    It's insane how good these two were at their roles, if I wasn't as familiar as I am with the Columbine shooting I'd have easily believed this was real footage. Bit of a shame none of them pursued acting further.

    • @voteZDLR
      @voteZDLR 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +211

      As far as I know they're not "actors" in that sense, the director found people who "felt" real. A good chunk of the movie is actually improvised, they just had a loose script. It's similar to the kids who were in another found footage movie called The Blair Witch Project. Although technically in that case they WERE trained actors they just didn't do anything else beyond that.

    • @alejorag

      @@voteZDLR Ohhh, that'd make a ton of sense, kind of what I've heard referred to as "natural actors". My favorite colombian filmmaker Víctor Gaviria actually uses these a ton, he even made a documentary called "How to get birds to act" about one of his movies where the whole cast were a bunch of kids/criminals from the streets basically playing themselves. Come to think about it, I really love this technique.

    Oh wow, i remember watching this when it first came out and i actually thought it was real footage of school shooters. I have brought it up in conversation many times over the last 20 years, telling people it was the most messed up thing i have ever watched. Only by watching this i now realise that it was a movie and they were actors.
    I remember just being absolutely stunned at the end, even though i knew it was going to happen you just thought it wouldn't, because they seemed like decent young guys who just hated school. You are never really convinced that they were actually going to go through with it, which made it all the more shocking.

    such an unforgettable masterpiece - a film that could have easily come off as exploitive, opportunistic and “too soon” feels authentic and grounded in it’s depiction of high school alienation. one of the scariest movies i’ve seen to this day.. and mainly due to the performances of Andre and Calvin, who are so scarily convincing for two kids with essentially no acting experience whatsoever. it really drives home the fact that no one really knows what bubbling beneath the surface of angsty, misunderstood teens - it makes you connect with them, hoping that their plan is a sick fantasy and they won’t go through with it.. which makes the last ten minutes so much more horrifyingly grim. the repressed anger and undertones of a homoerotic relationship between Andre and Calvin is subtle and provocative - definitely the most fascinating and disturbing film made about school shootings in america to this day imo, great vid

      The "horrors of reality" in that sense make terrible horror films. Especially considering people who like stuff like horror films have usually been there done that in terms of experience. So to them thats just real life, a part thats dark and most people have never seen, but not very scary, not much scarier than say driving day to day knowing youre far more likely to be mangled up or killed than you are in a school shooting. If driving's not scary why would the even less likely day to day shit lotto be scary?
      Now having your mind taken over by demon before being dragged to hell, thats scary. Because we dont realistically know if its possible or what it would be like. The root of horror is the unknown, so whats lacking here is the unknown.

    • @amodernalchemist432
      @amodernalchemist432 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @@Tinylittledansonman excellent point! The unknown plays a large part in fear too, you're right, but most of the unknowns are based on unrealistic *mythologies or fables.* These stories are used to induce fear as a form of control. Like the Abrahamic religions, as prime examples, who tell their followers "If they commit sins, they will spend eternity in hell!" Now, what greater form of controlling the masses has worked more effectively and efficiently than those religious laws? They are thousands of years old and people in the 21st century still follow them...fear is the most effective tool for control! Look what Hitler was able to do just by using fear to it's full potential, he turned his entire country into jewish hating/fearing folk, seemingly overnight.

    The first few minutes had me thinking of Columbine. It's crazy how that one event changed a bunch of stuff. It was probably the first big school incident. Those of us who were in school from the 90s to the early 2000s most certainly felt the ripples from that event. So much has come out about it too. Hopefully the future generations don't see it memory holed and forgotten.

    4:56 I think a big part of acting is that it's a human thing that people do for fun and for the love of it - even in a dark movie, you can have a fun family moment for the actors and the people watching can feel it. I think that's what's missing at times with the emphasis on SFX and such vs a movie with a tiny budget like this that just focuses on the acting itself and the story building and the love of acting - there's a reason to watch and love one more than the other or equally in different contexts. You can just feel a specialness from a scene like this - it's just acting and recording at its roots, a family improvising a scene together, you can almost hear the tongue in cheekiness when he says "today, you 18th birthday" like this sort of inside joke.

    I find Columbine fascinating in a dark way. What I think happened is that they were bullied. When the teachers and staff didn't do anything, they snapped. There's been a lot of people saying that wasn't the case, but I refuse to believe that. Why would they do what they did without something that lit that fuse? If it was their families, they'd take it out on their families. Something was happening at school and they couldn't take it anymore. To be clear, I AM NOT defending their actions. Also, I can't stand when people find scapegoats to blame for people's actions. Music, video games, tv, etc. It has nothing to do with that. People have been violent for millennia before any of those things.

      I think that that was part of their motive, but it’s also clear that they were not completely victims. Having read both of their journals, Eric was extremely disturbed from the start and Dylan resented anyone who got more attention than him.

    I’ve seen every available basement tape, and even was fortunate enough to play the CHS DOOM 2 WAD (Mod), and Dylan seemed to be the most disconnected, and was either playing the clown or in a screaming rage, Eric at 1 point even nearly started crying at the fact he won’t be able to see his friend in Michigan ever again, and when discussing the aftermath Eric was most concerned at how his parents would feel, before Dylan turned the camera and make a stupid joke, hell Eric’s first cigarette was in a basement tape and he didn’t even know how to use a lighter, and what I’m getting at is where there’s a Sociopath (medically called Antisocial Personality Disorder) there’s usually a Psychopath, and yes there’s a difference, Sociopaths CAN feel emotional, although slightly harder than most, it can also be switched off in a rage, meanwhile Psychopaths CANT feel any emotion AT ALL, and have to mimic using surrounding people’s body language and expressions as a base just to fit in, and is the worst out of the 2 disorders, I think Eric was the Sociopath and Dylan was the Psychopath, why is this relevant? Because when a Psychopath and Sociopath are together, the Psychopath is the dominant, and Sociopath is the submissive going along with whatever the Psycho does/says, aka, Psychos are the leader in all scenarios, hell when Eric bent down to k*ll either Cassie or Rachel (I forget which) the shotty kicked so bad it broke Eric’s nose, and he got so overwhelmed at seeing his own blood the lady next to who got hit was able to make her escape, a psycho wouldn’t care and would likely enjoy the sight.

    The idea that Eric was the mastermind/leader is a common misconception. They were both equally engaged in the plan. It could even be argued Dylan was even more invested than Eric, to be honest. Btw, some of the details in Elephant were thought to be true at the time, such as the shooters having been romantically involved and that Eric shot Dylan and then himself. That said, I agree that Zero Day is a much better movie, but beware - it's not just based on Columbine. It's a beat by beat recreation of it. It takes very few creative liberties, sometimes down to dialogue.

      I saw it way back around graduation. I didn't tell anyone to watch it cause I didn't wanna seem like I idolized stuff like that. Same with that rampage movie it's like they wanted to spoon feed us that at that time because it had slowed down and they needed to push an agenda. That's why they did that sandy hook thing. Cause no one was shooting up schools anymore. That guy's dad was supposed to testify in supreme Court against a massive business he followed a paper trail and found billions of stolen money and had proof - that day. So they killed his wife shot up the school and made his kid a monster by blaming it on the whole family. Making anything he might have said in court incredible and he was no longer on the witness list.
