Air NZ don't take customers granted, it is just the brutal realities of trying to make a buck running an airline. and when it comes to economy fares brutal become savage. You would not want to own an airline, even a successful one, you would never Sleep a wink.
United are doing a good job with their CHC-SFO route even in economy. On my flights they offered a drink & snack after take-off, a main meal service, a mid-flight small filled roll, and breakfast. Meals were good. Plus the flight attendants offered water to passengers frequently throughout the flight. And the toilets were kept pretty clean too!😀
Exactly what price gouging are you talking about? Like booking a last minute same-day flight? That has always been and will always be expensive. If you book ahead, the price drops significantly. As for long haul, their prices are cheaper than most other major airlines on comparable routes - sometimes even the same flight. I think some people are becoming far too priveleged for their own good, you want first class service in economy seats and don't want to pay for it.

Air nz are pulling the engines off these fresh deliveries to put existing aircraft back into service. Usually because they need a certain fitout over the fitout options on the fresh deliveries.

For a very small operator it seems to me it was a daft decision.

Another plus is that you arrive at SFO around 6am & there seemed to be no other international flights arriving at that time. Got through immigration & customs in under 10 minutes.
The direct SFO-CHC-SFO flights were only during NZ summer, 3 times per week. Current pricing via Auckland is about NZ$1,800 for both Air NZ and United.
Honestly, I'm kind of sick of Air New Zealand having no competition because they can pretty much do what ever they want. I've been screwed by Air NZ one to many times now so I have no sympathy for them.
My issue with the airline is the 787 are 3-3-3 for economy when ANA does 2-4-2. Then on the 777 they went 3-4-3 when the original design was for 3-3-3. As others have commented they are charging high prices while providing small seats.
A knee jerk reaction to the covid pandemic was the airline axing 8 x 777-200's. There was half the airline's long-haul capacity removed. The airline is very poorly led, has had multiple issues with service delivery domestically, affecting thousands of passengers, thus ruining its reputation and the good will New Zealanders had for it. Combined with horrifically expensive domestic airfares and a pronounced recessionary environment in New Zealand, and it's had a period of time it would rather forget. They've had very public scraps with Auckland Airport in the media, which unfortunately shows the limitations of their leadership. They've axed supposedly unprofitable domestic routes and finally, they will only fly long haul to Asia or North America from Auckland, therefore other players have come in and grabbed the South Island international long haul market share. These are very competitive routes. If you were in Christchurch, who would fly to the $h1thole airport that is Auckland, just to leave the country, when you can do so at Christchurch on other airlines?
I tried flying nonstop from Christchurch to Melbourne last September, but on the morning of the flight, it was cancelled. And I was rerouted through Auckland.
Agreed, the international experience into and out of chc is currently superior to the mess that is akl particularly when it comes to customs border and security. At AKL It's a lottery. Good sometimes God awful at it's worst. Chc is smooth in comparison and the staff are friendly too
Perhaps also worth mentioning is the "revolving door", CAA and recent safety culture news there. And Christchurch is also leading economic growth and its 25-40yo population has shot up. Neglecting south island routes has cost them, I would joke it's not air NZ but air north island but...
Pre pandemic I always used Air New Zealand to go to Buenos Aires, return ticket was 300 NZ Dollars more than LATAM but unlike LATAM that stops first in Santiago Air NZ was flying straight to Buenos Aries, now for the same ticket Air NZ charge you double than LATAM, when I asked them the reason for that they said that the cost of fuel went up!
Trans-tasman or longhaul? Because I can tell you now that I can book a flight from Christchurch to Amsterdam through Air NZ up to $4000 cheaper than qantas depending on the class.
I agree with Nebsuns comment. We would always fly Air NZ on our Aus to US via Akl trips. Now their prices are way too high, not competitive with Qantas and customer service is not as good as it was pre pandemic. Now just will fly Qantas until I see Air NZ’s prices come down.
Air NZ have the extended range 787 10 to look forward to from 2025 onwards and once these PW problems are ironed out on the A320/321s, the future looks very rosy indeed for Air NZ...
Great video, I flew with Air New Zealand - great, but they still don't handle flights from Christchurch to Europe (you still have to go via Auckland) - for example to Singapore or another hub airport with a connection to Europe, but they also fly A380s to Christchurch, so the problem is not with the airport but with ANZ

It’s interesting reading a lot of these comments, they could be talking about Qantas. They also lost the plot through the covid years then resumed with extortionate price gouging and reduced service, almost like they hated their customers. The resemblance in business decisions is uncanny.
What happens when you're run by people with no vision. Too many CEOs are there today because of their short-term, shareholder-first thinking... this might work for a year or two. But all it takes is for one competitor to come along and actually be good at what they do, and the wheels start falling off.
last airline out of AKL as they are always the most expensive what do you expect when the ex boss somehow gets elected as PM (with no ability to do either job)
Thanks it was interesting to hear your opinions even though I disagree with some of them. The airline continues to navigate the challenges (as it always has ) of operating long haul services from our unique location in the South West Pacific and doing a good job of it. Imo. Laurie. NZ.
While I can see considerable efficiency gains in operating a single aircraft type, there is also risk that if the type is grounded (a la 737 MAX ), then their entire business will immediately stop, rather be able to shuffle other aircraft types aroound minimise service disruption. It is what risk management call a low risk / high impact event and Air New Zealand will need, what I imagine will be, quiet comprehensive contingency plans.

Our first and only experience of AN was not a great introduction. Initially delayed 25mins out of Brisbane, headed for Christchurch, we turned back during the taxi for a sick passenger - that was all fine. On the restart, the aircraft suffered a no. 1 engine sensor fault that engineers couldn't resolve and we disembarked. No alternative seats available, so we were transported into the city for accommodation, and 'updates to follow'. After no word for several hours, we phoned and were told we should have been informed that we had a flight to Auckland and need to be back in the airport. Made the flight, but the only info prior to boarding was 'details will be available when you land'... Landed and cleared customs by about 1:30am to find out we had a 6am flight to Christchurch... They offer accom in the city with a 1/2hr cab ride each way and check in no later than 5am 😳, so there was no point, we just slept on the airport. Not a great start to what did turn out to be a great 2 week holiday.
It amazes me when companies relating to travel wont ring outbound - surely they realize that means 150 people are going to call inbound angrily.I hate starting a holiday when Im driving sleep deprived.
Speaking to the market share element, you only need to look at the huge decrease in sectors between North America and China. There were 300+ a week, then that dropped to about 50 a week in it’s lowest points. So United, AA and Delta have had to put those jets to use elsewhere and that was to AUS & NZ. But Air NZ has recently taken back some market share with the big 3 reducing their schedules.
Can I just remind you all. The best way to give the Kiwi’s a small airline is to give them a large airline to begin with. If ANZ were actually capable of running an airline, Australia would still have Ansett…
To be fair, Ansett had huge financial problems before Air NZ took over. It is simplistic to blame the Kiwis entirely for Ansett's failure - it wasn't like they bought a healthy business.
I get the thought process of going for only 1 type of widebody but i dont think the -10 will work as they want it too. I feel they will need the 777 indefinitely
We've been pretty spoiled as a country for the last few decades with Air NZ as out flag carrier, but now as the competition starts to catch up it seems that Air NZ isn't focusing their operation in the right areas. There is still the same great service and relative reliability there has always been but dated cabin layouts combined with increases in price gouging seems to be forcing a lot of people away. Hopefully with more competition Air NZ can get back to industry leading standards they once held!
You think other airlines aren't in the same situation? Dozens of them have disappeared entirely, while some others are still trying to recover. Their new seat products are rolling out this year and the new planes will be delivered in 2026. Some airlines are still trying to cope with 20+ year old seats thanks to supplier delays.
Get Cebu pacific here. Great airline flown with them many times never a problem Air New Zealand a pimple on a camels back in size compared to Cebu pacific . And Cebu pacific prices a pimple on a camels back compared to outrageous air New Zealand prices I would love to see Scoot air here as well. I always fly jet star to Aussie and fly out of there using one of these airlines much cheaper
Gotta be careful with United. Just like South African Airways having a stumble during the early 2020s, United does the air routes between Newark and Washington DC to Cape Town / Johannesburg. Tough for SAA to get those routes back. Look out NZ.
Been flying 20 long haul flights a year on average for the last two decades. Air NZ’s only good aspect for myself as a patriotic NZ is the flight crew using the language of our country in its greetings and quintessential Kiwi humour. Drawback was under previous leadership airnz lost positioning regarding terminals and gates in many Asian places. Poorly negotiated by its leadership. Fyfe for sure would be an upgrade.
People acting like this is a NZ only problem, it's not. Some 'major' airlines are doing far worse and charging considerably more, while others have simply disappeared entirely. We're a small country with an equally small airline, in some markets we just can't compete with the big boys. If you want the same level of luxury and michelin-quality food as the likes of Emirates or Etihad, then I suggest you quit belly aching and move to Dubai, because you're not going to get it in little ol' Eketahuna. And make sure you have plenty of money, because you'll be paying a LOT more to get there.
Air NZ has become a dog of an Airline. I do travel a lot and always use Singapore or Southern China, both of which are ten times better in every respect and they do not go to 'ugly school' to get their air hostesses. Air NZ have been bankrupt 4x times and bailed out by the NZ government of the day. Be an exemplar airline in the Pacific rim only, no need to fly non stop to Chicago....this was a fuckheads idea. Air NZ cannot compete with the big boys, but needs seriously to take a long term strategic view. Forget the CEO ego trips.
Part of the Air New Zealand fleets still have de Haviland dash 8 q300, and atr 72 6000. I did flew with Air New Zealand to Queenstown. Air New Zealand will face competition with different airlines.
For Air NZ, their star alliance partners will always determine whether there is enough demand for them fly their own planes to Auckland. If United runs their own planes from Houston, Los Angeles or San Francisco, Air New Zealand will be able to reposition those aircraft to new routes. For Qantas, if American is going to fly their own equipment to Sydney from Dallas, Qantas should then switch their equipment to Houston and compete against United at United'a hub.
The executive team at Air NZ is made up of persons with no genuine business experience. And by this I mean that not one of them has started, grown and owned a business. They are career employees, with general experience in FMCG and political science. Lots of woolly ideas, but lacking the dynamic capability to make an airline business profitable and growing.
Yep. lots of 'career managers' ... this can be said of most companies to be fair... people who know how to manage their way to the top... doesn't mean they've ever known how to run a business. They've just learnt how to cover themselves in enough glory to get promotions
What use is an airline alliance to airlines with such canibalisation? I suppose individual alliances like AA / BA are valuable to avoid this kind of battle such as Qatar’s with QANTAS. Maybe they should leave and join Sky Team announcing a strategic partnership with Delta and squeezing United and AA.
Singapore Airlines are to import for ANZ. Their long standing joint venture offers a huge network for ANZ that no other alliance can do. I think there are 30++ flights a week between NZ and Singapore giving kiwis a lot of options

Air New Zealand sucks to be honest if you flying in New Zealand that’s why I never fly overseas by them because of that reason plus better service is on offer by the competition
Hmmm. Air NZ🤔 I prefer Airbus. & with all that’s going on @ Boeing. Probably the 777’s to the 787’s. Even so, trans Tasman on the A320 Neo in economy is uncomfortable. The seats are thin & hard. I wouldn’t want to sit in one for longer than 3 hours. Particularly if I’m paying premium prices. & on trans Tasman flights they serve half filled plastic cups of any beverage cept hot. In which you have to get a flight attendant to refill your measly drink. Just give me a can or a bottle ☝️ Like on Qantas or Jetstar. NZ domestic is expensive. Given the distances. Still I guess NZ has a smaller population yield. & aviation has so many changing variables. Still a brilliant airline. With a modern fleet. Inflight service is really good too.
Had Air New Zealand gone to Airbus A350 to the 900s to fly long haul they would not have had half the troubles NZL going long haul are having now, we are a long haul country just ask any of us that have done it,
the problem with the long haul fleet wasn't that type of aircraft. it's that they miscalculated the length of the pandemic and released the airplanes. while there are issues with capacity in the widebody fleet it had nothing to with technical issues as most of those airplanes were 777 and those were solid.. it's mis management.
Yes, it makes no sense for a small airline to have a mixed Boeing and Airbus fleet, especially since they are short of pilots. Airbus interoperability is the obvious choice for them.
Disappointing to see so many idiots in the comments section re price hikes. Greed is a percentage of those hikes (like every other company that’s ever existed..that’s why it’s a business) however there are more factors - airport costs, infrastructure and growth that’s essential to operate. It’s not hard to find articles explaining the ticket price increases, airports are also to blame yet they hide behind airlines.
You can get away with greed for only so long and then the customers wake up and then it’s a whole lot of management speak bullshit as an excuse as they go down the gurgler.

We recently flew to Fort Lauderdale from Auckland on United airlines. The Auckland to Houston legs on Air NZ were fantastic. The other legs from Houston to Fort Lauderdale on United were shockers. Two planes delayed with mechanical problems. Delays at the airports. And computers down. We were relieved to get home. US airports for non American passengers are shocking
Who would fly on an expensive airline anyways, most people would go for cheaper flights to a same destination. I don't get why they don't turn those 777 into air NZ freighters where profits really is. They focus too much on luxury flights that no one really ask for.

Laurie, Pan Am and Continental, Ansett, Virgin Australia..... the airlines come and go serving NZ and Australia. Air NZ and Qantas have continued to operate, but have hit us with higher fares in these times. At least we have a service to rely on , not the foreign fly-by-nighters.
If Air New Zealand is struggling to compete with United or American, why don't they just buy them out, transfer all the debt to the target airline and let it go bust, just like they did to Ansett.

Why they closed every european destination! Sadly air NZ best service was stopping in pacific. Why after having 2-3 stops on different routes they cut every stopover. If having daily connection to USA why not 3 days direct and southern or northern route twice minimum one stopp? In Samoa tonga or cook island F.. polynesia / hawaii? Why air NZ cut connection to europe. Sadly real great service on flights are gone from europe....
😂😂 the whole country is falling apart the economy in New Zealand is well broken and its caused by 1 group of greedy people. Air New Zealand are so expensive to fly with thats why Jet Star are having more and more flights coming.
The company is 51% owned by NZ government, so they are also hamstrung by policies within government regarding air travel and maintaining domestic air services. And, unlike the others mentioned, (American Airlines, & United), they can't not afford to maintain a large fleet, and without a large population in NZ (compared to USA and Australia). However, given the engine issues and challenges from Auckland Airport fee increases to pay for the second runway, and the cost of imported jet fuel in NZ ever increasing, and minimum wage increases which increases costs, and the existing high inflation. I would likely see that the propeller fleet shall be optimized again for short haul (ATR 72 with some Q300), A320 dropped for A321, and the 787 for long haul.
What policy regarding maintaining a domestic service are they hamstrung by? They clearly view their position in the domestic market ( essentially dominant, and with practically a monopoly in the regions) as a license to fleece domestic travelers.....they certainly aren't hamstrung by any requirement to provide affordable travel options to New Zealanders....
The government does not run the airline in any way, and minimum wage increases are not inflationary (yield over dividend is the first derivative of inflation, not govt spending etc)
No need to worry, the NZ taxpayer will bail out the airline if required. If the NZ government had let it collapse 20 plus years ago after the Ansett debacle someone would have stepped in and bought the brand. The mighty Christopher Luxan made the books look ok by selling assets and now he will do the same with the country.

So what? AKL has always been our main international airport.
Its a while since I have been at AKL but it is excellent at its current terminal building and upgrades. Number One for me!
Congratulations on 50,000 subscribers DJ
Cheaper to fly Qantas or Jetstar. Airnz made what $150m nzd last year? And cost arms and leg to travel with them
Trans-tasman or longhaul? Because I can tell you now that I can book a flight from Christchurch to Amsterdam through Air NZ up to $4000 cheaper than qantas depending on the class.
I agree with Nebsuns comment. We would always fly Air NZ on our Aus to US via Akl trips. Now their prices are way too high, not competitive with Qantas and customer service is not as good as it was pre pandemic. Now just will fly Qantas until I see Air NZ’s prices come down.
It's like most New Zealand corporates unbridled greed.
My last two flights back from the US i flew Quantas, much better, not all crushed in like sardines.
Air NZ needs to be brought down a few notches, too bloody expensive.
If Boeing is to blame for Trent 1000 issues, then Airbus must be to blame for the PW1000G issues
its neither, theyre the fault of rolls royce and pratt and whitney, respectively
Air NZ have never flown or owned A380s. What other world airline flies from Christchurch to Europe? none, the distance is beyond any aircraft
@@peterhancox5268 Singapore Airlines with A350-900 & Emirates with A380-800 operate daily to/from Christchurch providing flights via those airline's home ports to Europe..
There has always been minimal demand between Christchurch and any place in Europe. Fyi.
Don't Emirates only fly the a380 to Christchurch from Sydney because it's cheaper to operate that at a loss than the fees would be at Sydney for sitting on the ground.

We just can't seem to get any luck at work right now. Seems like every year some externally caused problem just slams our profitability. Constant aircraft delivery and reliability problems, pandemics and unsupportive government (owner) policies and directives. We actually have both P&W and RR engine problems right now not to mention much delayed 787 deliveries causing us to have to rent older 777s.

Qantas isn't the national carrier period. It's a private company
Add to the mix the many issues now surrounding Boeing aircraft and 'Huston we have a problem'...
last airline out of AKL as they are always the most expensive what do you expect when the ex boss somehow gets elected as PM (with no ability to do either job)
I preferred it when it was called Tasman Empire Airways Limited (TEAL) and when the aeroplanes were all teal in colour.
Douglas jets too my bro-- nothing better in the '60s and they looked sharp🤩

Tasmania is hardly a market for them, its mainland Aussie that always has been, fyi.
I get the thought process of going for only 1 type of widebody but i dont think the -10 will work as they want it too. I feel they will need the 777 indefinitely
The 77W will hang around until 2030 atleast. I believe the 2 x ex Cathay Pacific 77W’s are on lease for 5 years.
They should upgrade the a321neo order to a320xlr for akl to Rarotonga to la route and akl to Hnl onward to usa west coast

Gotta be careful with United. Just like South African Airways having a stumble during the early 2020s, United does the air routes between Newark and Washington DC to Cape Town / Johannesburg. Tough for SAA to get those routes back. Look out NZ.

Do the Stewards still bring around lollies prior to decent?
Yes. Flew domestic yesterday.
@@unframedarts5378 Ah the memories.

Good job, mate.
I suggest avoid using industry jargon such as optimising the schedule and instead explain what this means in plain language what this means.
On that general line..... the word is "Oceania"--5 syllables and try using "affect/ing/ed" in place of that awful "impact/ed".
It’s management speak for “we don’t know what the F we are talking about and are trying to pull the wool over your eyes”. I’ve seen it many times.
No long hall into the main land????? Der! what do tourists that come to New Zealand come to see and do?????
The executive team at Air NZ is made up of persons with no genuine business experience. And by this I mean that not one of them has started, grown and owned a business. They are career employees, with general experience in FMCG and political science. Lots of woolly ideas, but lacking the dynamic capability to make an airline business profitable and growing.
Yep. lots of 'career managers' ... this can be said of most companies to be fair... people who know how to manage their way to the top... doesn't mean they've ever known how to run a business. They've just learnt how to cover themselves in enough glory to get promotions
An extrapolation from NZ’s PM’s favourite saying, “All the problems are due to the shocking decisions of the previous CEO of Air New Zealand”.

Just give me a can or a bottle ☝️ Like on Qantas or Jetstar.
NZ domestic is expensive. Given the distances.
Still I guess NZ has a smaller population yield. & aviation has so many changing variables.
Still a brilliant airline. With a
modern fleet.
I do think Air NZ is a good airline. I usually travel with them.
It's the cringeworthy inflight safety videos that annoy me.
Air NZ should open to Airbus rather than licking the boots of the US administration...
They should have got some a330s or a350s but they picked Boeing again last time
Yes, it makes no sense for a small airline to have a mixed Boeing and Airbus fleet, especially since they are short of pilots. Airbus interoperability is the obvious choice for them.
@@xmj6830 you are meaning to tell me that an airline that operates A320s instead of 737s is licking the boots of the US administration?
Good luck with that. The Airline is run by people who have lived and will do anything for America. Airbus is the way to go.
Why? The 777 and 787 are more than capable aircraft. Who gives a toss who gets the sale?
Disappointing to see so many idiots in the comments section re price hikes. Greed is a percentage of those hikes (like every other company that’s ever existed..that’s why it’s a business) however there are more factors - airport costs, infrastructure and growth that’s essential to operate. It’s not hard to find articles explaining the ticket price increases, airports are also to blame yet they hide behind airlines.
You can get away with greed for only so long and then the customers wake up and then it’s a whole lot of management speak bullshit as an excuse as they go down the gurgler.
competition is healthy right?
60% of my Air New Zealand flights delayed this year (35 of 58) so far 12 hours lost to delays. Non existent customer service and don’t even think of trying to call the call centre - please hold the line your call is important to us - yeah right. The CEO is known as Greg Moron for a reason ! He needs to go back to sorting apples in the grocery aisle at Woolworths where he might be more appreciated.
What does "In a more sustainable manner " mean with regard to jet Airliners ??? Empty euphemisms.
Air NZ will obtain more 777’s before it gets rid of any. AKL-YVR-LGW will require more aircraft.

Flying is great , airports are annoying & inefficient 👎
Lets not mention the one point five billion dollars of tax payers momey required to keep it a float.
Lol Air NZ has never had a fleet of 200 aircraft, just a silly comment imo.
The comment was they didn't need a huge fleet, just one that all works.
No need to worry, the NZ taxpayer will bail out the airline if required.
