I'm a retired fashion illustrator, a graduate of THE prestigious school in NYC-and no one taught me color theory like you do. I'm finally understanding it, tbqh.
I do it the same way. Only difference I do it on the computer screen with paint. com. Principles of this example are like contraries meet on the middle but not willy magenta and green are contraries it turned black. Red are my. Green are sy. See 2y 1m 1s. In the mix yellow is dominant. It turned black plus yellow. smyk smy = k rgb = my ys sm = 2s 2m 2y == k k
I loved this Color Theory series... I freaking loved it. I am so glad that somebody actually made a course in Color Theory that doesn't involve art history. I've struggled with this field of art for so long, because every time I tried to take a paid course they tried to teach me about Picasso or something. Kudos to you for actually breaking the mold and making a straight-out technique only course.
You're welcome! I'm going to be moving this series into how to apply color theory to fashion design, and I reference other work here and there, but it's still going to be more about practical application and how-to-do than studying other people's stuff.
I have a fashionista 10yo granddaughter who seems to have an innate sense of quirky color sense. You’ve inspired me to gift her with a color wheel and paint set. Never know when we are feeding a beautiful novice.
This video has been popping up in my feed this week, so I just wanted to say again how good this video is. Of all the many Color Theory videos I've watched, this is hands down THE BEST!
I just finished watching your color theory series. I've learned more from you than other videos I've encountered on the subject. Thank you! I'm now a subscriber.
"Did I say shits and tints?" 😂😂😂😂 So funny and such a great teacher! I hope you never take these tutorials down. I watch them again and again. Great practice!
Love how you crack yourself up. Thanks for all the info. If been an artist all my life and self taught and one thing I want to learn more is color theory since I never learned it in a school setting.
Just finished your 4 color theorie videos. Very helpful. I'm a miniature painter, but the theory to apply to your art is all the same. I totally love that you're diving deep into the theory. Thanks a lot!
@13:59 ... highly impressive tracking shot. haha i declare.. these are the "all the things I never learned" from the generous University of Zoe. Gaining a deeper appreciation, respect and understanding of color theory. I can see color (great eye for it naturally) but theory matters. Thanks, as always.
I learned to draw years ago and am now embarking on using paint. I knew that learning color theory was necessary. I rarely subscribe to a channel but I subscribed to yours! I am excited about what I am learning from your videos. hope to see more videos on color. I will be sure to watch them.
i never plan on going into anything art/visual related but i absolutely love watching your videos and learning about the more technical aspects of fashion and design in general. it really helps to appreciate things we tend to take for granted/ not notice, like the different types of brown and their undertones and why we gravitate to one color and not the other when there isn't a glaringly obvious difference. Plus its just nice to see someone older on TH-cam who can teach in a way that is easy to understand and has a fun personality.
Thank you for all the compliments! I love people who think like you, because I think the first step in true sustainability in any industry is for consumers to truly appreciate things, which I believe results in toning down our need for constant new cheap stuff, thus leading us create more quality things, paying people a reasonable amount for said things, and not overproducing crap that ends up in landfills. Whoa, I just went on a rant there. Oops, sorry. :D
lol its ok. its a justified rant. I look at the things my grandmother has and how well they held up after all these years and i'm jealous. I hate how often I have to replace things I've bought. And its not that I don't take care of them, they are just not made to last more then a few years.
Oh, I have a lot of opinions about this. What it boils down to is the shrinking middle class. Poor people hoard jealously, they seek out retail therapy in droves, and seek out cheap things they can afford. There are a lot of studies done on how income levels affect spending habits. And companies see these trends and cater to them. Back when we had a healthier economy and thriving middle class, we paid more money for fewer things, for example bridge brands in fashion thrived (bridge prices are in between designer and fast fashion, basically). So as much as I hate bringing politics into my 'classroom', vote with your dollars and vote for the people who are interested in building up the middle class.
I love your color theory videos 😘😘 As a web developer/occasional web designer, I feel like this will help me tremendously. Cant wait for your next color theory video.
I love this you really are a great teacher✨ I wish you did hair so you could teach on how to get certain colors while taking in consideration when lifting hair and the undertones that the hair has without getting muddy colors. I think the hardest for me is getting cool colors since hair has warm tones and mostly cool mutes but even so everything you teach helps a million times and everything you have said I should be able to figure out on how to achieve that, thank you! Highly appreciate you💖
These color theory videos have been so helpful. In the first of the series you talked about color stories. Now that you've shown us all these awesome techniques, I'd live for you to do a video revisiting that idea with some examples.
@29:00 I never would have looked at that celery color and known that it came from a "light tint" of the "mute" of such a bright orange and (is that indigo?) blue. Just wow. I'm really starting to understand undertones better by watching you. It's such a good suggestion to record ourselves mixing colors to document our learning. Thanks for that. I'm commenting too much, but I don't even care. I really can't say it enough. You're an excellent teacher.
You couldn't be more right about leather colors! The names always represented some sort of drink/liquid or food. Sometimes I thought whomever named some of the leather colors at the tannery had a bit too much drink/liquid! As for color theory this is my favorite exercise. I like to use a 9 x 9 grid and in the middle going horizontal I'd use compliment colors (one on each side and the middle very center square the most neutral that you can tell which color it favors more). Then the vertical squares going up would be tone and going down from the center squares would be shade. I'm going to give your method a whirl because even though I don't necessarily need to do this exercise because I need to buy because I love to paint and mess around with color theory. Even though I'm confident with my color theory knowledge I always learn something knew or am reminded how beautiful a certain colors colors are mixed then spend a few hours hyper focused of different color palettes that sing. I love color theory so I hope to see you keep the series's going either generically or how it applies to fashion.
Brush death at 5:54 was tragic. I have a brush that does the same thing, and the bristles are so floppy that they don't spring back after being pressed out of shape. Eugh. Anywhoo, TFS. I love these videos so much!
Aw hell no, I glued that sucker right back on the handle. The bristles are still good. That brush can rest in peace when the bristles all fall out. Have you tried a good brush cleaner? Sometimes they can breathe a little life into an old brush. I like The Masters Brush Cleaner and Preserver in the little beige tub.
Long live the brush. My brush is one that came in a starter pack of Royal&Langnickel watercolors, which I wanted to try. If floppy discs were made out of these bristles, there would actually be a reason to call them floppy. I actually just recently purchased the cleaner and preserver.
I wish I had you as a teacher when I was taking color theory in art school back in the 80's. Of course, you probably weren't born yet. This makes so much more sense than how I learned it and it would have saved me a lot of years of frustration.
oh it's black I love it already - me everytime I go shopping, most relatable thing I've ever heard ahahhaha :D thank you for this fun color theory lesson Zoe!! :)
these colour theory videos have been extremely valuable to me!!! ps. im painting my boring black leather jacket lilac. tired of the safe "investment" leather colours
You could also mix black using all the primary colors, or using compliments. They will take time and practice to achieve a toned black without making the colors duller.
OK. Wish I was more specific with a previous comment-- Would love to see a video of yours that (with total disregard of fabric selection/choice) applies color theory to the *finalization* of patterns. If nothing else, maybe a few safety guides or do-not's when it comes to marrying warmer & cooler tones/tints/mutes of colors within a single piece.🙈🙉🙊 You mentioned that someone asked you to summarize into one sentence what color theory is...if asked the same question I would say that color theory is important because it sets the mood (genre) for story telling. Undoubtedly, good design/styling will make a statement but with color it always leaves a mark.
Hi Zoe, just want to let you know that I really appreciate all the work that you do. I've been watching your channel for a while and normally shy away from commenting. BTW I think you would be a fantastic high school teacher! I have a question, I noticed that you have a fantastic marker collection. How do you use them to render you fashion illustrations?
Thank you! My big concern is my pottymouth and my anecdotal tangents. The occasional slip in college is ok, but I think they're more strict in high school. Well, the class my boss was talking about was a college summer program for high schoolers but anyway, I have tons of marker videos, go check my Illustration Specific Fabrics playlist.
That's the point of color mixing exercises. You see with your own eyes what it looks like when you mix mutes of different ratios and exactly how different they look from tones, etc.
A huge portion of shopping decision making is about color. When was the last time you bought yourself clothes where you didn't like the color? Learning the basics of colors, how to create the colors you want, how to describe them, how to create color schemes are the building blocks to building beautiful color stories for your collections.
How do you keep your gouache from drying up too quick on your palette , I could just be missing something but it looks like the paint continues to stay fairly wet
Several layers of tracing paper. I never draw on wood or metal or anything that hard. It's easier for drawing and protects your furniture surfaces. Every surface I use for drawing or painting always has a few layers of paper, or a layer of thin illustration board.
Thank you for answering my question, the layers of tracing paper look useful and comfortable....I'm definitely going to try this....... you're the best!
I am like 5 years late but I just found Zoe and this color theory series is the key to the universe. Using this as a teaching tool in my office of architects and designers. Thank you!!! Your specificity has finally made things click for me, and seeing T,T&S of mutes 🤌🏾🤯
I'm a retired fashion illustrator, a graduate of THE prestigious school in NYC-and no one taught me color theory like you do. I'm finally understanding it, tbqh.
Awesome! Better late than never, I suppose.

You teach so amazingly well. I never understood everything about color till you did these color theory videos. Please keep teaching more!
These neutrals are so beautiful! Appreciating these colours are so important, thank you for such a nice explanation :)
I just finished watching your color theory series. I've learned more from you than other videos I've encountered on the subject. Thank you! I'm now a subscriber.
"Did I say shits and tints?" 😂😂😂😂
So funny and such a great teacher! I hope you never take these tutorials down. I watch them again and again. Great practice!
TFS so much good information! I could listen to you all day on any subject but I especially love color theory. Please continue 😊 thanks!
You're welcome!
Love how you crack yourself up. Thanks for all the info. If been an artist all my life and self taught and one thing I want to learn more is color theory since I never learned it in a school setting.
This vid had me mesmerized!!! I was so into it, that it was over before I knew it! So informative! I L😍VE IT 🎨 Thank you, Zoe!!!!
This was great! I learned more from this series than I ever did in art classes. Yes I would like more color classes..color is everything to me.
These color theory series is really helping me so far
definitely going to try the exercises :)
Thank you for making these videos!

Wow, woman - you really know your stuff and explain it well! Please continue the color theory videos - they're awesome!

You're right, most companies make things assuming they'll be replaced soon, not repaired.
Zoe Hong is there any way to change that other then being better consumers?
Oh, I have a lot of opinions about this. What it boils down to is the shrinking middle class. Just came across your channel, thank you for how you get this across. Looking forward to delving into the rest of your videos
Hello Zeo, I really really love your videos, they are so fun and easy to watch, and super helpful. BIG BIG THANKS.
These videos have really helped with my illustrations please keep doing these awesome videos, Feeling really inspired!!
I love your color theory videos 😘😘 As a web developer/occasional web designer, I feel like this will help me tremendously. Cant wait for your next color theory video.
Yes, these first 4 color theory videos can apply to any discipline. Happy to help!
I love this you really are a great teacher✨

Yes, I will address that moving forward.

I love your color theory videos. Just discovered you!

oh it's black I love it already - me everytime I go shopping, most relatable thing I've ever heard ahahhaha :D thank you for this fun color theory lesson Zoe!! :)
My name is Prakriti Nath...I feel glad to talk with you....I am waiting for your next video...☺☺
Thank you so much for those videos! They are incredible 🙏🏽💜🙏🏽💜🙏🏽
This was great. Please keep going!!!
Love your videos 💕
I’m learning a lot
Keep it up 👍🏽
This is some invaluable information right here 🙏🏼💕
these colour theory videos have been extremely valuable to me!!! ps. im painting my boring black leather jacket lilac. tired of the safe "investment" leather colours

ooohhh....did you know that my daughter is your big fan...I love you....😍😍
Aw thanks! *waves hi to your daughter
Wonderful video, thank you!!
🤗🌺🤗
I am in no way involved with art other than audience, and your videos are captivating
Thank you very much, your videos are so helpful!
Cant wait!

you are my idol😍 You helped me so much!! Thanks!❤
You're welcome!
this. is a great video thank you it's helped me alot
you're welcome!
Amazing info 👍🏻😀
😂😂 I really enjoyed this video with all the explanation of coffee whisky n all thanks 🙏🏻
thank you for the info
You're welcome!
Hmm, do mutes work differently with a cmyk colour wheel? They would all be closer in value right.
Could you do a review of all the gouaches you've tested out and why to like or dislike each? That would be really helpful.
I'm definitely down to do that. It's in the queue somewhere.
Hi Zoe, just want to let you know that I really appreciate all the work that you do. I've been watching your channel for a while and normally shy away from commenting. I also have a video, one of my oldest, called "Basic Fashion Illustration Tutorial" or something like that.
Zoe Hong cool I'm going to check it out!
How come we're doing the RYB and not the CMY(K) Wheel?
I have a question. Can pastels be considered tints and tones of light colours?
pastels are tints
Hi, how do you differentiate mute color and chromatic gray color?
That's the point of color mixing exercises. You see with your own eyes what it looks like when you mix mutes of different ratios and exactly how different they look from tones, etc.
Hi zoe
Is it that important for the designer to know this part of colors and how to mix them and practicing them all the time on the papers?!!
A huge portion of shopping decision making is about color. When was the last time you bought yourself clothes where you didn't like the color? Learning the basics of colors, how to create the colors you want, how to describe them, how to create color schemes are the building blocks to building beautiful color stories for your collections.
Zoe where do we utilise mutes in fashion design?
Everywhere
How do you keep your gouache from drying up too quick on your palette , I could just be missing something but it looks like the paint continues to stay fairly wet
Porcelain palettes tend to let paint stay wet longer. I also tend to mix up more paint than I need.
I like your videos
:D
Hey! Did you end up making the color theory for fashion video?
Not yet, soon.
what are you using to cover your work area with ??
Several layers of tracing paper. I never draw on wood or metal or anything that hard. It's easier for drawing and protects your furniture surfaces. Every surface I use for drawing or painting always has a few layers of paper, or a layer of thin illustration board.
Thank you for answering my question, the layers of tracing paper look useful and comfortable....I'm definitely going to try this....... you're the best!
what is Undertone
Chroma never got a mention.
hai...
I don’t understand undertone still.
I am like 5 years late but I just found Zoe and this color theory series is the key to the universe. Using this as a teaching tool in my office of architects and designers. Thank you!!! Your specificity has finally made things click for me, and seeing T,T&S of mutes 🤌🏾🤯
