the clarity problem has nothing to do with it being 1080p or 4k, he just needs a camera with a better sensor. more pixels =/= better quality image. it just means you can zoom in further. The size of the sensor of the camera (physical sensor size, nothing to do with pixel density) will allow more light to be captured and give a better quality picture. you'll notice how say a 10megapixel DSLR will take a much better picture than a 10megapixel phone camera but both will have the same pixel density.
This painting method together with more stippling motion is my favourite way of painting miniatures (and it's quite fast also). It is less stresfull on the paint consistency, less dependand on brush quality, gives more room for color experimenting and You can be a little bit messy with it and still achieve fantastic reaults. Very nice, quick and skick video!
Hi Vince ! I just understood a trend I was seeing in lots of minis painted by people I follow, thank you ! This is exactly what creates this "illustration hatch" look which is a cool alternative to those airbrushed gradients. Can't wait to try it out.
Vince, our preacher of sacred secrets. Blending without actually blending. Brilliant presentation, sir. This technique seems to be a fun and forgiving way of practicing brush control too.
Vince, Yet another excellent tutorial, showing in simple but comprehensive explanation while watching you perform the work and turn our another wonderful miniature. Thanks for the clear guidance!
nice work, sort of what i'm doing for Nighthaunts I often add a couple of lines from another direction, especially at a bend point, I think it gives it a good material look
The time has come where I have to wait a full week for another HC video (because I finished watching all the old ones)... Makes it even more enjoyable! I've had such good results with hashing and stippling that I'm trying this more often now.
Leave it to Vince to showcase his wizardry; turning a model I was not looking forward to into one I'm excited to paint with one small modification. Thank you Vince, please stay safe.
I guess this method would really improve any chitin carapace texture. I definitely saw this technique for painting carapace purpose earlier and it was great
Ooohh this title immediately intrigues me as a cheat I'll be interested in. Easy "blends" and also more texture? Seems like a two for one that is hard to ignore!
Another amazing one. I started painting some minis in oils because of you and I’m curious. They do save time on blends, i wonder what a 24 hour army done in oils would look like. Could be a really cool video
@@VinceVenturella hey question about oils when putting them in the dropper bottles. I typically have to adjust the mix alot to get it right. I know its cooking no baking but roughly what percent white spirits to paint do you use in your bottles to get that consistency?
It won't work as well honestly, that being said, if you make the lines thinner and use many more of them, you will give the impression of very fine cloth, so that can work. :)
Interesting development in the hobby. Just a few months ago blending was a must master theme. Now it can be avoided. Or is it only if texture is wanted that we can do without blending?
You can apply this to lots of things, and ultimately, you will be well served by learning how to blend, it's just a good skill to have. That being said, you can do a lot with this sort of technique on many surfaces.
Metal? Sure, you'll get a brushed type of model. Something smooth like enameled armor, it won't work as well directly with these lines, but you can do it with random directional scratches.
Skin, not really, because that really needs to look hyper smooth, cloth and armor, sure, though you need to vary the texture as opposed to the surface.
Good boy Vincey vee! I not likes blending I gots an airbrush I learning how use now, I hopes it help me makes smooth blends 🥰 it just a cheap one tho, I thinking I get iwata or badger one one day 🐶
I’ve noticed that people tend to hold pencils in a variety of ways. What he is doing here may be the way he holds a pencil? I think it’s most important to do what is comfortable for your hand.
I don't think you should hold it like me to be honest. I have sort of a 1/2 claw grip, I see some other youtubers have the same grip, in the end, it's fine, but you should do what's comfortable, I honestly wish I had a standard stright grip, but I just can't paint like that, I hold pens the same way.
yeah that's true, he is able to do crazy transitions with that though, keeps referring to his "many thin lines", tried it once but didn't have the patience so mine ended up more like "a few thin lines" 😂 thx for the vid!
Very effective. Brings out the folds etc. Actually this technique would be better used on a hand sculpted model to accentuate the goodness. Tbh atm it's highlighting lazy 3D sculpting on their behalf imo.
You read my mind and answered my question about only pushing up to highlights. I love the trick of doing less detail in the shadows to create another form of contrast. That sort of jedi mind trick is why you call what you do "cheating." :) I have really been enjoying ATARAXIA's channel, and she uses similar techniques to blend nmm. If you haven't seen her channel, I think she is bringing something really cool to the community. th-cam.com/video/W6AarNySOL4/w-d-xo.html here's her texture blend nmm video if you are interested.
Oh, for the love of little green apples! YT decided to erase my answer I made here. All I did was praise the painting (merited) and comment on how I'd acquired a new airbrush. This is silly, YT.
Yeah, youtube decides to just remove comments sometimes, it's quite annoying. In any event, glad the video was helpful and thank you for commenting. :)
I love Vince's words and advice he's so knowledgeable... but man, for god's sake get a proper camera, some decent lighting and show the finished product at the end of all of your videos!
Yeah, this was a proper camera and lighting and a serious case of my own bad work. I had changed my lighting set-up to get more light and forgot to change the camera settings, so I overexposed it. If you watch the more recent video, you will see I have sense callibrated. :) (Oh, also, the final product is at the end. :) )
I cant see at ALL what hes actually doing on the model. Making a video like this kinda useless, or at least much inferior to the dozens of other channels with very similar content and a much better filimng setup.
My apologies, this ended up a little over exposed. I had just changed my lighting set-up and didn't catch it during recording. :) Thanks for watching and I hope you'll give another or future video a chance. :)
yet another topic tackled really well!
Thanks brother. :)
Vince, its time dude... Get that 4k camera... You work is awesome, I just cant see it till the pics

Yeah, I totally agree. It's a great tutorial, but we really have no idea what the end result is. Are these figures somewhere on instagram perhaps?

Yes it does! It's perfect for those sorts of carapace.

Stippling works amazingly for this too on smooth surfaces where you don't expect lots of fraying.
Hope you enjoyed. :)

I can see this applied to Tyranid carapace. Thank you 🙏🏼
You bet :) - Hope you're well brother.
Awesome effect, thanks Vince!

How would you use these ideas for models that are meant to be clean, warm and opulent as opposed to grimy and worn?

I'm using this kind of approach more and more. My shaky hands are very compatible with this technique and I get less frustrated lol
Yep, nothing wrong with that at all.
Crud. At minute 7:40, what's OSL? Is it "One Source Lighting"? I have 2 minis I do like, but BIG, BORING Capes. This is helpful.

Awesome as always Vince, you absolute boss. Great video. Now to try this on the cloak of my Necromancer :)
Have fun!
Thanks as always! Looks fantastic for cloth and leather etc. Is it possible to use on "smooth" surfaces like power armour and metal?
Metal? Sure, you'll get a brushed type of model. Something smooth like enameled armor, it won't work as well directly with these lines, but you can do it with random directional scratches.
@@VinceVenturella Great! Thanks for the advice!
Would thus technique only work for a worn look? Could it also work on bare skin or newish cloth and armour? Thank you
Skin, not really, because that really needs to look hyper smooth, cloth and armor, sure, though you need to vary the texture as opposed to the surface.
Is it possible to use some sort of multi point flat brush in order to do texture faster?
In general, I would avoid it, you generally want the higher amount of control, it takes a little more time, but it's worth it.
Oh dammit, now I have to try and get my hands on a second Octren model to make a similar conversion. This one looks sooo good.
Yeah, I was very happy with this simple conversion. :)

Oh, that's good. I like that.
