    Star-Derailing Role (from TV Tropes):
    -Dominic Janes (Jimmy's actor) never picked up a decent career after starring in this show. He had a voice acting role in Wolverine and the X-Men and a minor role in ER: but after that, he more or less retired from acting.
    -In fact, most of the live-action actors more or less fell off the face of the Earth after the series ended.

    I get what they were trying to do. They were going for that Fairly Odd Parents tone where the world is a goofy mean spiritied version of our reality that is meant to be unfair to the protagonist. The issue is that there is nothing to like about Jimmy unlike Timmy, and it fails to have that level of groundedness in its morals that is just comes off as cruel and unenjoyable.

      That’d be an interesting premise for a horror movie.

  • @RavenStarMedia
    @RavenStarMedia 2 ปีที่แล้ว +525

    This is a definite example of "interesting idea, awful execution". Having a cartoonist's creations come to life and interact with him (or someone given his brain in this case, I guess?) could make for a really cool concept, something like Who Framed Roger Rabbit without needing copyright permissions, if done right. You could play it for comedy, with a bunch of other people interacting with the cartoons, or play it as a psychological horror drama with only the cartoonist experiencing the cartoons' presence. That concept could have potential, again, if done right.
    Unfortunately, Out of Jimmy's Head was not "done right".

      @mattc2306 2 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      To be honest, I think the idea of a live action sitcom with 2D animated characters is actually pretty good by concept.
      Who Framed Roger Rabbit is the best example, along with less-than-stellar but relatively entertaining Son of Zorn and the original Space Jam.
      But Out of Jimmy's Head is just a mess of bad ideas done worse. Like, practically nothing about this show was done right nor entertaining in an ironic sense.

Disney had high school musical that got them more into teen sitcoms and less on animation in the same year reanimated came out for cartoon network transitioning into what would become their despised liveaction era that betrays their name.

    The worst thing about this trainwreck is that *they added a laugh track* halfway through, like somehow that'd save it.
    No, Cartoon Network, it - it didn't. In fact, I'm pretty sure that made the show infinitely more annoying than if it hadn't had one and the legacy it has is still felt - hell, Tom Ascheim is bringing it back in the form of ACME Night and *MORE* live action on the channel now, like it's gonna make the ratings better instead of tanking the network worse.
    Also, let me add something else: the sweet, sweet Ned cash they were trying to gun for? *THE SHOW ENDED IN 2007.*
    Update: all of the episodes are on The Internet Archive.
    One more thing, this show was the last Cartoon Network show to be aired in 4:3. This show. Not Chowder. This show.

      Okay looking it up Eat At Joe's is making this actually look a lot worse then it actually is. The only supposed full live action series coming is the Degreassi revival and even that will likely not go to CN at all more just HBO Max which since CN is attached to HBO Max's programming sometimes their shows get jumbeled together. Granted there are animated/live action hybrids like Tweety Mysteries coming but I have a feeling since those are also made to air on HBO Max the quality will be higher then that and yeah stuff like Space Ghost Coast To Coast show that good CN Live aciton/animated hybrds can exist even if this is no where near one of them. Speaking of older stuff though I don't really think CN needs to play live action movies at all that have no relation to anything animated that's been going on since even before Re-Animated was a thing that happnes from time to time sadly. Just be glad we're not at the point where CN had like two hours of reruns of goosebumps instead of doing a four hour block of Toonami... yeah that was a thing back in the day I shit you not.

    I've avoided Out of Jimmy's Head like the big smelly plague that it actually is because even the commercials for it show the mean-spirited nature. No wonder your blood seems to boil like lava. Any feelings I have towards mean-spirited media is usually strongly negative, but there are a few examples that usually make this work, such as any of Matt Groening's shows. This is an even better review than of the original Re-Animated, which was also really good despite the overall length.
    Also yes, I did notice the ducks. Reminds me of when James Rolfe used his daughter's LOL Surprise dolls in his last Halloween special. Either way, I can see Ava and Hugh Neutron being best friends.

      The biggest legacy this thing has is that it was the only CN show directly affected by the 2007 Writer's Strike. Most of Cartoon Network's writers are or at least were non-union. The strike was why they stopped giving a shit about cartoon\liveaction hybrids though not helped by the universal critical and ratings assfucking that this show recieved. Also, another fun fact, Dominic James (Jimmy) and Rhea Lando (the alien sister) had thier careers destroyed by this series and haven't been in anything since it ended.

    I think I can put Jimmy's Dad as a perfect example of (non-CG/animated) Uncanny Valley. He's essentially a five year old in the body of a grown man in the most literal sense and the way he's depicted is not charming like a manchild in most shows, just in a way that's deeply uncomfortable. I mean, his first scene was laughing at Morning cartoons in his PJ's while dribbling sugary cereal like a toddler. And then there's Enter's examples that shows he has no filter as he spouts whatever comes to mind and has no basic common sense like being incapable to tell the difference between his son and an obviously poorly made robot.

    • @NobodyC13

      @@hanezutchins2786 Again, non-CG/animated. Cartoony aesthetics can be done in live-action (Ned's Declassified, Scott Pilgrim, for example), but it takes very careful staging and direction to make it work and look appealing. Every thing Jimmy's Dad does is just creepy, and he has no redeeming qualities. You can't like a character like that. Mr. Turner does have manchild traits but the writers at least made the effort (in the first half of Fairly Odd Parents run) to give him positive traits to balance out the negative ones (like his negligence of leaving Timmy with Vicky): he gives his family homemade (crappy) gifts to show his love, he tries to bond with Timmy on activites like scouts and applied to several "cool" jobs to impress him; and when it's shown Timmy is in clear danger, he doesn't hesitate to go on the offensive.

    1.) A slice of life comedy where Jimmy is an ordinary kid who is trying to make it through school and turns to the characters he has made up for advice (usually in “conversations” he has with them in his room of something like that).
    2.) A WFRR style show where cartoons co exist with humans and Jimmy’s characters that he’s created are brought to life one day and stick by him in his daily life, helping him through problems (or getting him into them).

    Man this is my favorite animated atrocity review from Mr. Enter, it really gives me that Saberspark vibe.

    5:52 There's an actual reason for adding the TV footage in post-production. Filming a CRT display usually results in either flickering or a black bar rolling up or down the screen due to the screen's scan rate being out of sync with the camera's FPS.

    In my opinion, Out of Jimmy's Head can be seen as an early example of what the failing upwards concept looks like. The movie had an idiotic plot, characters that are mostly unlikable, and animated elements that don't interact well with the live action settings they are in, and yet for some reason the producers/directors of that trainwreck of a movie are given a green light to produce a series that is just as bad.

    This video started out amazing and either stayed consistent with that or kept getting better. Thanks to everyone who made it. I was having a rough day and couldn't stop frowning and had, just, such low energy... but then could not stop smiling with this video. It was funny and passionate and a lot of fun.
    I'm sorry that you were so angered with this cartoon, but art was then made out of what you had. I hope that this video was at least fun to make.

    Oh I remember the princess episode.
    She was brought to the real world and catch was that she was a nasty tyrant, like, she couldn't wait to eat some peasants for dinner.
    That happened.

    For those that don't know, the animated ketchup was due to a 3d gimmick going on at the time. CN real did stuff like that to go with a whole thing about 3d effects. It didn't last long. It is purposefully made to look like that. Yes. Originally it was a different affect, but that was to go with 3d glasses that you could rent from your cable provider. Yes.

    I actually remembered watching that princess episode when it first came out. The only thing I remembered was that when Sonny went to the princess world, he started grotesquely morphing his body (because the princess world was animated) and that when he refused to sing a song for the woodland animals, one of them bit him which caused Sonny to sing. Aside from that, I guess the only other thing that I remember was that Craig had to fight a dragon to impress a girl or something but that's pretty much it. Looking back, this show was really messed up. I seem to remember REALLY not liking the sexism episode because of how much of an asshole Dolly was to Jimmy. However, I feel that this show could easily be reimagined as a sort psychological horror with MC being trapped in a cold uncaring sitcom world with sadistic animated entities and being put in dangerous scenarios that often end with a laugh track. I feel like that would be a good subversion on the whole "mean-spirited" show cliché.

      That sounds like WandaVision, except while WandaVision was inspired by domestic life sitcoms and subverting them with horror, this idea is about subverting mean-spirited sitcoms.
