I am a native English speaker from Canada, but been living in Brazil for many years...the only one I wouldn't understand would be "bye, Felicia"...all the others were pretty common and usual to me ( I live here but watch mostly American TV). I always teach slangs to my students and they love it. Using slangs is a GREAT way to connect with younger people.

"Shook" isn't new slang. Elvis Presley was "all shook up" in the 1950s.

    • @brookreed9621
      @brookreed9621 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I was very much not around in the 50s but I believe the difference now is that ‘shook’ is able to stand on its own. If he wanted to express the same feeling now he could just say ‘I’m shook’ instead of ‘i’m shook up.’ It’s also used pretty regularly in a way it wasn’t before. For example after seeing a surprising performance by a performer you could say ‘I’m so shook.’ Which wouldn’t really have made sense in the same casual way 70 yrs ago. Language evolves but it doesn’t just appear out of nowhere

Hi Lisa, it's funny to know that "shade" is not a really verb, sometimes i read the news about pop stars like Madonna or Poppy and other artists-singers, and media sometimes quotes on the internet "Katy Perry shaded Rihanna with her last outfit" and i didn't understand what was going on at first, but later, i don't remember if i looked it up on the dictionary or just understood the meaning, but i got the idea that it happens when somebody makes a "virtual" shadow over somebody, making her or him look at a "lower level", so i thought it as a real IDIOM, jejeje and now i see it's a slang.
With the other one, "Chill", happened to me something similar, i AM used to LISTENING * to music while i work or study at home and put some channels of very different types of music, and there are some named "Chill out" music, i didn't know what it means, because i'm a musician but i had never heard or learnt that style before, but later i recognized it as a kind of happy and relaxing music for creating a comfortable atmosphere in the swimming pool, at holidays or a break , so i thought that meaning really existed , but now i see it's another slang or a very informal word.
*I recognized that mistake with the am - ing grammar rule you explained on the other video of 11 common grammar mistakes, thank u very much for all the information and learning you give to us, i'm watching all your videos

With all due respect it might be a good Idea to explain what AAVE is to the viewers instead of calling it slang. Especially since AAVE is now a recognized language in its own right with it own syntax and things. Because some people might become offended by hearing that their dialect of English is considered slang and thus having reduced importance since many people do speak almost exclusively in AAVE. Also these are Not new words they have been around the African American community for over 20 years.

Native speaker of English here, forty-one years old, but fairly well-versed in modern slang for a person of my age because I'm online a lot.
"Bye, Felicia!" wouldn't be a good expression to use when you are complimenting someone. Just thought I'd throw that out there. That's usually intended as the opposite of a compliment, like "I'm tired of dealing with you."
Based on the heart react, I take it that the admin of this page knew you didn't mean any harm by it, though. :)
Well done on the other two slang expressions you used! "You slayed it!" and "You are the GOAT!" are good ways to compliment someone or tell them that they did a good job.

as a 2020 teen in hs in my opinion: chillin is vibing or hanging (out) low key, not really on fleek no one really says that lol but say it if you want, salty isn’t used a lot unless you’re using it as an adjective, throw shad is putting something or someone in a badish light, no one really uses lit that much anymore it’s more like “fire” or “bomb”, nope on nah that much, flexing is showing off (not your muscles lol), YESSS shook “i was shook(eth)” say shook or shooketh, never used i’m done with it, woke is aware, ghosting is cutting off all signs of communication in every way with one person, i’m dead “😭🤣🤣🤣” explained by emoji’s, “bye, Felicia!” just stop we’re not in the sixth grade anymore, not a lot of people say slayed it a lot but some people do i do every once in a while, umm GOAT isn’t something you hear a lot but you should know what it means if it’s said, cancelled is getting rid of the thought of something for yourself ig? sorry for the horrible grammar, but i was writing as i was watching 👌🏼👍🏼😁🙂 it was pretty accurate for the most part tho

Hi Lisa! Great video! I'm from Argentina and have heard most of the words but time goes by so fast that sometimes it's difficult to catch up with all the new slang words. Where I work at and American company and many people come from San Francisco to train us and they use the word "Ghost" as shadowing. So they explained us that they use this term when you need to learn from a peer's work, observe them in every day tasks.

I heard a younger teacher used the word, 'ghost' last week while we were testing ELD students online. At the end of our first day of testing, she said, "Hopefully no more students ghost on me tomorrow." That was the first time I heard the word used as a verb. I kind of like it because I can visualize it very well.

This isn’t American culture but white culture. The fact that these 3 very white boys are doing this is appropriation and showing just shows these terms are mainstream. Also, I hear these terms at work routinely in the NYC lexicon. When you say it isn’t use in professional environment shows that it isn’t accepted in white America culture but in fashion, entertainment and music industry- these terms and others are more common than you say.

It funny to see that American slang has pervaded other cultures and languages so quickly... In France, the kids now use "ghoster/se faire ghoster" (to ghost/to be ghosted) or "on fleek" too

      It’s not English American slang
It’s AAVE which is a dialect spoken primarily by BLACK AMERICANS. Learn the origins and pay respect.

Nice. I knew most of them. I can think of two more which are Hella and YOLO. Hella is a Northern California word that means a lot or extremely. And YOLO means You Only Live Once.

Probably, the difference of the slang from 15-20 years erstwhile, would be to build a form of surreptitious savvy slang language inherent for the juveniles (young people) or just to abbreviate and make typing more efficient, whilst degenerating the language.
It is commendable, and sometimes necessary to learn as much as possible so that one can listen and understand the youth to avoid misunderstandings and misinterpretations. A dignified, sophisticated mature man may want to keep his identity by not using silly slang.

Interesting stuff. But what people need more, as witnessed by the comments below, is your commentary on grammar.
When I receive such an email or text etc., which is so poorly written, I move directly to the delete key (and don’t even finish reading)
Just read the comments below. Brutal. I try to believe that much of the problem is ‘no proof reading” prior to hitting “send”.
And yes, English is a nasty language to learn, so thanks to those who have so much patience educating others.

Is it you the elite of English slang words ?
I don't know Slang words in English, only in French but i will not learn slang words in English because i don't know whether i will have opportunities to use them with British people ?
Well, if we can avoid to learn them, it is OK ...

I think in Chile, to flex = enchular. For example, "enchulé mi auto". And to ghost = ningunear (no eres ninguno, no eres nada): "mi jefe me ningunea permanentemente".

So instead of calling it "African American vernacular English", they just group everything as "slang"? Man this society loves taking everything it can from black people (including their dialogue) and try to rebrand it as their own 😂
    Clowns.
