That track list is so depressing. Portland, I-70, Flemington, Louisville, Mesa Marin all gone and no iRacing at the time to scan them to preserve them digitally. Although I think they're trying to turn I-70 into a dirt track last time I looked into it.
They just got everything done with that track and had a test and tune. The first event will happen on the April 30th-May 1st weekend with World of Outlaws Sprint Cars.
I remember having this game growing up. It was awesome. I grew up on the original game, and I remember playing the crap out of the NR2 demo. But my uncle won some contest with Sierra, and he won a bunch of games, and he basically sent me what he didn't want and NR 1999 with the Busch and Truck Series was one of them! I spent so many hours racing around on custom tracks, making crappily done MS Paint level paint jobs. Fun times. Thanks for bringing back some good memories.
Flemington was my "home track." Modifieds were crazy fast around there. One of the first "soft wall" technologies in the country, too, with large foam blocks placed in the turn walls to absorb impacts. After a wreck they would just sweep up the chunks and drop a new block. It is now, like nearly all former tracks, a Walmart and Lowes. 😥
the DIRT on Asphalt mods looked so bad ass. Ray Evernham, Doug Hoffman and so many more just killer drivers going around that place in those cars was so damn unique and cool.
Yes, this was sold both standalone and as part of a special release NR 1999 Cup, Busch, Truck combo set. This might've been the first game or sim to actually have multiple NASCAR series in one package... Also Heartland Park Topeka is still open today, it's a combo NHRA drag strip and road course that is still used by SCCA... The NASCAR Winter Heat Series from 1994 saw that series grow QUICKLY. The first race there were I believe 7 trucks. By the 3rd race they had around 20 and the racing was EXCELLENT. Walker Evans, Baja 1000 winner was one of those early non NASCAR drivers who gave it a shot. Along with PJ Jones, Dominic Dobson, Jeff Ward and a ton more...
I got the version that was the original, BGN, and Truck series all on one client. Picked it up at Babbages for 43 bucks. It was called the Ultimate Edition or Gold Edition or something like that. Also the manufacturer licensing could, at the time, be downloaded using the Sierra updater. Apparently there was a brief lapse in the licensing rights. Also NASCAR 1's physics actually did get updated and improved with an official patch that was downloadable on AOL Downloads, or you could mail in for the update on 3 floppy disks.
I was actually at the Heartland Park Topeka race that year! Loved it when the trucks came to this track. I think me, my dad and grandpa went to every race they did there.
17:25 "Truck game, Truck sim" , you've clearly triggered the community a few times and learned not to 😂 Great video, always nice to see a game I hadn't heard of before
Fun fact, the SCCA held their National Championship runoffs there 2006-2008 seasons. The SCCA thought a central US location would garnish a larger turnout for the big, end of year event... they were wrong. Also, while good on paper, the shared dragstrip has never been fruitful as the track treatment and rubber used by the drag racers leads to a very, very slick surface in the rain. As with other tracks (Sonoma raceway comes to mind), a parallel road course surface was eventually installed.
Memphis Motorsports Park/International Raceway has had some rough times since 50,000 people showed up at a Busch race to boo Jeff Green (and cheer Dale Jr.). I'm glad for track conversions so I can still tool around there in AMS.
A fun tip when shifting gears on a road course... always get the motor up to around 9k RPM (or beyond) red lighting it when shifting especially when you're in lower gears. You want to get the max torque out of the engine when accelerating like on restarts. Careful not to over-rev the motor to 10k or you will blow the motor up.
I actually remember having this when I was a kid & I loved it.. I wasn’t able to get any of the other Nascar Racing games until much later but I still have very fond memories of this game
I have this in my collection too. Picked it up in a junk shop would you believe in UK. Couldn't believe me picking that up. Will have to put it back in my computer sometime and also try put some extra tracks in to see if it works. Nice review 😃
Always had a soft spot for truck racing. I missed this one (and 99) when it came out but was wondering of they included Walt Disney World Speedway as the Trucks did race there twice around this time I believe.
old dirt track was cool... I first heard of Flemington as a kid the year it got paved and they started running the DIRT on Asphalt modifieds weekly. Ray Evernham was winning a LOT at that point... long before becoming Jeff Gordon's crew chief...
13:48 you can edit the mirror in the text file to chose between a segmented mirror, or a single-panel mirror with a really wide FOV to do away with blindspots.
Hey there GP could you please do a video on how you got NCTR to work on windows 10. I constantly get an error message when I try to run 3D FX EXE, I did run the patch that I found on the Sierra help page. But Alas The game still did not work. Thanks for your attention to this text.
Never heard of this game till now , it was kinda cool to see mesa marin in the game cause its a hometown track. It was sadly drestroyed a good while back.
Funny story given this channels content, but back in the day I once stood in a store with two games in my hand trying to choose which to buy...this game and gpl. Already had the original NASCAR Racing, so I chose to spend the extra money and go with gpl. Glad I made the choice I did, though I will say it's fun to see what this game is actually like all these years later
I was in the same boat, except I bought them both. Instantly grabbed GPL and decided to get the truck sim too. I was disappointed when I installed it and found out there were only 8 tracks. Still lots of laps at Flemington and Evergreen though.
I live in the Flemington area and I will say they wrecked the track when they paved it. The Trucks were way to fast and dangerous at Flemington Speedway. It is now a Lowes and Walmart Shopping center.
gotta admit though, those DIRT on Asphalt mods that ran there weekly after the paving job were fast and cool as hell to look at. who knew at that point Ray Evernham would go on to be Gordon's crew chief and bring dodge back to nascar. Crazy world...
One of my favourite Papy titles. Loved the obscure short tracks like Mesa Marin. Oddly 1999 was the last year of mostly short track racing in the CTS. Then they went to Daytona and started doing superspeedways and the series became pretty boring.
Most of the short tracks in this game no longer exist, at least in their 1998 form. - Portland, Flemington, Louisville, and Mesa Marin would all be sold for redevelopment within a few years of this game’s release. - I-70 Speedway closed around the time of the 2008 financial crisis, but is currently in the process of reopening as a dirt track. - The oval at Memphis still exists, but hasn’t been used for major-series racing since 2009. - Evergreen is the only one of the bunch that has remained an active racing venue throughout the last two decades.
I thought you could combine this WITH Nascar Racing 3 to have the whole package? This looks exactly like NR3 after you install the CTS expansion, are they really two different things? Just the NR1999 trucks pulled into NR3 with some updated graphics. I think D3D was the best graphics, at the time, which was new to NR3; It did away with those darker rectangles on the ground and turned it into a full distinct groove of rubber. It also did away with the puff-cloud smoke physics, and turned into a very smooth smoke white effect.
The one thing that annoys me about this game is that the computer opponents are difficult at passing slower lap traffic. Like I'll be racing the opponents and here comes a slow lapper truck with heavy damage holding everyone up and they can't get by that slower lap truck unless it's clearly out of the way.
NR99 also had the truck halftime rules, but it was dropped by the N3 expansion pack IIRC. But they did introduce green-white-checkered finishes in the CTS for the first time.
wanted to know some more about the topeka track so i put it in the youtube search bar, first video that comes up: "Topeka: The worst town in the US" lmao
I feel bad because I know the circumstances but I still laughed when you skipped Crawford lmao
Same 😂

@@TomBoi So glad to hear that. I used to love seeing I-70 every year when ASA would race there on TNN...
I still have this game on a CD. Sitting right next to me right now.
How about now?
You still have it?

The version with all three classes was the bomb - I knew none about NASCAR as I do now but causing massive pileups with the damage model was fun.
for its day that damage model was AWESOME.
I was actually at the Heartland Park Topeka race that year! Loved it when the trucks came to this track. I think me, my dad and grandpa went to every race they did there.
Same. My Dad and I would always go to the Homestead truck races and 98' was my first race. I remember Rick Crawford won that race.
Oh yeah the Nr1999 tyre screech. Haven't heard that for a long time.
Unfortunately I have. Sounds exactly like my ex-wife.
17:25 "Truck game, Truck sim" , you've clearly triggered the community a few times and learned not to 😂
Great video, always nice to see a game I hadn't heard of before
this came before nascar racing 3 which had it's own truck series expansion pack
I remembered the truck expansion pack. This game seems like the expansion pack, but as a standalone game.
Nascar 99 racing at Flemington was my favorite thing ever! Thanks for the nostalgia!
MINE TOO!!!

Certainly has an interesting set of tracks. Stuff you don't see in many games and sims.
Unfortunately, many no longer exist: Flemington, Portland, Mesa Marin, Louisville...
Memphis Motorsports Park/International Raceway has had some rough times since 50,000 people showed up at a Busch race to boo Jeff Green (and cheer Dale Jr.). I'm glad for track conversions so I can still tool around there in AMS.
There was a seprate game too? Huh... I only remember it as "Nascar Racing 1999 Edition". And hell yeah Topeka... I loved running that track in NR1999.
Flemington was an iconic dirt track for big block modifieds, and sprint cars. Sadly, it was just as dangerous of a track as it was iconic.
A fun tip when shifting gears on a road course... always get the motor up to around 9k RPM (or beyond) red lighting it when shifting especially when you're in lower gears. Interesting point about the relative screen that I completely forgot about. Iracing's relative screen has the lap count on it.
I have this in my collection too. Picked it up in a junk shop would you believe in UK. Couldn't believe me picking that up.
Will have to put it back in my computer sometime and also try put some extra tracks in to see if it works.

19:20 Pretty good performance given that you are racing against Lemans Prototypes.
hahahaha they do look like old GTP cars with the low res shift the bodies go through at a distance lol
Being a stand alone game it would have been cool if they had included maybe 1996 and 97 rosters or something like that
That setup menu is so slick
Dirt Works Designs has Flemington in a track pack for rFactor and it is so much fun to drive.

it definetly has some nascar2 (car setup sheet)...but has lots of stuff from nascar 1999 (like the cockpit)
It amazes me Papyrus managed to make the rear view mirror even more confusing than their earlier games.
Also have never heard of Heartland!
Hold On, This is Literally Nascar Racing '99 Season But It Focus on the Trucks instead of the Grand National and Cup .
Yeah he says this is part of a bigger Nascar game but the version he is playing is a standalone version.
Congratz! You'l be able to print that Newspaper article out and stick it on your wall !
my cousin drove the 52 at one point Scott Hansen was his name
The Oakwood Homes truck in 99?

how do you play this game in windows 10? with dgvodoo2 it only works in window mode and the red meters of the car doesn't show

its interesting that the trucks in all video game apperances never had official manufacturer support UNTIL Heat 2.
yeah especially since a big point of the series was to promote the truck brands!
This is awesome!
Hi GP ... Is the Truck Series Mod released for Nascar 2003 better than this 99 offering ?
