Thanks Paul. That was a really good lesson. I learnt a lot especially with the Staccato. When on holiday in Ireland a great musician told me " Its not how many tunes you know its how many times you can play the same tune differently". I never forgot that. The little Poker Work in the right hands sounds glorious!!! It looks new. Is it Chinese made? Do you like it? It sounds A Okay to me and not too much of an air hog? Thank you! The first song I figured out was quite easy to find bass notes so I was a bit flabbergasted when the second song I tried only seemed to work with the root bass. I think this will help me add some variety to my melody

This is absolutely fantastic! Exactly what I need to get me out of a rut. I've played for years but find it hard to divert from the tune. I do 'crunchy' cross basing and chords in the right. I use a lot of bounce with my bellows and what I call bellows 'snap-off' but little else. Maybe it's my autism but I need help breaking out of the rut. Do you do any more of thse tutorials? Alexxx
It might be like 4 notes but there is nothing simple about it as one minute you pull then you push then you push them you pull it's been driving me mad trying to get them in the right order lol.
Thanks for the tutorial Paul. I'm struggling a bit to cover all the left hand buttons in some tunes playing on a GC melodeon especially quickly reaching from the top to bottom bass. I find the instrument hard to grip and to use all 4 fingers on the basses. Do you usually reach between the bass buttons with 2 fingers or 3 or 4?
Thank you for the demonstration. I have a question about one of the simpler features: According to which rules do you play some melody notes staccato? Mostly the first one in a pair of same notes, but not exclusively.
Good question Yes, first in a pair of matching notes is a good general rule (for English tunes at least). Apart from that I don't follow many easily formulated rules that I'm aware of. It's often just where you want a bit of a lift in the tune (often to go with jumps in Morris dances). However, based on five minutes just now of playing a few tunes round and seeing where I put the staccato notes: In more reel-like English tunes (with lots of groups of four quavers) you can get a nice snappy sound to the off beat by making the third quaver in groups of four staccato (works well in Soldier's Joy). And when you get three or more crotchets in a row I think I'd usually staccato at least one of them to keep it sounding lively (lots of examples of this in Princess Royal). Finally, staccato notes can often just be a good antidote to parts of a tune that otherwise might get a bit messy or "smudgey". Can be helpful to use one especially when you've got a quick pair of notes that change both button and bellows direction to make sure you get cleanly from one to the other.
