    Thanks Simon. There's just something about your videos that pull you in, keep you at ease and at the same time inform and entertain. I love the b roll you include in each one that give us a window into who you are. It makes you seem more real and relatable. I also enjoy your candor. Thanks for what you do. You are very good at it. By the way, why are you "Brits" so good at this ? P.S. You've (and admittedly Darko) already talked/guided me into a Qutest ....................... now for a streamer to go with it ???

      Thanks Ken. That’s heart warming and so kind. It encourages me to get all these comments even if Chord will probably not like any criticism on build quality. I’m reviewing fairly and when I watch all these shop reviews with everything a1 but with loads of consumer doubter comments it makes me wonder why these brands risk this. People aren’t stupid and we are not in 1985 hard HiFi sales anymore . Tbh I always slightly wince at watching myself, maybe something of not liking how I come out in photos, but I’m always trying to make the discussion natural and engaging, no stuttering (which is hard), and not be OTT with enthusiasm. I think if I can show it in a subtle way, reflected in the video quality, that is more powerful!

    Thanks for your review. I own the Mojo vs1. Connected to my Bowers and Wilkins P9 signature they sound magical. After 5 years on I am looking forward to purchasing the new Mojo 2 to not only improve the sound of my P9 signatures, but my Hifiman Sundara. I feel the present Mojo vs1 is just able to cope with the Sundara. I use a software crossfeed on my android phone(usb audio player pro) which really improves the music on my P9 signatures, but not on the Sundara. A hardware setting of crossfeed will be better than the software one.

    Simon, another great video. I’m watching this about 3 days after getting my Mojo 2. I believe Your review is insightful and your observations are correct. First let me agree with your comments about the manual - it’s very much inadequate. I would go further to say that for the money it should come with proper cables or at the very least with simple, bold, and clear statements about what you must purchase to get it to work with one’s phone. It is ridiculous to have to struggle over such basic information and having to shop for a separate cable.
    Second I would like to agree with you on its sound over good headphones. It’s pretty good. I’d take it further though. You didn’t mention (just said probably) about iems. I have some very good in ear monitors. The mojo2 is ok with them but simply doesn’t add much. For sure it doesn’t add $700 worth of benefits for an iPhone and Mac user with IEMs. This has been a major disappointment for me with it. I don’t always want to carry around my full size overears headphone gear. iPhones may be hopelessly bad for sq. I’ve never been able to fix the sound that comes from (Several) of mine. Not even with the Mojo2. I’ll keep trying though. (Btw, poly is hopelessly complicated and buggy so that won’t fix it either).
    What you say about using the Mojo2 on a two Chanel system is helpful and consistent with my findings. A lot of distortion and hunting for acceptable gain level combinations between the Mojo2 and the pre amp. Btw, Mojo2 as a pre amp did not sound good for me at all through my amp and speakers. Much better with the pre- amp.
    I never had the mojo (1) but had heard from people it was good as a pre-amp. I don’t agree that this works with the mojo2. On a resolving power amp/speakers system the good effects of the DAC (tone, soundstage, etc) are covered with a blanket of distortion.

    • @13thnotehifireviews7
      @13thnotehifireviews7  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the feedback Western , I’m convinced with some IEMs I tried notably Shure iem headphones I borrowed for a while but didn’t get the chance to review them. Also my mas audio science X5i’s. For small or inexpensive IEMs I’d recommend cheaper headphone DACs but the mojo is so damn good, it really comes into its own when I try the Arya’s. It goes to show a dac / headphone amp is always transformative when the headphones are similarly good and dac alone, as with most audiophile hifi, can never be taken to transform the headphone sound. When you spend on one you spend on the other….I’ve got a poly to play with and so far it’s ok for me. Some issues with connecting to network because app wasn’t on the same network as poly but other than that the SQ is very good. I never tried it as a pre but I fed it into the inputs of my integrated as I showed and it’s great. I agree with you on manuals. The poly manual isn’t great and leads you searching online for lots of information. I have fed back information to chord about manuals. Hopefully they look at it.

    Such a truthful video. Thank you. Seriously nothing should have a micro usb port in 2022 especially if its a portable use device. They did it for that poly thing. But just like how they added 1 type c they could have added 1 more. They designed a whole new top panel with 4 balls but didn't even paid enough attention to use. No display as well too difficult to use those great eq options without screen.

    • @13thnotehifireviews7
      @13thnotehifireviews7  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you too. Agree re poly, maybe they could have added more but I suppose people only use one at a time on portable devices. I don’t think you really need a display in all fairness, as it’s so easy once you know what
      all the buttons do. You just get used to ignoring the colours and keep pressing up and down to change the different options in dsp I’m finding. You don’t need to be really precise and chord have maybe confused people with charts and maybe I did with the fruit machine graphic, but whatever it is easy to use. 😀👍

    First I really enjoy your video's.I agree with most every thing you say except for the build quality grade. Yes the sticker I know is a cost cutter but does not affect the function or durability of the unit.Take a picture and store the info on your phone. And the button rattle really if that's all you can find wrong with this solid built little jewel Chord has done their job. Sorry just feel you went to heavy on these points. Carry on🙂

      @13thnotehifireviews7  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the feedback. I did think about the buttons rattle and it might not be that big for some. In fact I was using my qutest a few few days ago, which uses same spheres, and the button got stuck down such I couldn’t actually press click it. Rattle is a sign of build quality and attention to detail and some people will be annoyed by that at the £500 price point, so I think I was right to mention it on balance.

    I think I've finally got the final touches on understanding this DAC. Of course that's
    because of this review (after a wack of others). I am torn between this DAC and the
    Bifrost 2 but because I find them both (kind of) affordable ... I can almost see myself
    having both and then selling one? It's not that I can afford this but I just can't afford
    to miss out on the sound of music well presented to my ears in my room ... as I like it.
    Now, the Qutest could be the sonic panacea. The challenge is that with the ever
    decreasing brick and mortar stores whereupon a time we could actually go and hear
    these sonic creations ... well, we have to rely on good sonic journalism like yours
    in order to formulate "sound" decisions relevant to purchasing. It's all kind of like trying
    to explain what an orange tastes like to someone who's never tasted one. I ALWAYS
    appreciate your reviews but I prefer them after the others if they exist. Like pudding
    after meat-loaf? I'll stop🇨🇦 ... I hear trucks (not really)

    • @13thnotehifireviews7
      @13thnotehifireviews7  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks very much Charles. It’s never my aim to persuade people to buy based on my review if I rate a product. I always say a review is for a shortlist and a basis for then trying and affirming or rejecting my views, and I am more easy if people try first. On a product at this price there should never be any excuse of dealers to let people try before they buy and offer sale and return. Is this not possible in Canada?
      Also if you can’t afford it don’t stretch yourself. I can’t afford loads of the stuff I review but satisfy myself with the fact that enjoying music can be done very cheaply with a streaming sub.

    Thanks for the review. I bought a second hand Mojo last year and although it was a step up from the M-DAC I can't recommend it as a desktop DAC as it randomly turns off, sometimes doesn't turn back on and have to retry a few times, get some random fart noises coming through (pretty sure its not me) I've read long threads about people wrestling with the drivers. DACs shouldn't need a driver, beyond the standard one that comes with Windows. When I hear that it has an FPGA I keep thinking about the MiSTer project for retro gaming and maybe its time for an open source FPGA DAC that would cost about £100 for the hardware and then a donation for the software, feed that into an amp of choice.

    • @13thnotehifireviews7
      @13thnotehifireviews7  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks too. Sorry to hear of your troubles. Maybe they take a look at it? For your information, I know the generic windows drivers still allow you to play straight away. That’s what happened in my review. But the chord driver you download helps with 768khz functionality and is the one for proper functioning. I know what you mean but I think it’s probably more windows than brands as most devices you have to download drivers, and windows will obviously have more sway than HiFi firms I bet…unfortunately.

I thought they were both a little 'thin' or 'light' sounding and could have been more robust and dynamic. I much prefer my 6 year old PS Audio NuWave DSD DAC and as well as the RME ADI-2 DAC FS, both of which have been in my system for quite a while now. As an aside, I am not a headphone listener. @@13thnotehifireviews7 so I got the mojo 2 now and I actually love this interface. Once you learn it which really is not to hard, it becomes really easy to use. It is also unique and stylish, kind of retro vibe almost. I actually like it so much that my gf will make a drawing of Mojo 2 and it will end up printed on a tshirt :)
      My only concern is that when I connect speakers Klipsch R410-PM using RCA cable then I get this electric vibrations feeling under my fingers when I touch the mojo's chasis in output area. Like there is a current in a chasis itself due to poor grounding. Same does not happen if I connect my headphones or IEMs.
      I am thinking of replacing RCA cable for a better quality cable. Although I am worried that the problem might be coming from the speakers themselves

    And now there is a Mojo 2...
    It just makes me wonder. I have a dCS Verona (clock) / Delius combo (DAC) from 2006 here to try and possibly buy (2000 euros), but seeing this, I wonder how long it will take for more affordable DACs to catch up... I know the Ares II was a lot better, now the same seems to be true of the Mojo 2, and this is still relatively affordable gear (the dCS was NOT).

    Hello Simon, I love your review and want to use this dac in desktop mode. As there is no fixed line output, you said that you have to put the volume level of the mojo as high as possible without hearing distortion when you connect the mojo to the amplifier and speakers. Did I understand that correctly?

      Thanks! For others who want to know: I asked Chord yesterday about this and they said that for a line output of 3 volt you need to press the volume plus + button EXACTLY 41 times, the result is two blue volume buttons. They also provided me with an example pdf with photo’s and instruction. I will try this as the mojo 1 has a fixed line input of 3 V and that does work very well on my rotel pre and power amp. For the mojo 2 it should be ok for me. This info would also be very helpful in their manual…

      Thanks too. They aren’t that confusing tbh, but I think if they summarised in a summary card or section in the manual, with finger presses and illustrating one button is more coloured on plus and less on minus when pressing dsp, it would be a whole lot easier. With some graphics you can explain that in a few pictures, or I could. That’s why I went to trouble of doing graphics. Often audiophile manuals are too literal, but they need to appeal to everyone, so you have one section with the graphic, then notes underneath expanding. So you understand what the product does quickly from the graphics, then once you understand how to operate it, you come back to understanding the tech and reading it fully. You don’t want to spend forever reading reams of text to know how something works first, nowadays. That’s how Sony have done it for years and the best manuals.

      @@jd2plus2 thanks for your input. At the moment I'm firmly in the Gustard camp based on my own reading and trusted reviewers of which Simon is one (of three!). My experience, to date, is that choosing a DAC appropriate to ones system is a bit of a minefield, the Gustard X16 delivers huge 'bang for your buck' or in this case my buck! I have looked closely at the Zen but discounted it, perhaps a closer look at Topping is needed.
      So why haven't I gone ahead with the Gustard? A couple of reasons;
      #1 I am a little nervous of buying from China not least the additional taxes for doing so. Buying from a distributor or dealer here in Ireland (or EU) to avoid taxes would be preferred but limits the DAC choice at my pricepoint.
      #2 I love the small form factor of the Mojo 2, I do have rack space constraints, although these are not insurmountable. The Gustard although itself small, will be a squeeze whereas the Chord will fit.

    Simon, superb review. Thank you very much. But as an owner of an M-Scaler I am confused by your initial comments regarding the benefits of using the M-Scaler with the Mojo2. The use of a dual data SPDIF connection to the coax input on the Mojo2 is a significant change (improvement?) compared to the Mojo(1). So is using the M-Scaler with a proper cable to use the new dual data coax input on the Mojo2 worthwhile? If so, is it a big enough improvement, in your opinion, to sell one’s Mojo(1) and get a Mojo2? Thanks very much and regards from Chicago!

      Thanks very much RJ. It’s unlikely to be worthwhile tbh, and while I haven’t tried….in my opinion a bit like sticking a $4000 dollar exhaust on a $500 car, if that could be possible and IF you see what I mean. About getting benefit out. My experience of using m scaler with both Qutest and Hugo TT2 is that it does bring additive benefits but those benefits are never anyway near as much as going next one up…so m scaler with tt2 isn’t better than chord dave, nor is Qutest with m scaler better than hugo tt2 alone. I think making mojo 2 compatible with m scaler probably suits a commercial need to sell the m scaler more as I say, I’d question that and Rob Watt’s comments are revealing.

I think you’ll find benefit from mojo 2 over mojo one in the DSP and some are saying this new mojo is a little bit more incisive than the first one which they say is more relaxed. I’m not sure I got that as research for this review, because you’d simply tweak the tone controls…..that’s why I say the benefit in buying is in the DSP.

      The gavins gadgets video was quite good comparing it to the ifi that got an EISA award, where he preferred the chord for easy to drive headphones and where you might not be using powerful balanced connections, which lets be honest is most of us and most headphones and why this dac stacks up. Plus watts FPGA and use in hifi too. Also poly steaming use on top in an all in one brick. I don’t think it can be faulted on all this score therefore.

    Wait, it's meant to rattle like a box of tik taks?

    • @13thnotehifireviews7
      @13thnotehifireviews7  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You wouldn’t expect it to Will at £450 I thought….but not like tik taks tbh. So far no other review has said this which I think is fair criticism for a great sounder, and it seems I’m the first review to mention it. I did check with numerous buyers and shops to make sure not just the unit I have and it isn’t. I’m now watching other reviews to see if they mention it and who they are ???? 🤔

    If you never own 500$+ headphones, go upgrade your set first. This mojo 2 does not improve your cheap headphones much.

      @13thnotehifireviews7  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am not using cheap headphones , as shown 🎵 ….also the mojo2 is more than good enough to hear differences with cheaper headphones around £200 or $300 because let’s remember diminishing returns happen. If you use ultra budget headphones I think you are right - it doesn’t make sense there.

    I’m a little concerned with the opening of your video. The connections with depression are very concerning to me. There are a LOT of resources available to those that may need help.
    Honestly I’m a bit confused as the rest of the video does not give that impression at all.

      I know this is a comment on a old post but still concerned

      That’s the thing with depression , people see people ok when often they are not. But thanks for your concern, but don’t be concerned as many people suffer including me. The idea is to show what music does in that intro. Cheers.

    B+ build quality?? Wtf are you comparing it to ?. English design and build, made from CNC Aluminiuim... funny..... I utterly love my mojo 2, fabulous bit of kit. Reviewers really are full of it!!

      The buttons rattle, so it doesn’t get full marks hence b + . Sorry if it offends you and you bought one, I bought one and like it too but can see the faults with it. I have to if I want to review without bias

      @@13thnotehifireviews7 Fair point. A bit harsh tho. Like you say, it's difficult to do an honest review without seeing the tiniest of niggles.

    In regards to your comments about the control balls "rattling". Have you not heard of: :)

    Great review BTW, I just got my Mojo 2 after selling off my original Mojo first edition some years ago.

    The hugo1 was major fail with any connected adapter. Do they fix it in mojo2? Thank you.
