Pope's offense has gotta be better than the dribble drive where 3-4 guys stand and watch one guy try to drive through 3-4 defenders.

I’m as interested in Coach Pope’s defensive scheme. His first several players to land with him at Kentucky are defensive specialists and defense was a major concern for Cal’s Cats this last year. He and his staff immediately identified defensive issues and addressed them. I do believe that his system, when implemented to its maximum efficiency on both ends of the court will be spectacular.

With the resources they’ll have for Pope, KY will do great things. People are criticizing Pope but seem quick to forget BYU beat Kansas, Texas and Baylor last season.

And they did it with maybe only 1 of the 5 best players on the floor any point in the game. It was mostly mediocre players being used to maximize their strengths and minimize their weaknesses. That's exciting to see.

Was great listening to and seeing Shawn breakdown a few of the offensive sets. I would love to hear his breakdowns on Pope's defensive teachings and how having more defensive oriented players will make it better. The offense can be talked about all summer long, but the defense will be our question mark at the moment. You guys do great work!

Cannot wait! This is going to be fun! But pretty sure PCoach Pope is going to tweek his system so not sure it'll be the same thing he had at BYU. Pope's tenor seems that he will evolve this.

    • @wtk6069
      @wtk6069 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Generally speaking, any healthy system evolves a bit year to year to fit personnel. Even Cal did that much. This is very natural, but the core principles aren't going to change.

I watched some tape on BYU running "zoom," and I wonder how much Pope is influenced by Larry Bird. The pin-down screens on the three-point line look like Bird setting up his guy for a curl or corner three, especially.
Could Jack Pilgrim ask Mark Pope about how much his philosophy came from Bird, and are we going to see him at Rupp?
Is Pope the only former Bird player to coach, or who else is coaching that played for Larry Legend?

BYU guy here. And a big Pope fan (which he didn't have enough of in the BYU fanbase -- which had more to do w silly local & instate politics than anything; Mark Pope was the best thing to happen to BYU bball -- quite possibly ever)
As for the observation that Pope will run the offense through the 5 -- THAT is based probably entirely on last season's BYU footage. That was largely about Aly Khalifa. But Aly was WAY too much of a defensive liability for Pope to even think about taking to Lexington w him. (And KY at BYU didn't put up any fight in retaining him when Louisville put up a reported 600 th-ou for him (which frankly is WAY too much. Dude has NBA-level court vision & perimeter ball handling for a 6'11 guy -- but his proportional reach is quite possibly the worst in D1 for 6'10+ guys (his arms are puny), & his athleticism & mobility will still be terrible even if his knee surgery & scheduled 1-year hiatus works out fabulous for him. (And best of luck to him! Dude is a phenomenal bball mind & a real warrior. One of the biggest crowd favorites at BYU in a long time.))
As for this year, though, Pope's gonna run his motion offense largely through his PGs. And whoever else might step up in practice & prove themselves worthy of that role.
I can tell you now that Pope largely recruited guys he trusts & knows. If you didn't notice, most of his pickups were kids he's faced over the last few years at BYU. (And Kriisa he even twice-recruited while at BYU. He might be marginal NBA talent at best, but take it to the bank you're gonna love him running Pope's offense. And you'll love Butler as a glue PG, too.) And of the other transfer signees -- you can be sure they were initially looked at based on advanced stats more than any other criteria. You can also be sure Pope will build more on leave-early kids down the road, but he'll NEVER do that to the degree Calipari does, nor to the degree that UK is used to. And I'm not at all surprised he didn't bring in any such guys on this transfer-dominant roster he was forced to turn to in the wake of the mass roster exodus he was facing. Those type of kids are of course leadership & flow killers. If you're gonna accommodate them, you gotta build around them, & Pope wasn't in a position to do that with his last-minute scramble at roster-building.
Best of luck to you guys. I'm a big Pope fan, so I certainly wish you guys the best. Be very gracious to him in this first season, of course. I like your roster's ability to compete with just about anyone, but will Pope have the time to get the chemistry outa this thrown-together group -- that'll he'll need to be a Top 10 team & a real contender?
    I'm not so sure.

Watching this offense, everyone says what if u aren't making 3s. They're really not hunting 3s. All of these plays have the ball moving to the front of the rim and kicked out to a wide open 3. So, what they want is a layup first or a lob. U won't see many lobs on this BYU team because of the size difference. The difference is the 3s they will shoot are wide open shots and not a guy taking his man 1v1 and pulling up from 3

What killed BYU last year, in games where they bricked all kinds of threes. They got behind early and couldn’t make it up. Coby brea was hyped he isn’t good enough to be at UK. We got a couple guys who lucked into a spot. That being said we got a few monsters as well. Given the situation you gotta give Pope an A. The only thing that keeping the plus away is not getting anyone to come back. However I think a few guys are gonna regret leaving.

Not to mention he wasn’t the best player on his team last year . In final shots to be taken he was the 2 or 3rd option!. He can shoot but he’s gonna prove he can guard pass and run enough to play. Every team in the sec pushes the pace. I could be wrong and I hope I am but anymore time than 2 minutes at a time and you might as well have him stand at the offensive end of the floor . We ll see?

I would expect a lot of loses. Not just based on terrible offense, but a lot for sure. You need to be able to score 80 plus if you need it. Foul trouble can’t bother you. Have to make open 3s, in transition fore sure. The talent isn’t there.
