His speaking voice is so beautiful. It kind of flows so even and it's soothing to listen to. I'd love to have him read my favourite book to me by a crackling fire.
Naomi Martin He does that for charity sometimes. I paid $5,000 for him to read "The Giving Tree" to me and my girlfriend (her favorite book) for her birthday last year. He read it over Skype. It was beautiful. We didn't have a fire going, though. Next time. He said he'd donate the money to animal rescue.
Ray Klish Yes, but you missed the part about the proceeds going to charity. That was a big part of it as well. I'd rather pay for something I like and have the money go somewhere good. And of course the $5k is a bit overstated as one receives a tax deduction, so it was more like $3,500.
I saw him at Shaky Knees and I was screaming "I love you" and he told me to drink water to prevent dehydration. I was not on anything. I just love him and his music so much.
Hey Sam! Stop putting yourself down - "this or that wasn't so elegant" "that was sparse". All the way down here in tiny New Zealand you have been my favourite musician since I got my hands on a bootlegged copy of your most budget lo-fi unreleased home recordings in 2005. Everything you have produced is incredibly beautiful, from the most basic of acoustic guitar hushed melodies through to your masterfully arranged "symphonies". I saw you live in Wellington with a ten piece band back in 2008 and while it was one of the best live shows I've ever seen in my life, nothing can beat returning to your stripped back home recordings. Just you, me, and your guitar. I think this is when I'm most moved by your innate power as an artist.
It took Sam 10 years to write Tree by the River. Man - what a perfect song. I love the last piece in particular - "Dark canyon road, I was coy in the half-moon; happy just to be with you, and you were happy for me. I think we have all been there.
Ohh Sam Beam, your music will always have a place in my heart. The 4AD session he did a while back is my favourite, whenever I listen to it it brings me back to my time of solitude with the horses and animals in the Canadian wilderness. Very fond memories of a simpler time. Also countless hours of playtime on my Ipod backpacking through Southeast Asia, when I did not have too much music available to me...
Sam and Iron & Wine in general are amazing! I was pleasantly surprised with how jam band like they were live. It's been 2 long years since I've seen them and I really hope they tour around me again! One of my absolute favorite artists. Thanks for the video KEXP!
what i love is on any of sams vids there will be comments from 2 months ago to 8 years ago or whenever it went up. A beautiful finger style guitarist and an amazing songwriter. Please come back to melbourne Aus, we miss ya
Lion's Mane got me through many dead end jobs. Hit so hard home especially for what I was doing at the time. Juggling a busy life, love, and family. Love to hear a new spin on it.
The performance of these songs is so much better than the released albums. I wish Sam would keep closer to the intimate arrangements and skip the over production.. these are fantastic!
I love the warmth of his voice in those first two songs. It sounds a lot more natural than when he goes into that higher register. Of course, he never sounds bad.
He was unreal at RedRocks last Thurs. He commanded the crowd's attention without even trying. Walked on. Played. Walked off. Well done good sir! Well done
Iron and Wine, Sam Beam, is something from the past for me,, maybe because I was trying to move on or somethiing, IDK why exactly, but after listening to a KEXP recording of another band I love, Iron & Wine popped up and I'm so glad it did. (The other band was Lavender Diamond ft. Becky Stark)
Thanks KEXP! Miss that time in my subjective musical experience, 2007, when so many great bands were appearing from out of nowhere with these magical folkish sounds. Felt like a link had been re-connected. While many of them seem to have fizzled with age, or cultural forces of voracious cruelty, Sam Beam is among those few whose music only gets better.
I agree with other comments here that Sam is so much better when he strips things down. Just him and his guitar is so much more intimate, and so much better than their produced studio equivalents. His thoughtfulness really shines through as a solo act, in much the same way that Kelly Joe Phelps is better with just his guitar. Less is more.
"Wasn't as elegant"? I'll have you know, Mr. Beam, that "Tree by the river" is my all time favorite song by you and definitely one of the top 5 by anybody. So don't downplay your greatness. =)
Most Surprised By These Interpretations of 4 BLUES TRAVELERS Originals: Sadly I just found this band tonight (2019) & as a former fellow of H.O.R.D.E. tours & acoustic arts I instantly sunk my fangs in... Only to find another (talented) artist biting "LowHanginLyrics"
Samuel Beam sounding like James Taylor? “Lion’s Mane” is a classic track from his first album, “The Creek Drank the Cradle” (2002). Play it again (16:50) and rethink what you’ve just said. He improved loads on the original and delivered this refined version. It’s very generous of him to share his awe-inspiring music with us and he’s being genuinely modest when he said (6:02) the album “Kiss Each Other Clean” (2011) isn’t “quite as elegant” as “Ghost on Ghost” (2013). By the way, I don’t think Iron & Wine needs a 12 piece band, for Sam + acoustic guitar = perfect chemistry. When it comes to distinguished, brilliant musicians, bands are an unnecessary distraction. I hope he goes back to basics on his next albums. So there’s no way Sam Beam would ever sound like JT.
Greetings from a fellow editor and aspiring director. Audio sounds great, but I couldn't finish the first song because the straight cuts were jarring. Many of your cuts were too late, and I'm guessing you did this in a multi-camera editor and just clicked to choose your cuts. Live music videos require much more precision when editing. If you're going to use straight cuts, you HAVE to anticipate the beat and cut a little bit before it to give the viewer a chance to get ready for it. Cross dissolves may have worked as an alternative.
if you really couldnt finish the first song you need re evaluate how you listen to music. there was nothing wrong with it just enjoy what your listening too
just met this guy. what a nice human. great performance right here
That voice -- it's like a warm blanket wrapping your entire existence.
It's like a nice hot tortilla, filled with beans and cheese...ready to be devoured by my soul.
Oh god, this is a joke right?
Oh hot tortilla God- filled with beans and cheese... ready your entire soul to be devoured by my warm existence.

david letterman what a great gift. I love that book as well. Thank you for sharing such a unique story.
+david letterman $5,000...
+david letterman Really, 5 grand to read something over Skype? Not to be a dick, but this isn't too believable. :/
Ray Klish

Fantastic, thanks again for awesome live Performances, KEXP.
0:48 Grace For Saints and Ramblers
6:21 Tree By The River
12:04 Low Light Buddy Of Mine
17:08 Lion's Mane
Lion's Mane, what a beautiful rendition!
I saw him at Shaky Knees and I was screaming "I love you" and he told me to drink water to prevent dehydration. I was not on anything. I just love him and his music so much.
Hopefully you weren't yelling that during songs.... hate ppl like that at shows.

+Benjamin Elise Johnson that attitude is what gets him to write such beautiful music
OH YEAH MAN.....:)''''' IM HEARIN YA.....
Exactly!! The band is ok... Like on .. I was walking. But alone him and his guitar and that voice.... Wow!

Great musican, great man, great beard.

It took Sam 10 years to write Tree by the River. Man - what a perfect song. I love the last piece in particular - "Dark canyon road, I was coy in the half-moon; happy just to be with you, and you were happy for me.
I think we have all been there.
He is genuinely so nice and humble. He doesn't try to be humble or unpretentious, he just is.
milk I love Sam Beam, but how can you tell?
I found him back in 2013 and still amazed by how he brings the intimacy and the pureness of his music alive and simply healing.
i wrote that song back in 2009

I have literally watched every Iron and Wine, KEXP concert and I have loved every one of them!
Such an incredible talent! I love when it's just Sam and his guitar.
Theres some soothing feeling about listening to his songs. I'm in love with this guy
This is a beautiful version of Lion's Mane
Sam and Iron & Wine in general are amazing! I was pleasantly surprised with how jam band like they were live. It's been 2 long years since I've seen them and I really hope they tour around me again! One of my absolute favorite artists. Thanks for the video KEXP!
In the very last few seconds of the video, you can hear Sam thanking the radio host again. Such a humble guy.
How eloquent his songs are even though he never raises his voice!
Such a beautiful human being he is...~
what i love is on any of sams vids there will be comments from 2 months ago to 8 years ago or whenever it went up. A beautiful finger style guitarist and an amazing songwriter. Please come back to melbourne Aus, we miss ya
This is the meaning of life.
I did not expect a beard!
His regular voice is so gentle and it makes perfect sense. So is his singing.
Great, new discovery for me
Lion's Mane got me through many dead end jobs. Hit so hard home especially for what I was doing at the time. Juggling a busy life, love, and family. Love to hear a new spin on it.
This is pure beauty in every sense.
The performance of these songs is so much better than the released albums. I wish Sam would keep closer to the intimate arrangements and skip the over production.. these are fantastic!
I like the Og tree by the river but I would like an acoustic tape on platforms for sure, having the option would be awesome
I love the warmth of his voice in those first two songs. It sounds a lot more natural than when he goes into that higher register. Of course, he never sounds bad.
he's such a soft spoken badass and those are my favorites.
He was unreal at RedRocks last Thurs. He commanded the crowd's attention without even trying. Walked on. Played. Walked off. Well done good sir! Well done
biggest star you hosted in the studio so far
Iron and Wine, Sam Beam, is something from the past for me,, maybe because I was trying to move on or somethiing, IDK why exactly, but after listening to a KEXP recording of another band I love, Iron & Wine popped up and I'm so glad it did. (The other band was Lavender Diamond ft. Becky Stark)
dont know how many times I've watched this!!
The live version of grace for saints and ramblers is so fantastic
Saw him live in Paris, France. He's such a down to earth dude
Thanks KEXP! Miss that time in my subjective musical experience, 2007, when so many great bands were appearing from out of nowhere with these magical folkish sounds. He is sooo good
this version of "Grace for saints and ramblers" sounds so much better than the album version

Outstanding! Thank you.

nossa, como eu passei tanto tempo sem conhecer essa banda? sensacional!!!
beautiful
When I die, I imagine the angels singing like in lions mane when he hits those high notes
He has one of the most beautiful voices in music along with Damien Rice, Ray LaMontagne and Jose Gonzalez...
maestro.....
Soothing :) thanks for the music
Wonderful....!
Sam is a wizard
Robin Pecknold and Sam Beam do collaboration. BOOM!
+Ilham Maulana don't let Paul Duncan sit by the wayside. Dream voice trio
I think I would die of happiness if that happens.
That would literally be the GG
The bees knees, the cats pajamas!!
He has really really really nice laughters
Great music and Sam seems like one chill dude!
He talks like Matthew Mcconaughey wants to sound in a Lincoln commercial
yes
loved it
I'll have the man I will mary to listen to you, Sam. Your voice is mesmerizing and cozy.

Very unique voice!!
Classic voice.

Another great NPR interviewer who is definitely not drunk. Good stuff.

Big Like !
I usually see people use the Shure SM7B but in this video I'm guessing he's using his own Blue Encore 300?
A flower among the weeds.
he loks like he belongs in the 1800s but hes super humble and amazing relaxing musican
some of his songs i find amazingly boring and generic, and others i find absolutely amazing.
Very nice, but I like it much more with all the accompaniment he includes on the recordings.
It should be "And it all came down to you and me"
wattoosay that would be grammicaly incorrect though.
Hey it's that dude from epic meal time.
He looks he can be in duck dynasty lol! but i love his music!
does anybody know the chord progression for low light buddy of mine? can't figure out what cord he's playing after the c chord
Em (He's in a white car...) - Am (I love you...) - Em - C (I love you...) - B7 (New fruit hanging...)
thanks man
tenks
I wanna marry his beard.
Sam Beam!!!
Imagine how much better he would sound if he was playing a Martin ...:)
