    A lot of commenters seem to think this is a full-on home remodeling show-it’s not. It’s about STAGING homes for as little money as possible to effect as quick a sale as possible. That’s why they use cheap makeovers techniques such as painting over wallpaper and cabinets, or replacing fake granite countertops with inexpensive butcher block.

    That agent needed ditching. No communication and no action. Just two tiny photos on the inside of the brochure? For a four bed house? And not a pic of the gorgeous garden? Bloody mental! That huge living room with the patio doors leading right out into the garden should have been a Major selling point. Living room was gorgeous after yet still kept the small office area and the fire place was So much better for being painted. I really hope she got a good offer and was able to move on with her life without that millstone hanging over her 😊

      I totally agree! That agent didn't get started working until the camera crew showed up and lit a fire under his arse! If he had even communicated that she needed to declutter and update the style then she could have handled that two years before, had the photos taken instead of it sitting on the market so long! I hold him entirely responsible for doing a shoddy job on that.

    Painting over wallpaper is a NO NO and watching Sophie use a 2" paintbrush on a full wall looks ridiculous, especially in a dress and heels? I'd also like to see more rooms like the kitchen and bath. Curb appeal is essential and nothing was done for that.

    The curb appeal needs work. Trim the bushes and replace the dead plant with a blooming flower. Sweep, clean windows, etc. I noticed on the "For Sale" sign there
    was no phone number for buyers to call. Is that something in England? In the U.S. there is always a phone number for the sales office.

      You'll see it on lots of "home renovation" programs, especially ones filmed during the real estate bubble crash beginning toward the end of 2007 and lasting through about 2014-2015, depending on where you lived. If the paper is firmly attached to the wall and doesn't have a raised pattern, it was the cheap recommendation then to paint over it with an oil-based paint (not a latex paint that is cleaned up with water) rather than paying somebody to remove the wallpaper or trying to take it down yourself.

    • @michaeltutty1540
      @michaeltutty1540 3 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      @@jannibal9273 That wallpaper in both living room and master bedroom could have been down in a day for both. Granted it was a smaller room, but working alone I stripped all the walls in a bedroom in about 2 hours. Most modern papers are solid vinyl now, and "dry strippable". Peel off the top layer, soak the paper underneath, keep it wet and with a wide putty knife, if almost falls off the wall.

      I see that the house has been sold twice again since 2009 and the decor has been done again. Also, the external doors and windows certainly have been changed at the front of the house. The driveway has been paved and it looks like a lot of the shrubbery in the front and back has been cut back. However, looking at the image of the kitchen, I suspect that's what the kitchen was in 2009 and it probably looked good enough back then for them to decide not to change it.

    I see this was circa 2008, financially spongey time. Houses weren’t selling and unscrupulous lenders gave mortgages to unqualified buyers who eventually drowned in the debt and walked away. I just sold my house in this incredible seller’s market (2022) in three days at 1-1/2% of what I paid for it 3 years ago. Friends came in and stripped it of any personal pictures, knick knacks, vases, etc. Nothing was on the kitchen counters except for two appliances. You want the buyer to picture themselves in the house, not admire your possessions. I donated, tossed or stored everything. It worked.

    I've watched so many of these Unsellable episodes and I'm always amazed..at how bad the makeovers are. Who the heck is on staff that makes these horrible decor decisions? Someone with no experience? Granted the house was a mess to begin with but..take for instance the hallway, that stark white isn't attractive at all, yuck. It's what I like to call 'glaring' white, no warmth at all to it.. and the master Bedroom color scheme, really? If I were that homeowner I'd be in tears. What a missed opportunity.

      When Sophie walked into a house with white walls, she would have criticized the sterile look and sparse furnishings, and painted it another color. The large hangings on the wall are a useless expense. The new buyer has to patch all the holes in the walls.

    • @hannahbanana007x
      @hannahbanana007x ปีที่แล้ว +8

      This is not an interior decor show where they show you modern, edgy, gorgeous designs. It's a show where they try to make houses appeal to as many people as possible. I agree with you that the make-overs are kind of boring, unpersonal and stiff, but the point is to make it easy for potential buyers to see how their furniture will look, or what it will look like after they paint the walls their favourite colour. It's easier to look past a boring white wall than striped wallpaper, paisley couches, tons of clutter, and sometimes even dirt, mold and damaging.

    The carpeting is dated and doesn’t add anything to the decor. If there were hardwood floors under there will be a great move to just take out all the carpeting.
    the so-called artwork that the so-called designer added in the living room was unappealing at best.
    Also what about the other rooms?

    • @thehungrygoldfish

      But even if there were hardwood floors under the carpet, they would still need to be refinished and refinishing the floors of the entire house is not feasiable within their time frame and budget. They also can't do every room in the house, which is why certain rooms are not shown because they're good enough to not be staged

    Comparing 2008 with 2018, you will find a big difference in how the houses are prepared for sale. There will be not any of the covering with slip covers; or not removing wallpaper and just painting over it; or covering the counters with sheets of vinyl.
    Things do change for the better, sometimes.

    Buyer beware!! If you like authentic than this is going to cost serious time and money to undo the damages from painting the beautiful wood and than paint over the wall paper (laziness) a little effort and as s contractor he could get a steamer. But to paint is just a false impression, hopefully they have a home inspection and it's revealed. A GOOD REAL ESTATE AGENT SELLS THE HOUSE AND NOT WHAT'S IN THE HOUSE. ATTENTION TO SQUARE FOOTAGE, CLEAN, BONES OF HOUSE, LOCATION, AMENITIES, NEIGHBORHOOD. THEY'RE NOT BUYING THE DECOR. Painting and maybe window treatments, no clutter ok.

When I bought my current home, it had been on the market for a year? no one wd buy it bc of the ugly floors and walls and deck. I had the floors replaced and painted the walls, cupboards n kitchen countertop myself. made a HUGE difference and was a fun large but very rewarding project.

    When selling your home, you have to remember you’re selling it. It’s not going to be yours anymore. It’s always about making. It look good enough for anyone to walk in and imagine their things in it. First sight people either fall in love with it or hate it, and all her color schemes and furniture and stuff made people walk in and hate it. Not only that they’re thinking oh my gosh what do we have to do to this house to get it to where we can even live in it question remember you’re selling the house you don’t want it anymore and you don’t need it anymore. Someone else wants it and needs it.

And I always miss a look at the bathrooms because these are the most expensive rooms to change….

  • @sandyca1106
    @sandyca1106 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yes, it's dated, it's a home. It's a home full of memories, but not of the interest buyer. They're not buying the seller, so the seller must remove their personal belongings, colors, etc and make it inviting to a buyer who has no imagination, you have to provide that for them. Always remember the home you are selling is not going to be yours anymore, so it's okay to completely change everything. Since you'll be moving, boxing up your belongings shouldn't be a problem.

    They renovated the living room and master bedroom only, and foyer. What about the kitchen, dining room, bathroom, and the other two bedrooms? Maria's decorating tastes would have flowed through the entire house. Also, the curb appeal needs new appeal, and the back garden looks very cluttered. Maria took all her clutter to her next home which would start to resemble the old house. 30% of the clutter should have been trashed.

  • @lorijones9579

    An estate agent can't do much when it has been declared unsellable and the owner moves so slowly. Maria to think long and hard about every idea offered, very unpromising. She perks up a bit at the end at least. It's huge. I'm not surprised the unsellables can't renovate/redecorate the entire house in three days.
