These so - called emergency radios are nothing but silly toys. With the
ridiculous cranks, solar cells, sirens and lights all of which are
almost useless . With all the junk they put in them theres no room for a
good size set of batteries like D-cells which gives you hundreds of
hours of operation instead of multiple ineffective options. The cranks
break off and dont give you any real recharge time (your going to crank
while driving or boarding up your house??) The solar cells wont run the
radio and take hours to recharge tiny batteries. The multiple power
options (a selling gimac) are what make these radios almost worthless.
If they didnt do that you could fit 3 D-cells which will power a radio
with no digital displays for 250 hours. You also dont want digital
displays or flashlights draining your small batteries even when the
radio is off. You want a slide rule dial AM,FM, WB , 3 D cells, slide
rule dial, big speaker , detachable ac cord and long telescoping antenna
(the fad junkers have short ones) The Kaito KA-390 , Retekess TR-640
and Prunus J-05 are far better for emergency use than these junky fad
so-called emergency radios. There just a bunch of useless features to
make you think "YOUR PREPARED" It like a swiss army knife with a bunch
    of useless blades.

I have the Kaito voyager pro. It's over 10 years old now and has all the things I need. All the usb ports flashlight alarm cell phone reading light, don't forget to pull it it out and check it or you might find battery corrosion. It happens, put it away and forget about it, happened to me. Ni hi batteries are gonna be hard to replace, if you need a new radio GET ONE NOW. Great video, yeah, thats how I found out my batteries corroded because of this video, Thank you, I could have lost my radio!

You must get the C Crane Radio 3. It’s a great radio and it specializes in the 2 Meter Band….the Civil Defense Band. It’s much more valuable and easier to access than the Short Wave Band. The low cost radios like Kaito don’t cover the 2 Meter Band. In fact, most high end recieivers (e.g., Eton Elite) don’t cover the 2 meter band--despite the fact that the 2 meter band has repeaters all across America. My CC Radio 3 in Virginia can receive traffic as far away as San Diego because of this repeater system. Finally many of these repeaters have emergency back-up power to stay operational during an extended blackout.

All the features of this KA Voyager is present in the palm-size Retekess HR-11. Bluetooth, recorder, digital tuning, mp3 player (which is really really good btw because of the equalizers), everything. It is small but the sound is superb. No problem packing it in my bag. The only downside, because it is an early tech, is that it only uses the nokia bl 5c battery. I wish the manufacturers will redesign it to accomodate an 18650 battery but all the features are still there.

    Where did you get from

  • @billharris6886
    @billharris6886 2 ปีที่แล้ว +21

I have been purchasing emergency radios for the past 30 years, that particular one you are showing, has some nice features. I like the multiple charging methods, the cellphone style power plugs, and 18650 Lithium battery. The Bluetooth, SD card, and stereo is unnecessary but, may come in handy occasionally. The solar cell on the radio will only charge up to around 100 mA, so take several days in full sun to completely recharge the battery, assuming you don't turn the radio on. All of the hand cranks I have seen on these emergency radios only put out up 50 - 200 mA so, not really that practical but, if the battery is completely dead, will give you enough charge for a few minutes of radio playing.
The bands the radio should have as a bare minimum: AM, FM, and Weather. The better radios will have the addition of Shortwave. The best radios will also have Shortwave with a detector for SSB (Single Side Band) and CW (Morse Code), which are the modes Radio Amateurs (Hams) use. The emergency radio I use is the Tecsun PL-880, which has all the aforementioned bands and SSB detector.
Shortwave is not nearly as popular as it once was, the popularity of the Internet has killed off a lot of the Shortwave broadcast stations. However, Amateur Radio is still quite popular and would be your best bet for obtaining information, although, due to the radio wave propagation on these bands, local stations will not come in well unless they are a few miles away.
If the power goes out for long periods of time, the phone and Internet has the potential to go down as well, meaning, local radio stations that have backup power, may lose their means of gathering information. Due to these limitations in obtaining vital information, I recommend everyone checking into Amateur Radio, which regularly practices emergency Communications through two sub organizations called ARES (Amateur Radio Emergency Services) and RACES (Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Service). The downside is, a license is required to transmit but, the entry license is fairly easy to obtain and the local Ham clubs encourage those wanting to join, as well as provide the necessary license testing.
Other less effective options (no license required) to communicate are CB (Citizen's Band) and FRS (Family Radio Service) transceivers, which are very low cost and easy to use. These would be best for local (within a mile or two) information.

Yes, maybe it is time for an upgrade? 😎 I have two (2) emergency (receiver) radios and a variety of two-way (Ham and GMRS) radios for our very rural neighborhood. I have a *Tucson Digital PL-330 ($85.98) and a smaller *Radiodity Raddy SW2 ($20), both have their Pros & Cons. The PL-330 does not receive aircraft bands, no crank generator, no solar panel, and the controls are more complicated than they need to be? Both are USB rechargeable, the batteries are replaceable, and the Raddy SW2 does have a small solar panel and hand-crank. I can also recharge them via my solar system, Lithium battery banks, and/or my twin-generator dual-fuel generator system connected to the house via a 50 Amp switchgear circuit, or the more portable 4-panel solar (cell-phone size) battery banks.

I have a Kaito also it's the Voyager Pro. I think it was the top dog a couple years ago. Same features as yours' but different housing. your model is all sleeked up. I really like mine and it lives plugged in and used often .I also have a Grundig that I know is over 20 years old and still works and holds a decent charge. They are a great thing to have.
