  • In action here today we have the 1979 Incredible Hulk pinball machine by Gottlieb.
This is the last of the System 1 machines before Gottlieb began using their System 80 hardware.
The Hulk is a fairly sparce layout with only a couple of interesting shots/features. The spinner shot on the left is fairly satisfying, but with the light-weight plastic Gottlieb spinners, there's only so many revolutions you can get out of it. I understand that Gottlieb spinners are intended to be used differently (they're only supposed to turn three or four times on a solid hit) than Bally/Stern/Williams spinners, and I suppose with that in mind, they're okay.
The rules of this game are pretty neat.... complete the A-B-C sequence to light the special, but the A & B are the two kicker-where-there-should-be-slingshot thingies, so you can't actually shoot for them directly. And the C is the entire drop bank, which is a challenge to complete.
Completing the 1-2-3 sequence lights the lane at the middle of the right side for the extra ball.
An interesting "feature" of the 2nd generation system 1 sound board is that there are actually two entirely different sets of sounds, which can be changed via a switch on the board. The thing is, though, that the alternative sounds (not the sounds heard during this video) are so unbelievably bad that nobody would ever intentionally choose them over the "normal" sounds heard in this video. Another cool feature is the attract mode sound that plays every 6 minutes when the game is idle. It scared the crap out of me several times while I was working on this machine.
This game was designed by Ed Krynski with artwork by Gordon Morrison. It's a very cool looking game, even if it's not a great player.

New technologies usually start by imitating earlier ones, then evolve to find what they can actually do on their own terms. These really early solid-state pinballs are a great example--so many of them play just like electromechanical pinballs but with strange warbling sounds. Then, pretty soon, the manufacturers start to realize what the new technology can really do, besides eliminating a bunch of mechanical relays and bells, and things change.

A lot of feedback on this yet not a mention of the biggest thrill of pinball those classic chimes replaced by God knows what and not to forget the ever so beautiful sound of the 100 point gong

Gottlieb was always my favorite. Spirit, Haunted House, Black Hole, Caveman, Class of 1812, Q Bert's Quest, Genesis, etc. but truth be told they did put out some stinkers too.

The sounds in this video ARE the alternate sounds and NOT the best sound choice. The other sound option sounds much more agressive in keeping with the Hulk theme and they sound great especially when counting down 5x full bonus, it sounds like a stampede. GREAT GAME HULK, i have owned one since 1986.

Glyn Bowen well if you really want to buy one they have one still active in an amusement park called Luna Park at paphos in Cyprus while I was on holiday. Played it a few weeks ago but it wouldn’t take my money for some reason but it still works I think. I just can’t believe it’s there after 40 years.

Que de souvenirs sur cette machine magnifique, à la longue on claquait avec une boule et on passait l’après-midi avec 1 francs, le patron du rade faisait la tronche ...

I saw one of these at a pinball museum while I was at a museum in Gatlinburg, unfortunately I couldn't play it since it took a different type of coin. (Every other machine there ran on a card swipe thing you see normally at modern arcades now)

They shoulda add audio footage from the 1978 TV series, such as: "Don't make me angry. You won't like me when I get angry".

I completely forgot about that odd sound board. It seems strangely out of sink with what's going on on the playfield.

That's because they just re-used the sound board from Genie

I think part of it is the way each company's software handled multiple "hits" happening at once. Back then, they apparently still felt that players wanted to see and hear each individual "tick" of the score -- but they also wanted to make sure that if you hit a second target while the game was still handling the first, both targets would count (EMs couldn't do that).
I don't pretend to know the specific programming. But from playing a lot of games back then, it appears that Bally handled each target immediately and just buffered the score "ticks." Hit the last two drop targets on Mata Hari and you'll see two immediate bonus advances followed by an immediate target reset, the five low bells for 50,000, the knocker for Special if lit, and ten 100-point bells. Everything but the 100s is handled instantaneously. Gottlieb, it seems, buffers each individual feature you hit and handles them one at a time in the order you hit them. Hit the last two yellow drop targets and the right special lane on Count Down in quick succession, in that order, and you'll hear five 100s, a slight pause, five more 100s, another slight pause, the target reset, five 1000s for completing the bank, another pause, five 100s for the lane, and finally the Gottlieb "crack" knocker for the special.
In a nutshell, I think that's why Bally games were a little "snappier" than Gottlieb back then -- even when they used slower sound effects on Lost World.

Gottlieb could have made this game so much better with two simple differences. They should have made the slingshots active and traditionally angled instead of vertical faced and passive. They could have kept the kickers in them but the passive, vertical faced slings don't do this game any favors in the gameplay department.

So funny, you put a bunch of stickers of Hulk and so this turns into a Hulk pinball game, otherwise it'd be a super blame one, already seen in Genie for example

That can be said for many games with popular themes. Wizard, Captain Fantastic, Kiss, Hulk... ho-hum games that are made valuable due to theme.

In 1979, sound boards hadn't yet evolved to a point where unique sound effects could be created. As a result, all System 1 machines have one of two sound boards - one that produced very rudimentary tones or the one you hear in this video, which was a bit better than the earlier sound boards, but not by much. Within the next year, though, technology would allow for vast improvements in pinball and video game sound.

Those spinners were HORRIBLE during this period. Oversized and did not spin well at all. Nothing like ripping an EM spinner and hearing the score reels trying to keep up with a well placed shot. Just not the same experience. And give me chimes over warbles any day of the week. This would have been a nice layout for an EM.

I have a hulk. I am in the process of looking for a Gottlieb chime unit to put in it. I love solid state games, but sweet Jesus Mary and Joseph are the sound effects straight butt……. I don’t even want to play it anymore, I always play Cleopatra instead, because I love them chimes!
