      Great video. I do say that speakers sound different with different amplifiers. Cross overs do a lot of magic.

      Thank you for finally doing this! At least one of the audio reviewer’s aren’t so stuck up that they are willing to hear what others have to offer. It was just yesterday I was watching another TH-camr review the Definitive Technologies tower speaker and I’ve heard those in person. He gave those $5000 speakers rave review and even compared them to half a million Wilson’s, they were mediocre at best. this made me question everything he’s said in the past. This TH-camr, that will remain unnamed, threw a fit at this opportunity and stuck his nose up high.
      Hopefully you have at least five videos from this trip! I want some reviews of before and after his upgrades and I know I can’t be the only one.

      This was very interesting, i'm looking forward to the blind hi-fi cable test. Btw, given he's a sound engineer, he will probably recognise the sound of his cables given he would be most familiar with that sound profile but, it will still be fun to watch.

    I was really fortunate to cross paths with Danny in the very early 2000's (he was a friend of a friend). Listening to his giant line sources (Alpha's ) in his living room was the first OMG audio moment I'd ever had (still very much my bar).
    As a broke college student, I didn't have the cash to purchase or the means to assemble a kit, but he still treated me like I did.
    Few days later he emails me offering me a demo pair of AV-1's (a now discontinued bookshelf) for an outright steal.
    I've gone through a lot of other speakers since then, but will never let go of those.

    I sent Danny one of my hand built cabinets that I bought a few years back. I installed SB Acoustics drivers, and some off the shelf crossovers. Lets just say the sound wasn't up to par. Danny and Hobbs designed new crossovers for them. My wife and I picked up the cabinet and the new crossover components on our way back from our Colorado trip (then on to home in Hamilton, ON). Hobbs and Danny were very inviting, and gave us a tour of their facility. They were great! Nicest people you ever want to meet! As for my new crossover networks, they went together well and they sound incredible! Great video, Jay!

    Great series. Two audio enthusiasts who make their living in different slices of the audio enthusiast market.
    Danny has been a source of information as long as I can remember exposing the speaker industry by removing the veil and demonstrating opportunities for improvement. His knowledge of open baffle speakers and how to make high performance audio without the $$ is legendary.
    Jay, OTOH shares his observations on commercial products and does so honestly. It will be really interesting to see what he has to say about Danny's flagship products in a listening test. Where do they stack up vs high end commercial brands that Jay is so well versed on.
    Also interesting to see a little glimpse of Danny, the man. I think an interest in DIY cars makes sense.

    Hey there. I thought I recognized you Jay. I looked back on your vids and sure enough it was your evaluation of the Willsenton R8 that got me to buy one and I love it! It fit my budget for something I've wanted for a long time. A tube amp that didn't cost a fortune for a regular guy that loves quality. I'm glad you connected with Danny, I follow him a lot. I love tips and tricks for better sound. What he has to say makes sense to me as I have been a armature "junior lol" speaker builder since the 70s. My biggest learning point from Danny is in the cross over components. ( do you agree? ). I will be looking forward to what you think of his set up and impression of his various speakers.
    As I can afford it I am going to build my own version of Danny's' LS 6 speakers. That's a long term project.

    Danny Richie is a legend in his own mind. He's an accomplished self-taught speaker designer (and amateur athlete, it seems) -- but when he holds forth on power cables, "tube connectors," and the supposed evils of sand cast resistors and (shudder) ferromagnetic binding post nuts, he's so far out of his depth that his spiel doesn't even meet the modest criteria for simple sentience.

    saying flat response = boring is just silly. Seems to me that idea got started because speaker makers who forced a flat response at any cost, using digital crossovers, notch filters, EQ, endless filter components, achieve that response curve but pummel the signal to hell in the process. The best speakers match compatible drivers and use a minimum of quality transparent (Don't screw up phase) components to cross the driver responses over at their inherently desirable frequencies.

    • @editorjuno
      @editorjuno ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Agreed -- he's competent, but unexceptional. This is frequently the case with designers that have no formal engineering background and who've never apprenticed with a master. When you check out the CVs of guys like Andrew Jones the difference is obvious. Danny does OK for being entirely self-taught, but he's not anywhere near the top tier in his field, and a lot of the products he promotes -- e.g. "tube connectors" and highfalutin Chinese AC cords -- are pure snake oil.

    @swinde ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I tend to support Danny's approach to speaker design. The speaker needs to be as flat in frequency response as possible, just like all of the other components in a high fidelity system. In this manner the music will sound in the truest fidelity possible within ANY room it is projected in. If the room has problems, you should deal with it in speaker placement, equalizers and tone controls. The speaker needs to be neutral. Most people will not have the luxury of building a room designed for audio.
    Many speaker manufacturers artificially increase bass and treble volume and actually suppress midrange because some of the public interprets this as "better" sound.
    Danny's crossover designs help correct this problem.

    Didn't all this start with him critiquing the listening rooms of the reviewers not being capable of an honest evaluations? His set up looks fairly cobbled together and not particularly professional. We will just ignore the fact that in the review community his biggest supporter, that he has often collaborated with, is new record day which listens in an untreated family room that is open to the rest of the house.

      Couple things. The room w X-Otica’s is definitely treated & designed for both acoustics & Clean Power Delivery. You’re seeing curtains behind the speakers , btw , so you have no idea what’s going on w that space. As for NRD, the man is currently working on a 2nd structure he had built for listening & live performances. Hard for me to criticize his effort. He has a 2nd YT called the Sound Shed. Little content to date.

    • @adisonklein3385
      @adisonklein3385 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@markconner5569 I can see that he is testing speakers in his shop, even if it is nearfield, that is not treated. He also harps on standard connectors but is testing the crossovers with alligator clips. My issue is not with his setup or his testing. It is the hypocrisy of him making a video insulting reviewers for theirs if his is not exceptional. Also I think that most peoples knowledge of him came from NRD reviews of his products and collaborations with him. He did not tell NRD that his positive reviews were useless because of his setup at the time. I have considered purchasing one of his upgrade kits as well as speakers and will continue to consider them. I only think that it is fair that if he can critique reviewers, then I can critique him.

    I have to say that I have some doubts regarding his approach of flatening the frequency response in order to be "true to the input". That might make some sense if you're designing your own speaker, but when tweaking someone else's design, shouldn't the goal be to try to stay true to the voicing of that speaker?

    It's worth noting, it's not just smoothening the F.R., he encounters, details, and repairs gross negligence crossover design!
    To be fair, it's a real mixed bag out there ... many mainstream offerings are simply commodity type items, junk x-overs, advertised and sold as performance pieces.
    With many enthusiasts shipping him their loudspeakers for assessment, Danny's gaining exposure to a big piece of what's out there ... and we're all better for it.
    Good stuff Jay ... staying tuned

    Nice...Glad to see we can accept that while we have differences we can consider others opinions and their efforts The Ability to Agree to Disagree and remain considerate is commendable. And to say something is impossible is to be narrow minded.

    Great content Jay. Really envious you got to go to GR. But can't wait for your other upcoming visits to share with us. One thing though I still can't get over seeing Ron in Dannies truck. I think EV when I think of Ron. :) :) :)

    I can't remember the last time I commented on a youtube video, but this was so much fun I had to chime in. Great job Jay and I echo the sentiment someone stated below...the video seemed far too short! Which is rare to experience anymore. Keep them coming please and thanks!

    Is there no building code in Texas? You can have an upper area with no railing to prevent falls? You can also have a hazard at the top of stairs were you can potentially hit your head? That's a long tumble to the bottom.

    When you first started talking about going down to GR to meet up with Danny, I was thinking to myself that Danny is going to get you out on the track. I laughed then to see you going with him on the track in this teaser video!

    Can't wait to see the cable test. I have made cables from Danny's kits and they have changed my audio life. So, I'm a big fan.
