will not be as widespread as you are showing...my .02
Recently iv been forced to palm strike. I'm now an advocate of not striking with a fist in a public altercation.
um..the nose through the brain is a myth
Also, your nose is not going in your brain. Ever. Kinda lost me there.
Don't show this video to the Armchair Violence guy, lol.
Damn this dude old for fighting.
Too much talking
Bas Rutten palm striked because of the RULES! Yes there are uses to palm strikes but lets not get carried away. But yes all those "never do this" or "always do this" is stupid. Regardless if you punch or do open hand techniques you need to train and know how to deliver it.
Yes, it gets brought up time and time again and has become somewhat of a myth .
He became damn good at it though. We have to remind ourselves that we are NOT Bas Rutten...
