People forget how good Lynn Dickey was,I remember, Great Packers memories
That was the typical pie in the face, bag over head, and kick to the groin the 1980's Houston Oilers endured. It would have been nice to see the Oilers go to a Super Bowl. Bittersweet memories.
I’m a long time Vikings fan but enjoyed the Lynn Dickey era Packers. Dickey, Lofton, and Jefferson made a great trio of skill players.
Man... watch those short/intermediate passes by Lynn Dickey. The touch on those is remarkable. Talk about throwing a "catchable ball"
Had a chance to see Lynn Dickey play at Lambeau. He had as good an arm as Favre, Marino or Elway. Man what a rocket arm he had.
Lynn Dickey was an incredibly accurate QB. It’s a shame the injuries he suffered. Not to mention getting traded to the Packers when they were the joke of the NFL, deservedly so. With a couple better breaks in his career, he’d have been a HOFer and likely a SB winner.

If you want a real hidden gem from the Packers in 1983, show the Monday night football game against the Redskins. It was for a time and may still be, the highest scoring game in the history of Monday night football. If I recall correctly the final score was 49 to 48

I was born in Green Bay and raised in Houston. I vividly remember this game but never could find any clips from the contest. As I recall Lynn Dickey was sicker than a dog and yet had one of the best games of his career. Thank you for sharing!
I talked to Lynn Dickey about that. They made it sound like he had the flu, but in fact he had a massive headache from an injection he got in his back to deal with the pain.

Thanks so much for this throwback game, I loved watching Earl Campbell back when I was a kid. He was one of the toughest runners I've ever seen, and always took the extra hits for yardage hardly ran out of bounds. I miss the old Oilers uniforms and helmets as well.
Earl and the Houston Oilers Wish we still had them today. Now that was Football!
@@nickyviolaguitar Yes but sadly I saw a video of him some years ago and he was struggling to walk and his son had to help him. He gave everything out on that field and now his body is paying the price. He'll always be one of my favorite players of all time 🙏🏈

1983 Packers offense was one of the best in their history. I remember crying as a 12 year old when Eddie Lee Ivery went down in that first game at Soldier Field with that horrible knee injury his rookie year. I honestly believe he could have been one of the absolute best rb's in history if not for the multiple knee injuries. Great to see this footage from the past.
That injury could have caused the Packers resurgance in the early to mid 80s to stall.
The young guys (drunk) in front of us had a song/chant in the pre-season that they kept up all season when he was a rookie. "Eddie Lee Ivory, running in perfect harmony" (to the tune Ebony and Ivory). There was a second verse, but i can't remember it 40 years on.

Thanks so much for posting this. I had forgotten that both Archie Manning and Dave Casper had gone on to play for the Oilers and Jan Stenerud for the Packers. I guess Caspar went over with Kenny Stabler. Earl Campbell was awesome, as was James Lofton. It was also nice to see a happy Bart Starr when he was still relatively young and in good health. He was all class.
Lofton , Jefferson , Epps, Coffmann...were a real great set of receivers for us
How many playoff/Superbowl wins?
I coached Paul Coffman when he was in Jr Hi in Chase, Kansas. As a great coach, lol, he was my I-back not TE. Oh well, we won a lot of games with him.
Lofton and Jefferson were 2 of the most exciting receivers during that era. And Epps competed in the NFL's fastest man competition. He nearly beat D. Green 1 year.
@@natureboy1313 Coffman had more yards and TDs than any TE in Packer history in his 9-10 year career.
This is a game I actually haven't heard about or seen. So this is a TRUE hidden gem for sure. Thanks for posting this!

I'll never forget watching this. I was 14 and it was Vermeil's first game broadcasting (I believe). I was such a fan of Earl Campbell

BTW, I think this is Dick Vermeil's first game as a color commentator in broadcasting. Also the first game for Bruce Matthews' long 19 year HOF career where he missed like three games total.

Yeah, that's Frank Glieber alright. Always solid, a long with Don Criqui, Gary Bender, Dick Stockton, Charlie Jones, and many other non lead pbp guys!
Background on Dickey this game: he played the whole game with a massive headache. At the end of regulation, he left in an ambulance.
Later it was found out he was leaking spinal fluid throughout the game due a procedure on his back earlier in the week.
He did everything he could to keep his career going, when most mortals would have called it quits after the bad '77 leg injury. Surprised to see Whitehurst backing him up- thought he was off the team by this point.
"The granddaddy of all the domes, capacity crowd of 50,000".... My how the times have changed!!!! Bruce Matthews in his first career start blocking for Archie Manning, then close to the end of his career would be blocking for Peyton Manning in the pro bowl. Other than the lack of the "fox box, live clock score" I could watch these old games all day long
I like Houston Astrodome, that reminds me of Friday Night Lights 2004 between the Dallas Carter Cowboys & Mojo Permian Panthers. I know Houston Texans in the NRG Park, I'm saying that the Houston Texans want to be here in Houston Astrodome, they have never been there before.
The 1982 Packers were 2-0 when the NFL went on strike and took away what looked to be a very promising season. DE Mike Butler bolted for the USFL after the 1982 season and the 1983 Packers couldn't stop anybody.
Brings back so many memories of my younger years. This was a good Packers team.
Archie Manning, Dave Casper and Earl Campbell. Some big names. All were a little past their prime at this point though.

Most people forget about Oilers W.R. Tim Smith. This game was huge for him...

Another very memorable Packer game was the first ever Monday Night Football game played at Lambeau Field in 1979. The Packers were huge underdogs and they beat the New England Patriots. Bart Starr was the Packers' coach. The final score was Green Bay 27 New England 14. I was a freshman at the University of Illinois and back then hardly any college students had televisions, so if you wanted to watch something, you had to go to the dorm's TV lounge. The game was delayed about 30 minutes for a Jimmy Carter speech. When the speech was over, I found out that everyone else wanted to watch M*A*S*H, so I ended up going to another dorm to watch the game. It was just me and another Packer fan there. He left a couple times when he thought the Packers were going to blow it and then I let him know what he missed.
Jefferson was still solid here but his decline started towards the end of ‘83 and he was a shell of himself in ‘84. He had 0 touchdowns in ‘84. Crazy!
That's so Ironic. They mentioned in this game that the 1971 draft was the year of the Quarterback. This is in 1983. As time would go on. The 1983 draft will become the year of the Quarterbacks! Elway, Kelly, and of course Dan 'The Man' Marino! There were several other Quarterbacks drafted as well like Tony Eason and Ken O'Brien....
This was the start of a new era 1983-1999: The Class of 83 Era.

No, that was AstroTurf. That stuff was just like playing on concrete. A green thin nylon surface that is placed on top of asphalt with little padding on it. When it gets older, the padding will be gone and it'll be like asphalt.

The Oilers had four NFL Hall-of-Famers in this game. Earl Campbell (with his last 1,000 yard rushing season), Dave Casper (although he was traded to the Vikings later that season), Mike Munchak (starting his second year), and Bruce Matthews (his first career game in a 19 year career).

Would of been more of a Gem if Houstin Won coming from behind all game after tying it with less then a minute left then getting the winning score in Sudden Death. Great game though.
I belive the astrodome was the only artificial turf nfl stadium to have an infield during football games. Riverfront, the vet, and 3 rivers never had that

Buffalo gave them a great game, but Patriots prevailed 30 - 19

The Packers Jefferson was the original Herschel Walker trade in a way ecspecially for a reciever in those days also back when teams used to punish guys by sending them to green bay

It's really too bad that the Packers didn't have an elite defense with Lynn Dickey Jefferson Lofton Etc they could have won Super Bowls but their defense was weak
Dickey could have been a top notch quarterback. He never had the supporting offensive line or running backs. And the defense was below average. That 1971 class of quarterbacks was tough to beat.
I thought there was a year that the Packers recieving core from that era all went to the Pro Bowl (Lofton, Jefferson, Coffman) but not Dickey. To me, that was a head scratcher.

Looks like a good game. It's so weird how they never had the score showed throughout the game like how they do nowadays. "Lynn Dicky" looked pretty good for a Packer QB I never heard of.
They never did back then. It was Fox when they got the NFC package in 1994 that introduced the "FoxBox" and everybody said it wouldn't work, that it would be too distracting. Lynn Dickey was with Green Bay for 10 years

@@gunsharck Lynn Dickey, was an excellent passer, but lacked mobility. Then Randy Wright took over for a couple years 86-88. Then Don Majkowski took over the reigns for a few years. Majkowski got injured in 1992 and a guy named Brett Favre started an unprecedented streak.
LOL you would never see that move today where the receiver being tackled after the catch just lobbed it back to the other receiver. Amazing.

Yes, his only year in Houston, then his last year in Minnesota, after 13 seasons in New Orleans for the 'Aints back in the day when they were beyond bad! Archie was such a great QB, but on 3 terrible teams! You can see where Peyton & Eli got it from.

Packers had some real playmakers on offense that season - Dickey, Ivery, Lofton, JJ, Coffman, and even Phil Epps.

Packers had a very good offense then, w Dickey. Campbell’s last season w Houston. Football was great back then, so much more fun. Teams had personalities, old fashioned and fun. QBs were much tougher.
